It will be the centerpiece of the gallery. With all the other pieces with a "TBD" sign. :P

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

I just finished watching ...and God Created Woman (Vadim, 1956). When I saw the opening shot I recalled having seen the movie before, in my second semester film history class. That would have been Spring, 1971. The Criterion restored DVD version is beautiful to behold, and in its full Cinemascope aspect ratio. The colors are rich and smooth on the screen. A dust and scratch removing software package was applied, and the film looks pristine, nowadays.

In contrast to what I just saw, my recollection is of a film that is 4:3 aspect in black and white. Scratched emulsion. Dust and spots. Because that's how we saw it. I guess in 16mm in 1971, there were only Academy ratio films available for projection in classrooms. I wonder how many films I saw in class, of those made after 1954, that were actually panned and scanned from a wider format image!

Once again, I am thankful to have lived to this time when film technology makes so many good movies available for people like you and me to watch, even though we don't own a projector or a theater. I don't know how many of you younger folk have had a similar experience: realizing that the version of the film you remember is not the version that people in theaters saw.

Nowadays, many old films with Academy ratio get cropped for widescreen TV's. And before that, many of us here grew up watching 4:3 pan and scanned versions of films on video, I presume.

But my personal favorite is watching Book of Eli on a plane. I remember not seeing it before after bad reviews, but the one that had stuck with me was a review of a friend of mine. His main gripe was about the fake CGI blood and how that was indicative of what was wrong with Hollywood these days etc. But on the plane version, all of that was edited out and I found it no problem. :D

My mom grew up with 4:3 pan so all she wanted was full screen movies when she bought them on DVD since she felt she was getting the "whole" picture. She has like a 65" Big Screen tv but it was 4:3 ratio so she didnt like how the movie only used up....I want to say probably half the screen. I tried to explain to her that you get the "full" picture that was intended with widescreen since they just zoomed in the movie for fullscreen.

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

I've learned that some people gripe bout the edge borders (left and right sides) when they watch material originally produced at 4:3 on a 16:9 screen. This process of showing the full image as shot on a screen of a different ratio will always confuse some people, I guess.

And it's true, as the Colonel noted, that a lot of films and television shows have been cropped top and bottom to conform them to the modern widescreen televisions. Probably due to that first bit I wrote about up there. There must be a technique like pan and scan, only vertical. What's it called?

Tilt and scan doesn't have the rhyming quality of the other term.

I saw Book of Eli from a Netflix DVD, and have no recollection about the quantity or quality of the blood in the movie! :D

Another thing that used to happen, but probably doesn't any more, is that 16mm prints of color films would be made for TV release, in black and white. I recall watching a film called The Boy with Green Hair one morning after my dad had finally sprung for a color TV...and even though the words 'Color by Technicolor' were prominently displayed in the opening credits, the film was clearly black and white. This puzzled me. At the time I didn't know about 16mm reduction prints, or that you could make a B&W print of a color film.

Since then I've bought the film on a DVD, and it's in color.

Wasnt that done because back then a majority of tv sets where black and white. So they would show it in color in theaters and then it'd get...I wanna say "decolored" for the TV showing?

Pretty much. But even after 1965 when color television sales really took off, a lot of the prints that were around for TV exhibition were still black and white ones originally printed for the era when color TVs were too expensive for most to afford. It took over 10 years before most color films were broadcast in color, except for the national networks (there were three of those). The local stations had to buy color film chains to show their movies in color. And that took bucks and time to switch over.

The prices of color TVs began to fall, but my dad paid $970.00 for the 20" rectangular one he bought in 1968. The inflation calculator says that would equal an unbelievable $6,790.08 of buying power in 2017 dollars! No wonder the old man refused to buy a color television in the 1950s. But I wonder if prices are actually 600% of what they were in 1968.

Minimum wage for my first job was $1.60 per hour in 1968. That's supposedly the equivalent of $10.80 today. And a lot of prices I notice are about 10 times what they were back then. Bread was 35 cents a loaf. Milk was a quarter a gallon (which means it's now 20 times as expensive in the Hills of Arkansas). I could ride my bike down to the McDonald's on University Ave., and give them two quarters for a burger, some fries, and a milkshake...and receive a dime and a nickel in change.

