We had a fire in my apartment building on Monday morning, the floor above mine. I heard it was either an electrical issue or a meth lab.

Probably the meth lab.

"Folding Ideas" is fantastic if you're into new media and editing. His channel blew up some after his savage and clear takedown of Suicide Squad.

"Game Makers Toolkit" by Mark Brown is fantastic if you're into game design. His "Boss Keys" Zelda series stands out, but I prefer his unpacking of fundamental platform design.

And only 6 more days 'til The Last Jedi, which I'm genuinely, honestly excited for, not just as a Star Wars fan, but as a "hey, this new Star Wars movie actually looks really, really really good". Well, for me, it's actually just 5 more days 'til TLJ, since my local theaters are having some early showings of it on Thursday, and I've already bought an advance ticket to one. Here's hoping it's at least somewhat better than the last advance showing I bothered checking out, which was... fucking Justice League...

I'm very curious about how the new movie will be, I'm not so so so invested in the franchise that I'm expecting to have many strong feelings no matter the quality, mostly I'm just looking forward to hanging out with my friends before and after we see the movie. the energy I get in the room seeing these on opening weekend is what I imagine it feels like to be in church when it's 100% full of true-believers.

I also predict that Chewbacca will adopt one of those cute bird things and name it "Han". and y'all will eat that up.

JL wasn't a bad movie per se, and it certainly wasn't anywhere near as big a disastrous clusterfuck as Batman Vs. Superman, but the converse of that is, it's a much less ambitious, interesting film to dissect for its failures. It's almost the worse film in a sense since it's far more generic/mediocre as a result. Better to be hot or cold than lukewarm, am I right?

speaking of which, I bet someone major is going to die and someone major is going to turn 'evil' (until the next movie when they become 'good'). otherwise how else we will we know this movie is the DAAAARRRRRK SECOND CHAPTER.

what with all the awards buzz around Mark Hamill, I have to imagine he's going to be the former. and maybe Rey kills him. and that's why she's evil! but Luke was kind of an asshole. so maybe it's ambiguous! ambiguous enough that Rey isn't beyond redemption? probably!

I've never seen any on-line and I've been doing the torrent thing for years. I know they have A Time To Live, A Time To Die but I don't know how old that one is or where to find it. You might have to ask for an invite to karagarga.

I think the only Star Wars movie I want at this point is a Christopher Guest mockumentary about the Hugo Boss-style fashion house that designs the Empire/First Order's uniforms.

Post Re: The YMCA Club

Yoooo, that new Star Wars movie has ISSUES. Let me tell you. While overall it's better than TFA, in that it feels like it had an original artistic voice behind it whom truly wanted to do something different and unique. A technical marvel that features great characters and performances from everyone.

HOWEVER, Holy Shit does this movie have some major blunders I cannot wait to discuss. Like, where to even start? Should say something about the quality of the filmmaking overall that these issues don't ruin the film, but suffice it to say Plinkett will have a field day with this one on a mechanical level.

I'm going to repost what I wrote on Reddit for a lazy sake. MAAAAD SPOILERS BELOW!

There's a weird fixation in the comments going on about Snoke and how the movie fails by killing him off and never explaining his backstory. He's a big, old, Sith monster who is strong in the force. He is essentially the same character as Palpatine but less interesting. How would the film have benefited from explaining who he is or leaving him alive for a predictable third act resolution? This movie makes the plot of 9 way more nebulous than it would have been otherwise. What great piece of information to the Snoke puzzle would have made it satisfying? Okay, it's revealed that he is Darth Plagueis, so what? Is Plagueis a character we are invested in, or is he some character we know another character knew a story about? Even with this information, it's still implausible that a seemingly more powerful Sith than Palpatine was just hanging around for God knows how long and just sat out the rise and fall of the Republic and Empire, just to show up at some point in the past 30 years with the charisma, capital, and political vision to launch a nebulous powerplay for the galaxy. Snoke is a bad character from the start who I feel Johnson cut out because keeping him would be a shackle on the direction your story can go. He adds nothing meaningful that we haven't already seen. It's a very weird move, sure, but something to get angry about? The reason you see the movie? What a bizarre thing to be fixated on. This movie has plenty of other problems (and Rey's parentage isn't one either) to get mad about.

The way I see it, the script could have used another pass through. You go out of your way to establish Luke's X-Wing, and then in the end of the movie when Luke "returns" you don't have him die on Craite. You bait and switch to go back to the Ireland planet, and have him die there. What is the point of that? Why not just have him get "cut down" and keep things more efficient? The same thing is happening either way. I get the two suns imagery being important, but there's no reason Craite can't also have two suns.

The whole Casino mission is a mess. The film sets up a mysterious character wearing a special pin, which ends up as a dead an end as you can get in a film. They get imprisoned only to find another rogue who can get them out and do their plan. They spend time developing this new rogue into a "complex" character who nicely gives back Rose's charm when he's done using it. After they get caught, somehow he is being paid for their capture even though it was BB-HATE that caught them. He then disappears from the film, like immediately during the editing around the almost-execution. Why wasn't he the one piloting the AT-ST as a distraction and not....BB-8? Let's not also forget the weird theming going on in the Casino adventure. The execution is way off. A substory about Fox-Horse racing is meant to be a parallel for the how the First Order treats its citizens, but it's executed in a fashion where it comes off as an animal rights piece all of the sudden instead, and you feel that jarring tonal shift where it feels so far removed that it becomes filler. Let's not forget those 'too-cute' Disney kids that tend to the animals. Bad, nonsensical trope used to try and force emotional investment from the audience. Why are all of these only human kids here and being trusted to do this work? What happens when they grow up? You will have a serious problem on your hands. I was having flashbacks to the cringier parts of Temple of Doom. I would also like to point out that having main characters leave a moment of crisis to go on a Casino adventure halfway across the galaxy robs the tension and sense of urgency from said crisis.

Let's also talk about the Pit of Darkness on the Ireland planet which the purpose of is never properly explained. Luke was scared when Rey immediately honed in on it, but that never goes anywhere. Rey physically enters the Dark Side pit and finds nothing in there. A weird Mirror of Erised scene happens, but there is nothing actually "Dark Side" about the pit. It doesn't make her face her demons or try and seduce her, it's just some tense build-up to a parent reveal that fakes her out. The movie plays up in the first half how she is so suseptible to the Dark Side, but despite her insane behavior she is still considered by Snoke himself to only be worth killing because she will never turn from the light?

Also, Rey moving all of the rocks in the end has no dramatic weight because the audience has seen that force abilities come naturally to her and has never struggled with using the force before in anyway.

They seriously needed to give this script another once over.

We're about to see some interesting backlash on this film. Currently it has a 93% on RT, but the audience score is in the 60's. For comparison, TFA is at 93% with an 89% audience score. Age of Ultron is at 75% with an 83% audience score.
