I think it's cool that the secret identity is kind of being semi-retired by the Marvel characters, or by the writers these days.
IronMan's no longer got a secret identity, and several know about who Spidey is, too.

But that sort of obviates any need for the costumes...except that the super hero is now as much the costume as it is the person inside the costume, at least
in the case of IronMan and to an extent the new Spidey.

I meant the moment
where he saves the Vulture from dying. Spidey has always been about never letting his villains die no matter how bad they are.And the last few movies have always had Spidey letting the villains die.

Also the nice homag
e to the rubble scene from the comics. Well not a homage but more as a direct reference.

Ah, yes! I didn't think of that as at the end, but you're right. That is more typical Spidey. A return to "true form" as it were.

I think the most recent Spider Man comics I've read would be most of the compilation volumes of Ultimate Spider Man, which the local library system has, and that's been years ago.

Ultimate Spider-Man is so good. I like that they pulled from that series as a main inspiration for this movie.

Trying this to see if the Photobucket files from a Rematch post will show up in this thread...

*attempts preview*

And they do not. The message "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image. Please verify that the URL you entered is correct." comes up for each new image that is in the post.

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

I saw Wrath of the Titans (2012) in the theater when it came out. I thought the 3D was awful, the story cluttered and incomprehensible, and I swore off ever seeing the remake of Clash of the Titans (1981, 2010). The first one had Bubo to un-recommend it, and the second one had a terrible sequel that did the same!

A few weeks ago, I bought the Clash Bluray 3D because it was $10. I watched it last night, and fell asleep a few times; didn't finish it. Tonight I started from the beginning, and saw the entire movie. Lord, the 3D conversion is the worst I've seen. Even worse than Wrath! I now understand why people said they hated 3D films, if this is what their experience of it was. EDIT: I just clicked on the awards page for the film at IMDb, and noticed that it was nominated for a Razzie in teh category "Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D." Wow, only nominated. What film won?!!? :D

When the conversion is good, it's as good as any I've seen so far. Maybe the problem is that they spent only $10 mil converting it. Maybe the problem is that 2D-3D conversion was a new thing at the time. A lot of it is sloppy, and mimics the worst of the sync errors you see in 1950s 2-strip 3D films. Anyway, because the film was made in 2D originally, I might some time watch the 2D version that came with it.

I liked the story better than the 1981 version, by the way. The Harryhausen version has beautiful stop-motion animation throughout, but I just thought it was too childish or something when I saw it in the 1990s. Bubo! Ugh! At least he got his comeuppance in the remake. Heh heh. The trailer kept me from seeing it when I was first exposed to it in 1981. I stayed away on purpose. And that was hard to do, because I practically worshiped Harryhausen and his work.

I am aware that you love Bubo. But not all of us do. ;)

Oh it was a rushed conversion. I think I remember them saying they didnt really spend any time on it when the movie came out. I remember reading on it and I think I watched in 3D and man was it bad. Here's from the Wiki.

Quote:
For the 2D to 3D conversion, Leterrier approached the studio early on about a 3D conversion, but it was expensive and very new technology.[20] After Avatar, the studio put pressure on Leterrier to convert the film. He was worried because of his previous concerns but was convinced after seeing the View-D conversion process.[21] Leterrier considered the 3D conversion to improve the viewing experience, and states that it should not be seen as a gimmick.[20]

In 2013 Leterrier said of the 3D conversion;

It was famously rushed and famously horrible. It was absolutely horrible, the 3D. Nothing was working, it was just a gimmick to steal money from the audience. I’m a good boy and I rolled with the punches and everything, but it’s not my movie

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

I recall reading that last line in the quotation somewhere. How Leterrier said it wasn't his film. But the source I found claimed that Leterrier wanted to make the film in 3D from the start, and the studio nixed that. The second 3D "bubble" has lasted a lot longer than the one that started in 1952.

The bad 3D conversion of Clash was one of the main reasons that my source suggested for Leterrier passing on the director's chair for Wrath. Have you heard that anywhere?

A lot of the post-converted films that I've seen or have in my collection look very good. Predator looks almost as if it were shot in 3D originally.

Dredd 3D's use of 3D is effective and enhances the storytelling.

I've noticed that when a film is actually composed for the 3d effect, a lot of the composition makes no sense in 2D. As you recall, I also noticed that about the stereographs that were made in the 1860s. The first time I watched Dredd back in 2013 (March 22, to be precise), a lot of it made no story sense because the objects that are separated in space in the original version were simply flat and all pasted together.

