March Project: Frank Borzage
Image

Borzage will go down as the first person to ever win the Oscar for Best Director. Yet, few film fans would actively recognize his name, despite the fact that he has more than 100 films to his credit between the early parts of the 1910s into the late 1950s. He worked primarily within melodrama, and perhaps that is why he does not have an enduring reputation. His work is sentimental, romantic and fantastic... however, his characters often lived in abject poverty, and he did not neglect to show the hardships of their lifestyle, and the almost cyclical nature of their unfortunate lives.

His style is inspired greatly by F.W. Murnau, who he briefly worked with in the 1920s at Fox studios. His filmmaking took on a life of it's own though, and it can hardly be called derivative. Looking back at the Classical Hollywood era, he had one of the strongest cinematic "voices", that was nary compromised through the entire length of his career. He worked with a great number of extremely talented actors, and was especially notable for the strong female performances he inspired in his actresses.

Already seen
A Farewell to Arms (1932)
Man's Castle (1933)
History is Made at Night (1937)

Goal
To see at least FIVE new Borzage films over the course of the month

Highest Priority
The River (1929)
Till we Meet Again (1944)
Lucky Star (1929)
Little Man What Now? (1934)
Big City (1937)
Strange Cargo (1940)
The Mortal Storm (1940)

Ann-Margaret!

Seventh Heaven is one of the best movies I've seen. Screened it in a theater with live Wurlitzer playing, so that may have skewed my reaction. Janet Gaynor reduced me to tears several times, therefore I can confirm what you're saying about Borzage's skilled use of actresses, Rouge.

I do want to see Moonrise, it's the lack of familiar actors that throws me off. I'm shallow like that.

The font is actually Green Pillow

The lack of familiar actors is a strong point of the film.

This is a happy coincidence; my film class this semester is all Borzage (tonight we watch The Mortal Storm).

I do agree that he is one of the few true auteurs of Hollywood's Golden Age and I appreciate his direct, uncompromised emotion (even if it can be disarming). I'd strongly recommend Lazybones if you can get your hands on it. We also watched his adaptation of Liliom, which was fascinating, though I wouldn't call it "good".

I didn't care for Liliom at all. Charles Farrell was terrible in it and if I hadn't seen Seventh Heaven before, I'd swear he couldn't act.

I will check out Lazybones, thanks for the tip.

I'll defend some of Liliom's imagery. But yeah, Farrell was horribly miscast, at least compared to his work in other Borzage films.

The Mortal Storm was good, if "un-Borzage". I'll share more thoughts once Rouge has seen it.

When I saw the name 'Borzage', I started thinking of Stan Brakhage, which kind of gave me the wrong idea slightly. I haven't seen any films from either Brakhage or, more to the point, Borzage. But it's Rouge, so I'm here anyway.

I should hopefully be watching my first Borzage this weekend. I've been a bit busy with school, which happens to involve watching other films as priority. Unforrtunately.
