It's where he can't lie, which means he blurts things out constantly.

Early Jim Carrey movies have not aged well, but I'll be goddamned if that mechanical rhino scene from Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls doesn't single-handedly redeem the man's entire filmography.

I need to re-watch these.

Probably the only thing that's mostly aged well is Dumb and Dumber.

Dumb and Dumber is probably the most consistently funny of those movies, but the rhino thing is the single funniest gag he was involved in, even if the rest of the movie is a wash.

As for the first Ace Ventura, it's got a mean streak of transphobia that really sours it in this day and age.

Pretty much. He's obviously a talented guy, but it seems like he either can't figure out the whole acting gig the way his equally manic stand-up predecessor Robin Williams did, or nobody can fit him into that mould, though it seems like Peter Weir and Michel Gondry made a go at it.

Yeah, he's in the painter phase and none of it is pretty. Up there with Sean Penn's novel as far as sheer grotesquery is concerned

Carrey is kind of sadder for me. Everyone is trashing on Penn's novel, so he has near-unanimous evidence that he sucks in that medium, and I truly believe it should be easier to move past that assessment. Carrey, unfortunately, has been subject to at least one fawning documentary and what I measure as relatively little informed criticism of his painting. It probably doesn't help that his recent political paintings are clearly less refined compared with his earlier work.

Eternal Sunshine was the peak dramatic filling for Carrey, and an interesting commentary on what exactly comedy is when you strip it down to it's neurological essence. It's still a wacky movie but, yeah, more manic depressive and indicative of what Carrey goes through as a person - to the point where you can't really do much dramatically past that. Punch Drunk Love as well, it's like a meta Adam Sandler movie if his comedic sensibilities were played entirely literal and it's so definitive a study that his dramatic side went stale in favor of Netflix comedy. Basically, those movies are too damn good

Michel Gondry destroyed both Jim Carrey and himself. I've watched a lot of his work and yeah, you just can't top that

That's what cracks me up about PDL. He's playing the same character he always does but people actually respond to him realistically.

This was the way I felt about Carrey and Cable Guy, which is probably why that's one of his only films I really liked.
