Post Re: JediMoonShyne's [World Championship of Film] II

Image
Image
Image Adapted from a semi-autobiographical short story by Arnošt Lustig, Diamonds of the Night is director Jan Němec's first full-length feature and concerns the survival of two boys who escape from a train, presumably destined for a Nazi concentration camp. We witness the boys, played by Ladislav Jánsky and Antonín Kumbera, as they clatter through a dense forest before wearily traversing miles of rugged terrain, all the while dreaming of a return to their home town of Prague. The pair eventually come upon a farm from which they take bread and milk before moving on - perhaps provoking the local group of elderly militia that catches up with and captures the boys towards the end of the film.

Image Rebels of the Neon God is director Tsai Ming-liang's debut film and the first in a trilogy - followed by Vive l'Amour and The River - starring Lee Kang-sheng as Hsiao-kang, a confused youth who stalks others through the unforgiving, urban sprawl of nineties Taipei. Disgruntled with his home life (his mother and father are again played by Lu Hsiao-ling and Tien Miao) and tired of attending an overcrowded school, Hsiao-kang begins following a young couple - particularly the handsome male half of this couple, Ah-tze, played by Chen Chao-jung. Hsiao-kang aspires to be just like Ah-tze: a loose individual, without the pressures of school and family, stealing from phone boxes and arcade machines to get by.
Image
Image The warm kitchen of a low farmhouse; an inviting smell, perhaps cooked meat and rosemary, hangs in the air. A brown-eyed boy watches from an open doorway, eying the scene greedily; his lips are cracked, his muddied shoes in tatters. He blinks, before assaulting the defenseless cook and fleeing with a loaf of bread under each arm. He blinks, before ravishing her helpless body and leaving it prone on the dusty wooden floor. He blinks. She takes up a knife and begins carving thick, generous slices. This is the deviating, elusive, innovative narrative of director Jan Němec's masterful debut feature Diamonds of the Night which, with just one (altered and repeated) scene alone, manages to convey an entire world of hunger, fear and sexual desperation. Elsewhere, it is the director's auditory approach that ensnares our ears and captures our imaginations. Němec frequently and self-consciously dislocates sound from image, or else exaggerates either in a modernist manner so as to achieve a desired effect. And we can't help but be affected, as through sliding down a slippery sensory slope. We recoil at the heightened presence of ants that swarm around a blinking eye; we turn away in disgust at the crass, amplified sound of munching and slurping from the mouths of old men; we, too, feel the welcome relief of a sudden, seemingly implausible downpour against dry, dirt-encrusted skin. This shifting, often playful approach to editing, as well as a noticeable lack of dialogue, lends Diamonds of the Night an all-important level of ambiguity that Němec then fully exploits for the film's chilling climax. All we know is that these boys represent anonymous, universal victims; pursued and persecuted by everything that is ugly, decrepit and immoral in the world.

Image The deity that is referred to in the English title of Tsai Ming-liang's Rebels of the Neon God is not, as we might be forgiven for assuming, some kind of fluorescent, celestial being who, in his gaudy attire, represents all that is wrong with modern day Taipei. No, the "Neon God" part instead refers to the Legend of Nezha; the rebellious son of one of the Lords of Heaven, known for his fiery temperament and clashes with his father. It is Nezha that Hsiao-kang's hysterical mother compares him to, part-way through the film, and which prompts her son's brief practical joke of whooping and dancing fanatically. Nezha being struck by his father's miniature pagoda is a common image in Chinese classical mythology, and is represented both here and in The River by Hsiao-kang's father using brute force to discipline his son. Indeed, the tempestuous father-son relationship that is conceived here and continued in Tsai's later The River is an integral part of both films, as is the son's exploring of his homosexual identity. Hsiao-kang's idolising of Ah-tze is just as much a yearning for a less conventional, more stimulating life as it is a personal confronting of his own confused sexuality. He is drawn towards the idealised, masculine form of Ah-tze from the very moment the character shatters his father's wing mirror - in turn, shattering his ultimately uninterested, uninteresting existence. Hsiao-kang looks on enviously from his passive position in the passenger seat of his father's taxi as Ah-tze drives off on his large, powerful motorcycle - a phallic symbol if there ever was one - hinting perhaps that his later act of vandalism is not so much revenge-fueled as it is a product of sexual jealously.

Very tough call.

Rebels was so... fulfilling, I guess? Since I've seen the rest of the trilogy.

Diamonds was something else.

How could any Christopher Doyle film be associated with such a word?

MrCarmady wrote:

It could really do with being restored, yes. As I think someone mentioned previously.

Plus, the current rip on KG has those big hard-coded dual subs. Distracting.

It has been restored, at least a year and a half ago (when I saw it at a festival). That hasn't been released on DVD yet?

Then it needs to be restored again!

The Terrorizers is an older film but looks incredible in comparison.

The Schanelec, perhaps.

At least, it was on my shortlist along with the Kiarostami, Jia, Kieslowski and the other Němec.

If it has, it's not made its way to KG yet.

The KG rip is just nasty, sadly, most of Yang's work is in similar shape, The Terrorizers, Yi-Yi and Mahjong aside.

Are you not mentioning the fake-out for spoiler reasons? This might be the earliest example of a narrative fake-out I've seen in cinema, well before Hong Sang-soo. And I don't mean a single moment or scene, but a good natural progression of the narrative that is later revealed as...false? Or is it? And what does it mean? It branches off; could have happened either way. Also, I think Yang handles violence more intelligently than probably any other filmmaker.

And yeah, The Terrorizers was obviously a heavy influence on both Hong and Jia. Did you recently rewatch it on Blu or something?

Post Re: JediMoonShyne's [World Championship of Film] II

I watched three movies from this thread this week:

A Time to Live and a Time to Die – Far from my favorite by Hou. He was almost 40 when he made it, yet it doesn’t show any signs of perspective. It reminded me of a recent interview I watched, where I got the impression that he still has one foot in that thuggish lifestyle. I have no idea if that's true or not. On the other hand, I also watched Goodbye, South, Goodbye and loved it.

Raise the Red Lantern – I'm no fan of Zhang, but this was entertaining and lovely to look at… red lanterns in the dusk! I thought the plot was alternately fascinating and silly, though.

A Man Escaped – Perfect. I loved this movie. So much suspense, made just bearable by the title. Really, amazingly well made.