I was kind of mixed on Dredd; on one hand, much of its vision of the future was overly familiar and uninspiring, both visually and conceptually, and, except for part where an entire floor of the building got mowed down, most of the action scenes were disappointingly straightforward and stiff (it's obvious that Karl Urban or his stuntmen could barely see or move around in that visor/outfit). On the other hand, there were some interesting details in it occasionally (like Anderson's psychic abilities), and I liked how it wasn't afraid to have a realistic amount of civilian casulties in it, while still having an "anti-hero" like Dredd still care a lot about those casulties, and get pissed at them as a result, which is refreshing in this day and age, compared the toothlessness of something like The Avengers when it comes to that subject, or the utter abandon something like Man Of Steel treated it. So yeah, still kind of a mixed bag, but it had some good aspects to it.

It is a film with hundreds of flaws. Still, I enjoyed seeing it in 3D. Not so much when I watched it in 2D four years ago. In 2D it is nothing but gun-porn. In 3D it looks interesting.

That's about all I can do to analyze it. Your analysis is quite good, and spot on, Stu.

3D certainly enhances the experience. Like I havent watched the Owls of Gahoole again because it was breathtaking in 3D. But I dont think that'd translate well into 2D.

The only 3D film I have watched so far where 3D didn't enhance the experience has been Clash of the Titans (the remake) because the 3D conversion is crap.

Bringing up the conv word, I have to say that most of the conversions I have watched so far are pretty well-done.

Hugo is quite interesting in 2D. I saw it that way the first two times. But you're right, 3D just makes it snap. And you notice a lot of different items that catch the eye in 3D than those that catch the eye in 2D. Mind you, all I've done is audit the disk, watching a portion at the beginning of each chapter. But I plan to savor it in full soon.

Scorsese shot it in 3D. So I'd like to think that's how he wanted people to experience it. But also I think he also has the right mind to think of his shots for 3D AND 2D.

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

True. I can't think of anything that I recall seeing in the 2D viewing that seemed somehow mis-composed. Scorsese and his cinematographer, Robert Richardson, must have the ability to compose in both phenomena at once. Of course, basically, it just takes closing one eye! When I was shooting videos I'd often close one eye while scouting my locations to see how it would look on my TV monitor, later.

I think if a shot is composed well for 2D it should look good in 3D. I often see pictures that I'd like to snap, but then realize that without the 3D phenomenon, half of what fascinates me about the view would be lost to flatness. It takes work and experimentation to find a way to frame a 2D shot to emphasize the 3D-nature of the subject. And some photographers are good at doing that. It's the phenomenon of seemingly rendering a 2D image into transient 3D that makes moving camera shots so valuable to cinema, I think. But with stills, you lose that aspect, and have to rely on light and composition.

Working through the 60 3D films I have. Tonight John Carter in 3D. Saw it in 2012 in a 2D theater, and again in 2015 from a Blu-ray. The 3D effect is well-done. I can't remember at the moment if it was shot in 3D or converted.

In 2D I saw A Monster Calls (2016) from a Flix DVD,and immediately ordered the Blu-ray from Amazon. It's not a 3D film. A tear-jerker, though. But unusual in many ways. I liked it although I didn't find it to be a happy film. It's a fantasy with a somehow human scale to it. I'd like to read the book and see if it has the same aspect.

Someone else here has seen the film, but Trends gives us no clue who our fellow watchers might be.

Gamer, Kong Skull Island and Pacific Rim are all greatly more enjoyable with the dimensional effect!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 was an excellent diversion. Silly, but filled with all kinds of jokes that kids would never get, and had me laughing out loud.

In fact, all the 3D animated films I've seen with the dimensional effect are much better than without. Including the first two Toy Story movies. I'm still saving # 3 for watching on the right day.

Oh, I've seen 36 of the 60 3D BD's I have. So there's some good watching to go. Or to come. However you'd say that.

Indeed. The 3D adds a lot to the scenes where Pi is floating on the sea, doesn't it? I bought Life of Pi with the 3D version two years before I got a 3D TV, because I knew I wanted to see it in 3D again some day, and it would no longer be in theaters. I guess it's obvious that my first viewing was at a Real-D theater.

I haven't re-watched the entire film since I got the new television. Sort of saving it for a good day, too! And I have seen the Blu-ray with the 2D version. It lacks a certain something that is there in 3D. It's still a good story, but as a movie it's quite different.

