THE CONVERSATION (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974)

This movie carries an attitude I can recognize: I'm proud of the work I do, and the work I do is killing me. The flick's mystery generates great suspense and one hell of a surprise at the end, and Hackman's Harry Caul breaks the heart as a man caught between pride and loneliness.
I just watched this for the first time this year as well, and while I thought it could've been better if the pacing/plot was a little less thin and stretched-out (the after-convention party scene probably should've lasted half as long as it ended up), I still really enjoyed the wonderfully paranoid, disquieting atmosphere of the film's best moments a lot anyway (that scene where
Harry's trapped in the elevator with his target, wow!).

I really liked this one. Compared to what I've heard about the Sex and the City movies and Entourage, which I'll never see because they're apparently terrible, I think it steered clear of not reveling in hedonism and materialism.
Awkafina's character's reactions, the obnoxiousness of Bernard, Nick's mother's regrets, etc.
provide a humanizing undercurrent that did a good job at making all that wealth not seem like a celebration of greed, but, well...crazy.

This is a nice throwback. I had a VHS tape of this one (dubbed from either IFC or Sundance back when they were still showing independent/underground film), must have been from '02, and I shared it around a lot for a couple of years but forgot about it. It is a fine piece of work.

2019 Best Picture Oscar nominees ranked:

1. Roma
2. The Favourite
3. A Star is Born
4. BlacKkKlansman
5. Black Panther
6. Green Book
7. Vice
8. Bohemian Rhapsody

The first two are the only ones that deserve the nomination. 3-5 are solid films overall, and #6 is somewhat of a guilty Oscar bait pleasure. 7-8 are the only films in the bunch I dislike.

I've only seen the 3 "bolded" ones, but would probably rank them like you. I also agree with your assessment about those three.

Nice to see a list that isn't the general boring orthodoxy. And one where I probably haven't seen about half of the films listed.

I really need to finish The Human Condition. I watched the first film about five years ago, and just fizzled out. It was just so daunting.

Post Re: Lists Lists Lists

The decision to name so many of those in their native language caused a few goof-ups for me. Had to do some Googling.

26. AN OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE
29. UMBERTO D
39. PLAYTIME
40. CITIZEN KANE
45. THE GRAND ILLUSION
50. BREATHLESS

77. TOKYO STORY
81. ORPHEE
83. RASHOMON
88. THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
93. BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN
99. ONE FROGGY EVENING

16 is better than I thought once I started seeing all those eye-crossing names. Here are some of them with translations:

3. IL CASO MATTEI (The Mattei Affair)
10. LES JEUX INTERDITS (Forbidden Games)
14. LA REGLE DU JEU (The Rules of the Game)
17. ROMA CITTA APERTA (Rome Open City)

I think it's Bergman's The Passion of Anna. En Passion is the original title according to IMDB.