My parents used to regale us with stories of nickel loaves of bread from the 1940s, and I knew I'd never get to tell my kids tales of prices that were really low like that.

Little did I know!

When I worked for Ch 13 in Memphis in 1973, the movies that were broadcast on the morning Dialing for Dollars show were 16mm prints that were circulated from station to station. The station owned a few film prints of its own, so if one didn't come in on time, they could sub another. When I would come in mid-mornings on some of the days I worked, the projector on the film chain would often be purring along, showing whatever the day's movie was. Meanwhile, the engineers might be back in the videotape room dubbing Lawrence Welk from the circulating videotape copy (open-reel 2" tape) to one of the recyclable reels the station kept on hand. Then, that episode would be sent off to the next station. Probably each station across the US would broadcast a different Welk episode each week...I mean different from station to station. I never asked.

Talk shows and others produced on video (switched live, of course) would be sent around as 2" dubs, copied by the local stations, and sent along. There were other syndicated filmed shows that were like that, too. They were laid off to tape from 35mm, and shipped around to the broadcasting stations that way. It was an improvement from showing 16mm prints of the television shows set up on the local film chains. A few years later the movies would be rented as 2" videotape and it made Dialing for Dollars look a lot better.

It's all digital, these days.

Are you a Melville fan, Ace?

I just watched "Second Wind," Le Deuxieme Souffle (1966). I usually enjoy Melville's films, even though I am not a fan of gangster movies as a genre.

I dont think I can safely say I have seen a Melville film. I kinda hated my film studies class for glossing over huge parts of the film studies. She didn't essentially take us thru film. She started with the great train robbery. Then went on a tanget thru Flip the frog. She completely ignored George Meleis. And then after it that it was just normal movies. We didnt see any John Ford. We did see Mr Smith goes to Washington. I think that's the only notable one I can remember. For remakes she had us watched this Korean movie about food and a father and his daughters. Then we watched the american remake with hispanic people. I still dont think that was the route she should have gone.

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

My film studies courses were in the 1970s (1970 and 1971), and we saw a few films made outside America, but no Melville. After all, he was still making films back then! My first exposure to his style was with Bob, le flambeur only a few years ago. Then with Les enfants terribles. These are different styles. I like them both.

I've had Le Samouraï on my radar for a few years, but haven't seen it yet. I also want to watch Le cercle rouge (1970) which we couldn't have seen in our film studies course, because it was just released in France while I was in my first semester of film history. Who could have predicted that his films would be classics by now? Surely, someone did.

Film is just too broad in scope to actually study in a single semester, or two. Sorry your experience wasn't satisfying. All those years ago there just weren't as many classic films as there are now. Think how many more films have been made since 1970! Things that you've always thought of as old films, classic films...hadn't been made yet.

Careers were made while I was alive, but unaware of the great film directors from other countries. There was less attention paid to foreign films back then. You saw them and porn at "art theaters." That's why I love DVDs. It's a cheap way to get to see the cinema of other countries. I'm glad I lived long enough to experience that.

Since you were in school, and directing your own study of film, as it were, have your tastes broadened because you've exposed yourself to previously unknown directors and films from other parts of the world? I know Stu's interests have been expanded through his curiosity and what he's learned about at RT forums and here. So have mine, I must admit.

Then you are certainly not averse to subtitles!

I'll take that as a recommendation. I've seen a few of Ceylan's early films. I've promoted that to the top of my list as my next watch in my Flix queue (it was in there, but in the middle). Thanks.

I enjoyed it, too. I've seen Distant (2002) and Three Monkeys (2008) along with this one. I may have seen Climates (2006) but I'm not sure.

The aspect of Ceylan's films (his surname is pronounced Jay-lan in Turkish, in case you don't know) that I like is his almost total avoidance of music on the soundtrack. For example, as far as I can remember (and I just watched the film last night) the only musical touch in Anatolia is a few notes that Kenen hums to himself at one point.

This film is an ostensible police procedural, but the procedure makes a framework for introspection, and even fits in a Chekhov short story. Ceylan dedicated his second film to Chekhov, by the way, so he is an admirer of the man's work. The actor who played the Mukhtar of the village, Ercan Kesal, is an actual physician in that village in real life. According to IMDb the event depicted in the fictional film is based on real events that happened to Kesal.