Have you seen it in 2D, or only in 3D?

Well, as I keep typing ad nauseum, I haven't seen many films that aren't improved by the 3D effect. So when you get to Kubo 3D, expect it to be a good experience. That's another of the eight 3D films I acquired before I got a 3D television.

I've seen it in both 2D and 3D. I think it looks a bit better in 3D, but that's just my opinion. Overall, I liked the visuals more than the story, but it's still a pretty good film.

There should be used ones on the market. But how are the prices? I haven't looked at any to see. Does the manufacturers dumping out of making new ones cause the prices of used 3D TVs to be too high? Or can you get some dealz?

Nah. It's caused the prices to skyrocket. The LG C6 the last 3D TV LG made still won't drop down from below 2k. And that model is over a year old.

Wow. So there is enough demand to keep used item prices high, but not enough for the TV makers to continue with 3D models.

I can't figure out capitalism.

For the bulk of my years I've watched as an item would be brought on the market, I'd adopt it, sometimes with enthusiasm, only to have it discontinued because not enough people wanted one. Or I'd watch as TV shows I really enjoyed would get canceled because not enough people were interested in watching them.

Yep. They gave the 3D the big push and when people are starting to adopt it a bit more they yank it cuz now 4k is the big thing. :/

If only capitalism were mature enough to support two or three big things simultaneously.

Hah. I think people just didnt take to the big push. It's not like 4k where it was gradually shown to us and then sold. Also people don't like wearing glasses?

Maybe, but they flock to theaters where they have to wear the same glasses.

Maybe it was the active shutter glasses, which I avoided. When a passive TV capable of 1080p resolution in 3D mode came out I wanted one, but couldn't afford it.

Finally, I bought the 4K OLED because it seemed to be the lowest priced one left with passive 3D, and I still couldn't really afford it. Ha ha!

But the passive glasses, an awful lot of people wear them in theaters.

Are fewer theatrical releases in 3D nowadays? Have you read about that?

The Amazing Spider-man 2 3D was on sale for ten bucks. It will arrive tomorrow. I have the 4K version and regular HD already.

I can't recall whether I saw it in the theater. I don't recall seeing it in 3D. I might have streamed it from Netflix. But I have already seen the film. It's a 3D conversion, but a lot of conversions are well-done these days.

I remember being impressed by the 3D effects of Cameron's Avatar when it was first released. However, my amazement has lessened over time. As of now, I think Gravity has the most beautiful 3D effects.

I think web Switched over to shooting on film for the sequel. And it shows as the colors just "pop" in the sequel. Compared to the more subdued colors of the first one.

I would hope that 3D effects would add a lot to Gravity, because it wasn't all that impressive in 2D. I'd like to see it in 3D, but I'll have to wait until the price gets low enough for my budget. Then I'll snap it up and find out!

I'm looking forward to corroborating Ace's opinion of the look of Amazing Spiderman 2. (I guess I could do that with the 4K disc, but I prefer 3D over 4K so far. Maybe I'll like 4K better when I grow up.)

I bought the Passengers box with 4K, 3D, 2D and digital. Watched 4K first, then 3D. I enjoyed it more with the dimensional effect.

But when I was a kid I went nuts for ViewMaster. Maybe I've just always been a 3D addict. :-|

I think Amazing is a TRUE 4k movie in that it was actually mastered in 4k. I actually own Gravity in 3D. I wanted the Diamond Luxe edition tho. That one one the silent space version.

Spiderman Homecoming 3D came today.

I haven't watched the 3D disc yet, but looked in on the features on the 2D disc.

Then I decided to get the digital copy registered. And it has so many hoops to leap through. So, this time, if I cannot use the code on the sheet at VUDU without having to go to sony pictures and then sign in to my account with Ultraviolet, when I already have a link to the Ultraviolet account at VUDU, then I don't want the digital copy. I already paid the money for it, but commercial outfits seem to relish making things just one or two steps beyond reasonable these days.

*clock ticks*

Okay the code worked directly at VUDU, after all. I'm in. I now have 110 VUDU movies. I have watched only one of them, and that's an old film I bought directly from VUDU. But I keep registering all the digital copies because...no reason. :D

Have you signed up for www.moviesanywhere.com
It makes redeeming the Digitial copy codes easier. + they give 5 free movies for linking to your services. It's kinda nice having your Digital copies across many services.

