The first episode of The Walking Dead may still be the show’s finest hour

I thought it was somewhat overrated, but still a pretty solid pilot ep anyway; it had a slow, tense pacing, good atmosphere, and memorable, nightmareish imagery and a sense of humanity. That being said, it is far, far away from being TWD's only worthwhile episode, as some claim, the problem is that the show just couldn't keep its quality consistent, and overall, just never found any sort of creative direction to be heading in for its endgame.

B&W episode? *Googles* I never got that far into the show, since I stopped following it sometime during or just after the 4th season. Judging from the recent complaints and declining ratings I keep hearing, I made the right choice...

Outside of the Night Of The Living Dead homage-factor, I doubt B&W would improve the pilot any. It's like them making a B&W version of Fury Road... just, why?

I think it's also to give viewers a chance to make it look like the comic since it's B&W.

Post Re: The Television Thread

Caught up with the first two seasons of Fargo recently, mostly because it was on Hulu and some people on here spoke well of it.

First season is not good. It's not bad, either; it has moments. But it is poorly written and indulgent in all the wrong ways. Too broad in its comedy, trying too hard to cleave to the tone of the film and failing.

Season 2, on the other hand, is incredible. Full of human nuance, exquisitely paced (with this tremendous sense of narrative convergence and impending disaster), and well crafted on just about every level. Occasionally indulgent with its superfluous UFOs and excess of speechifying, but never to great detriment. It shares a lineage with the Coens' film, but it stands apart in a way that the first season doesn't.

I love Season 2. Most people love Season 1 a bit more cuz of the strength of Billy Bob's performance. But I just loved the nuance to all the characters. Hanzee, Mike, and Lou are so good.

Likewise! And the dynamics between them.

Billy Bob's a lot of fun in Season 1, and his performance is great, but he's not really a character. He's an angel of death like Chigurh in NCfOM, except the writers don't bother to justify his actions with any kind of narrative logic (which I actually liked - he's very transparently a catalyst for the drama the other characters are faced with).

I like that they sort of split Billy Bob's character in season 2. So Hanzee and Mike kinda got part of his characteristics but it fit them even much more. Also I liked the little nods to Coens movies which some people here didn't like.

Fargo opening episode was good. Was the German thing a parable? Or was it a reference to A Serious Man?