Ceylan often takes his ideas from reality, and doesn't Hollywood them up. His films move slowly, but with a purpose. Not everyone would like them, probably, and I wasn't sure I would as I watched Distant a few years ago. But the film drew me in, and held me for the running time. Since then I simply settle back and let Ceylan do his oddball screen thing, and so far have enjoyed the uniqueness of his vision and tales told.

It was actually very funny. I didnt expect to laugh as much as I did. Also the nighttime photography was so good. I was just engrossed in the whole aspect of it. Although I liked the subtle thing at the end with the doctor got "mud" on his face after his diagnosis.

Hey, there is one theater playing these in the area, but it's in North Little Rock. I guess I could get there by 10:00am to see Kubo. I'd like to see it in 3D if they show it that way. I own 8, 3D Blu-rays, but I never have afforded myself a 3D-capable (4K) monitor, so I can only watch the 2D versions. Ha ha!

When I checked about 3D televisions last year at Best Buy the associate told me that the 3D thing seems to be gone, and there are several HD and 4K models that are 3D-ready, but they don't even put it on the in-store cards any more.

My guess is that it's $$$ to get the players and AV receivers and televisions to make it useful at home. Oh, and most of the sets used HD and electronic shutter glasses when the "boom" was on. So it fizzled.

BTW, the guy told me that they make 3D capable sets, they just don't advertise them as 3D TVs any longer. Or something like that. And not as many models carry the feature. But with 4K you can use polarized glasses (like in theaters) and still get the HD effect, so there are no batteries to charge, and the glasses are lighter in weight. The studios have not stopped issuing 3D Blu-rays, either.

I've bought Blu-rays (2D) of movies I want to watch some day. And I haven't watched them all yet, of course. But you're buying 4Ks much the same way, it seems. :) Then again, I'm assuming you can't watch them because you have no 4K television...but I could be wrong.

I have never particularly liked 3D. I would say I remember seeing (what I thought) an improvement when seeing flicks that were filmed in 3D over converted to 3D. But if I can save a few bucks and see it in 2D... I most likely will. I've much preferred seeing something in IMAX (like TDK) and have the full scope of the screen immerse me. Can't really get that at home though. I have yet to buy any 4Ks, although I can definitely see myself going in that direction over 3D.

There are definitely some movies that used the 3D effect really well especially if they were filmed in the format. I remember I was real adamant to my friend that we see HUGO in 3D because that's how Scorsese filmed it. And yes that movie was great in 3D. I even bought the 3D Blu because of it.

Didn't look up to see if Life of Pi was filmed in or converted to 3D, but the effect really helps that movie, too.

For Godzilla (2014) I didn't notice any real substantive difference. Pi is probably the only film I've seen where the lack of 3D made it a completely different thing to see.

I always wanted to see Life of Pi in 3D. Never got a chance to see it. I assume with all the ratio changes it'd be pretty neat.

Fascinating pop-culture mashups.

EDIT EDIT: Here's one marginally pertinent to a discussion about Covenant in another thread.

I'm going to take that as a recommendation for purchase. I've seen Hugo twice, once streaming on Netflix, and once from my Walmart Blu-bin Blu-ray disc. The 3D version is only 16.98, so I think I'll order it. There are shots that even in 2D are clearly meant for the dimensional effect, such as the long flying shot that ends on Hugo's eyes peering through a slot in a wall (is it in the clock itself?).

I have my eye on several older titles that were produced in 3D, and those from the 1950s you know were shot in 3D: The Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came from Outer Space, Kiss Me Kate. Earlier I bought Dial M for Murder in a 2D/3D package.

I've also noticed at Blu-ray.com that Legend is converting certain properties into 3D, and I'm interested in a Three Stooges conversion that is also colorized, featuring the four shorts that fell into public domain. It's cheap, and gives me a chance to see what might be done in 3D conversion when you can be sure the source was shot in normal 2D!

Can you recommend any others to acquire? I already own 8 3D discs. I'll want to get more, now that a 3-D capable 4K OLED set is scheduled to be delivered Friday morning. [BTW: Other 3D Blu's I've slowly acquired are WWII in 3D, The Adventures of Tintin, Mad Max Fury Road, Life of Pi, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Godzilla (2014). And a 3-title Blu-ray Blu-bin set has Conan (2011) in a 3D version, but what little of it I could bear to watch in 2D makes me think the horrible movie will just be a barf-fest in 3D, so I'm not likely to watch it.]