I was pleasantly surprised by that one; even though Spider-Man 2 is one of my favorite superhero films, I've grown out of the rest of the original Raimi trilogy over the years, and I didn't even bother finishing any of the Amazings (I watched maybe 15-30 minutes of the second one, then lost interest), so I didn't have high hopes for Homecoming. Still, Marvel managed to find a way to make it a fun & lively watch, and brought Peter back down to earth as an in-over-his-head high schooler who just so happens to be a Marvel hero, with just enough substance to it to prevent it from turning into complete fluff in the end. So, it was definitely a pleasant surprise for me.

Stan Lee says, in one of the features, that Tom Holland is just like he imagined Peter Parker when he invented Spider Man. I can believe this because when I was a kid reading the original Spider Man comics, the way I imagined the character was in fact just like Tom Holland plays him in that there movie.

No Spider Man actor I have ever seen or heard before (TV cartoons, Rami, even Amazing Spiderman) played the character to so closely fit my teenage imagination. So when I went to see the new film in July I was astounded, and knew I had to buy the 3D disc as soon as it was available. It was the earliest pre-order I've ever placed. But how many times can this actor play Peter before he's too old?

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

This was supposed to go into another thread, but I put it here by mistake. Decided to leave it after copying the contents to the proper thread.

Lore (2017) was a Saturday-evening binge-watch. It's an Amazon series with 6 episodes. Four of the episodes are mostly cool dramatizations of bizarre events from the past. Ep 1 offers an obscure fact: that the newspaper reports of the incidents reported in the episode went world-wide, and Brahm Stoker had a clipping of one such article in his materials that led him to write Dracula. But, generally, as the episodes get higher in number, the less factual they are and the more speculative they become. You can find little to believe in the other two episodes.

IMDb Synopsis wrote:
Blending dramatic scenes, animation, archive and narration, Lore reveals how our horror legends - such as vampires, werewolves and body snatchers - are rooted in truth.
"Rooted" is the key word, here. And it is interesting to see the stories. One reviewer bemoaned the narration that breaks up the dramatizations within the episodes, but that's a matter of personal taste. I found nothing off-putting about any of the structure of the series. This is the difference between a dramatic series like The Twilight Zone and a documentary series such as Lore. The doc tends to want to ground the story in reality whereas the drama wants to just chill your bones. Lore does both in several places.

I find episode 6 to be beyond belief. But it serves as a source for creepy doll dramas like Devil Doll (1964) and the TZ episode "Living Doll" with the little Talking Tina doll that kills daddy, as well as the Chucky series. I think some people were creeped out by dolls and by ventriloquist's dummies long before the early 20th century, though.

If you own a Prime account, Lore streams as part of Amazon Prime.

Yup, Holland was definitely a good Parker in it. As for the worries about his longevity in the role, if he starts seeming too old to convincingly play a high-schooler, I imagine Marvel will just do what Sony did with their various incarnations of the character, like move him onto college, then to a full-grown adult, etc.; I heard they're planning on positioning Spidey as the next lead of The Avengers (and hence, the overall Marvelverse as a whole) since RDJ isn't planning on renewing his contract with them again, so if they can squeeze about a a decade-plus worth of films out his character like they've done with Downey's Iron Man, I'd say they should consider themselves lucky.

Anyway, another thing I enjoyed about Homecoming is how down-to-earth they kept Peter this time around, setting a lot of his fights with evildoers in smaller-scale settings, like the fight inside the small ATM branch, or the little chase through the sleepy little nighttime suburb, or the fight in the school bus parking lot; in all of Sony's Spider-Mans, Spidey was the only superhero in town (or the entire world, for that matter), so they always had to go big with their scope, and also try to cram in multiple villains to fight, often to those films' detriments. Homecoming, on the other hand, managed to distinguish itself by keeping Peter as one small fish in the big Marvel pond, while also giving us a better sense of how living in a world full of superheros has affected the day-to-day life and culture of the everyday world (like those hilarious Captain America PSAs they had to watch at Peter's school), so that was an aspect of the film that I definitely appreciated.

I have often thought that it would be interesting for Parker to become middle aged or even slightly past that point, and still be trying to be Spider Man. I think DC has done that with Bruce Wayne and his alter ego. Maybe Marvel has done that -- "Aging Avengers" or some such and I haven't heard about it. And of course the aging Spider Man would want a protege, although that person wouldn't have to be either male or have spider powers. But you can easily imagine the interesting tales they could come up with if he tried to make a younger spidey out of a kid, right?
