Judging by the Ron Howard-esque trailer the new Steven Spielberg film The Post looks mighty meh. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep star.

Perhaps, but it's holding a strong average score of an 8 back at The Other Place, which is almost the only thing that really matters to me when deciding whether or not I wanna see a movie, so if it comes to my area, I imagine I'm likely to check it out regardless.

Robert Rodriguez has made some great stuff. And look at that cast.
Eh, I thought that trailer was just okay, with a couple of head-slap worthy lines ("The strong prey on the weak down here"...?), and, it is another Hollywood attempt at adapting anime, something that we all know they haven't had the best track record with. I don't mean to sound pessimistic on it, I just really want this Battle Angel to live up to its full potential, is all.

The only thing I can pin on the design decision is that it's a thing in manga and anime for the protagonist to be "overworked" compared to the rest of the cast. Big hair, bigger eyes, generally meant to be the point of focus in a frame while the rest of the cast is more tame in comparison. Alita, in the manga, does have big eyes relative to the rest of the cast, but this seems to be a design decision lost in translation because there is no mention of her eyes in the manga. They are being too literal with the page to screen translation. Here you just want to look away while in the manga she is meant to pop off of the page
This might ease your concerns about Alita's eyes, Nameless:

Good to see that Maisie Williams is branching out beyond Game of Thrones. Can't wait.

I assume you're talking about The New Mutants?:

This is looks like it could go either way between obnoxious, sci-fi horror schlock (the February release doesn't help), or really fucking freaky and cool. It is from the guy who did Ex Machina, so I'll give it the bene of the doubt and wait and see.

This looks like a hard movie to market but February is a new hot zone thanks to Deadpool. The whole fantasy land horror angle looks really cool, I like that Hollywood is getting brave with it's colours and whatnot because Garland is good at injecting his screenplays with trippy moments of serenity (see, Dredd)

February is shaping up nicely between Black Panther and the next Cloverfield universe movie. March, as well, with Pacific Rim 2 and the orgasmic-looking Ready Player One.

Alita: Battle Angel looks like next year's equivalent to Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, in that some very promising source material has a committed director and impressive (if somewhat obvious as far as CGI is concerned) visuals and a potentially messy script. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.

Annihilation is probably my first anticipated film of 2018. Still haven't gotten around to seeing Ex Machina yet though. Hopefully I rectify that soon.

Neeson is the reason for the season: 19 movies coming this January

Believe it or not, not every release this month looks like complete and utter shite...

Interestingly, the most intriguing items on the list are Netflix debuts, rather than theatrical releases.

I can't wait to see the National Lampoon film. Although I'd prefer Andy Samberg playing Chevy (maybe he's too short?).

Pretty much, it seems; Kevin Feige keeps claiming that Marvel's "committed" to an eventual BW movie, but it's been 8 years since she was introduced into the MCU, and still no concrete plans for it :( Meanwhile, the DCEU, of all franchises, beats them to the punch with Wonder Woman... *shake head* Anyway, I'm not sure if I think this looks good or not (and its director has had a bit of a mixed career so far), but I'm willing to give it a chance if the reviews are strong enough this March.

I've thought about it.

I don't think that Quentin Tarantino has the emotional maturity to handle the Manson murders material.

Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman eh? I'm not so sure about that one. We'rent they dating at one time anyways? Maybe it's the rantings of a jealous ex who has a very little career these days and isn't in the spotlight. Quentin on the other hand is still riding high and mighty.

As far as Quentin doing a 1969 Manson themed film I think he'll pull it off as well as his other films. It's his immaturity and baby-like awe at cinema (I've watched a bunch of interviews on Youtube today and he really is like a kid in a candy store) and he's still the same old Tarantino in the newer interviews. Personally the thought of a Tarantino/Manson film excites me but not as much as him directing an R-Rated (his words) Star Trek film. That will be really killer. Especially since his biggest influence in that regard is the original Star Trek series and how he said his film would more resemble those episodes.

Big deal. Directors manipulating actors and hurting them is nothing new. You should hear Ellen Burstyn on the filming of The Exorcist. She almost broke her neck filming one scene and it was blamed on the director. Wake up and smell some coffee and learn a little bit about the film business. For all we know Uma wanted to do her own stunts and film everything. Let's hear Quentin's side of the story before making stern allegations.

Post Re: Upcoming Films Worth Knowing About

I know a lot of people are saying that's overkill. and it may turn out that way. but I can't fault Disney for seeing an appetite for more movies when there's so many expanded universe novels, comic books, video games, etc. out there already making money. and if they ever stopped making movies, it's always possible that more EU stuff would cultivate a nascent fanbase, and that plus remnants of the old fanbase would generate more interest leading to another spate of movies.

product begets product. such is Hollywood and fandom culture.

maybe I need to resign from it all. like, completely.

EDIT: hahahahaha, it's not stopping. well, I just hope the kids like it I guess.

I'd love to see them do a proper Dr. Doom movie. No one has gotten his origin correct yet. Besides being one of the world's foremost roboticists and inventors, he also dabbles in black magic. The whole reason his face was scarred in a collegic experiment was due to his trying to open a portal to Hell (or the nearest convenient parallel dimension) to rescue his mother, who was a witch.

With the success of R-rated movies like Deadpool and Logan, plus the upcoming horror-driven New Mutants, I'm hoping they finally take a chance and get it right this time.