And how about some movies that ought to be exemplary in 4K? I've looked through the list but don't see any that grab my attention enough for me to want to own them at 4K prices. Many of the titles I would want I already own as Blu-ray discs.

I noticed that the new Kong: Skull Island movie will be released on July 18, in a set with 4K, Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and Ultraviolet. Probs not the best film ever made, but it would have two of my new interests in the box.

Certian Movies do look good in 4k but they're only 2K upscales. even then they still look good. Any of the big budget movies recently have good transfers. Like the Revenant and the Martian. As far as 3D I own a bunch of those i'd have to see my list but I know for sure certain Pixar movies look great in 3D. I remember Hank saying Brave in 3D looked great in 3D. And also his story about watching it with his daughter <3. Coraline 3D the version I have uses the anaglyph glasses but I remember the 3D being great in that. Doctor Strange uses the SFX really well in 3D because it has a bunch of mind bending scenes in 3D. Transformers 4 in 3D has the full IMAX ratio (or 1:78:1) exclusive to the 3D version. The how to train your dragon movies are great in 3D. I remmeber thinking the first one had great 3D even better than Avatar. Oh and Gravity in 3D was really good. Dredd 3D was good although I know it doesnt use a seperate disc for the 3D version.

And there's always sales for 4k discs if you look around. Best buy usually runs a promo of buy 2 get 1 free on 4k discs. I bought Star Trek Beyond in 4k because I just didnt want to pay the premium on 3D disc but you can the 3D disc by itself for cheap.

Which tv did you get Gort? And is it HDR enabled?

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

I got an LG OLED55C6P, which is HDR enabled. I bought a new HDMI cable that is also HDR-ready. I'm not sure the one I've been using wouldn't have worked just as well, but I didn't want to have to run out to buy one after installation!

I found an IMAX 4k, 3D, Blu package that Walmart has for only $15 that might be my first foray into 4K discs. It's a history of the guy who figured out where Monarch butterflies spend the winter. From Shout Factory, I think. I might see if one of the stores around here stocks that title. I am certain that my Blu player will handle 4K ... but I have a slight doubt, so I don't want to go hog wild buying 4K discs before I know for sure. It says in the book that it will play UHD content, but where it shows logos it doesn't show the 4K logo, although there actually isn't a standard logo for 4K, at least not yet. And I'm hoping that's why it isn't in the little logo-cache under "Your Blu-ray player will play discs with these logos:" in the manual.

So...test first, and then buy. <----- my motto

Although, frankly, most of the films I find on 4K don't seem to be worth what they would cost. Some I might buy would be triple or quadruple-dipping. I wonder if there's a 4K transfer of Once Upon a Time in the West. Might look that up.

And I'm waiting for Criterion to announce that it's introducing Criterion 4K within the next...decade.

It has to say plays "Ultra HD Bluray" or something like that.

And yeah the C6 is a great tv.

Missed this last night. I have that one, too. But I found this last night, and ordered it. I hope I didn't misunderstand, but I think all three are 3D Blu-ray, not just Coraline. And I already have the 2D versions of each. Plus, I bought the 3D version of Kubo, as I posted earlier.

The paperwork for my Samsung Blu-ray player says it plays UHD in a table in the back.

But I still want to see it do that thang with my own eyes. So, I ordered the 4K/3D/Blu-ray Flight of the Butterflies tonight, and both the Laika set and it will be here on Saturday.

Gee, I remember when getting something you couldn't wait to have took 2 weeks minimum.

As it turns out, much of what I disliked about the movie in 2D is remedied by seeing it in 3D. Oddly, it seems to have been shot and edited for a 3D experience, and the flattening to two dimensions causes some of the dynamic and photographic quality to be lost.

So, I was wrong. I still think it will be a rotter of a flick overall, but I might watch it all the way through someday.

This TV has a 3D feature I didn't expect: I can now see the news and other 2D content with real-time 3D conversion. And it's better than I imagined it would be when I first saw it. I discovered the feature accidentally when setting up my off-air stations, pressing the 3D button on the remote to see what it would do, and then went around the channels to see what effect it would have. Oddly, only in a re-run of a sit-com where a darts target board was in the background, did the algorithm misplace any objects. The dartboard seemed to hover in the air, out of focus above the protagonists head!

