Post Roger Ebert is an inspiration - clips from Oprah interview

I watched these clips from his interview on Oprah yesterday and by the end I was in tears. Ebert and his wife Chaz have such an unconditional, respectful, loving relationship.

I cried not only because I feel compassion and admiration for Ebert, but also because I do not conceivably see myself ever having such a pure relationship. What about you? Do you think your partner (or future partner) would stick by you like this? Are you un-vain enough to love yourself after your appearance is completely altered and physical voice is taken away?

I don't know. I'm not as accomplished as Ebert. There's less reason to stick with me. But at that age, maybe.

So you think age and success has everything to do with it? I agree to a certain extent. But...

I'm just looking at possible factors.

If I were in her situation I don't see why I would leave.

I got teary-eyed when I saw his wife's reaction to his new voice. I do wish I can one day find someone that will stick with me through the hard times, not matter how bad they get, and I do hope that I could do the same in return.

For one, it would be cruel. When something like this happens people feel obligated to stand by their partner. Chaz seems to be extra-equipped at not letting this ruin the connection that they have and vice versa.

I seriously question whether I am cut out for a real marriage based on all the "right" values like Roger/Chaz. I have never truly felt that an unconditional friendship type of love was within the realm of possibly for me.

Anyway, Oprah and Ebert used to date! Didn't know that until those clips.

I like Ebert. Always have, always will. But I can't stand Oprah.

I'm neutral to positive on my perception of O. She does do some good things with some of her money and seems like a decent person. I don't watch her show, read her publications or follow her cult though.

I know she does. I think its more that I'm mad at her for forcing crappy Dr. Phil upon the world, plus the fact that house wives really pay way too much attention to what she says. 'Course that isn't really her fault, though.

Has actual love become such a rare commodity that those who express it are some sort of revolutionary pioneers? My wife would do this for me and I would do it for her, no question about it.

Yeah this. I watched the videos and was like, so? I would do what she does without thinking about it.

Mainly I posted it to show what a positive guy Ebert is. It would suck to lose your voice, never be able to eat or drink again, and look deformed.

The love thing is another issue. That's wonderful that you are in such loving relationships.