I discovered that it won't work very well with lo-rez B&W DVDs, such as the 1940 Tom Brown's School Days DVD. I tried it with a fairly lo-rez color one, though. It did acceptably well fake 3D-ing Tarzan and the Jungle Boy (1968) which is wide-screen and in color.

And Godzilla (2014) is just as marvelous in 3D terms as it was in the theater. I haven't looked up whether it was a post conversion or shot 3D. I watched Dial M for Murder (1954) this afternoon. It took me a few minutes to acclimate myself to how Hitchcock used 3D, but once I got used to it I have to say the film was enhanced. Fourth viewing for lifetime, first in 3D.

And I have fast enough internet service to stream 4K from Youtube, so I saw some really perty pitchers that way. A real 4K Blu-ray arrives tomorrow.

Mad Max Fury Road is a post converted film (I learned), and it kind of shows. But I'm not sure George Miller didn't have his techs play with the L/R eye positioning in order to expand the z-axis and apparent depth.

I watched it thinking that the real-time 3D convertor built into the set might be the beginning of commercial scale 3D conversion. Like a pared down but functional version of the algorithm. And with this pared-down version you don't have techs who can go back and be 3D Generalists and fix flaws. You have to live with them. But they're gone quickly, because it's in real-time. Heh.

Some movies that were filmed in 3D like Pirates of the Carribean 4 still didnt use depth feature.

So I think it's up to the director how much they want it to "Pop".

Fury Road looks like old ViewMaster slides.

Kubo looks like you're just looking at the real thing.

Godzilla (2014) is between them. Godzilla looks fatter in 3D. Hee hee. "Does this process make me look fat?"

Fortunately, so far, I haven't seen any ghosting with my selected 3D discs. Uh, I'm up to 21 movies, now, from 8 a few days ago. (turns red). None of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have been on my 3D radar. When they hit the Blu-bin at Walmart I might consider picking one up. But that's not going to happen...is it? So far I've ignored the 2D versions of those movies that pop up out of the depths of the bin.

And I already confessed that one of my 3D movies just happened to be in a 3-title Blu-bin purchase. But I didn't know it until I opened the case at home. I wonder if the 3D disc just happened to accidentally slip into a stack of discs, and I got the only Blu-ray 3D disc in the entirety of Walmart Blu-bindom. No idea.

Because the 3D process uses alternating vertical rows of pixels to create the right and left eye images, it cuts the resolution to 1080 lines. So you'd only see HD resolution. But it might still work. I'll try it out, and issue a report.

Oh, I found out yesterday that it's only available on LG brand TVs. The first I saw of the Indy 500 2-car collision with the fly-through the air moment, just happened to come on in a sports news break while I was watching golf on TV with the 3D-faker turned on. And it worked so well that it was almost like watching native 3D, what with all the motion between frames, and debris from the cars going everywhere. As for the wreck itself: Safety equipment can work. Only a few years ago at least one of those drivers would be getting fitted for a wooden box.

It's $13.01 new at Amazon. Didn't find it for five bucks, except you can buy a used one for $3.94 plus $3.99 shipping. That's still not bad. I ordered it. I've seen the film in 2D and it isn't exactly bad, and I love animated films (wanted to make them, but never had an opportunity).

Haha! I just realized that you were writing about the second film, which I haven't seen. I bought the original.

The 5 buck one says "This item is available because of the Add-on program
The Add-on program allows Amazon to offer thousands of low-priced items that would be cost-prohibitive to ship on their own. These items ship with qualifying orders over $25." If I'd a known that I'd have oredered it with yesterday's order. Shicks. Maybe it will remain this price for a while.

Thanks

EDIT: After reading about the second movie, I put it into my cart. When I order another 20 dollars worth, it will ship. I can wait.

Get it with Part 1! Since that one made great use of the 3D too. That way you at least have the nice set.

And speaking of nice set. The Amazing Spider-Man movies had some ok ish 3D. The first one was filmed in that but the image didnt pop out it was more about depth. 2nd One popped more even though it was post converted and that's just cuz they changed the color scheme which I think helped a lot.
