Dangerously Excited
Koo Ja-Hong
South Korea, 2011

I don't know that this exactly as arthouse-y as we've been doing for these trips, but I saw the trailer for this at a film festival here a couple years ago and really wanted to see it. Let me know if my dropbox is fucked up, I've never done one before. xoxo -wig

Dae-Hee (Yoon Je-Moon) is a low level city government employee in the Mapo district of Seoul. His department handles various issues like trash, noise, and public safety. Dae-Hee isn't married, nor does he have a girlfriend at the moment. He also doesn't have many hobbies. Dae-Hee enjoys memorizing facts from books to impress his colleagues and watching television until falling asleep. You can say he is conservative and his job at the city government office suits him well. Within the Mapo district lies the Hongdae area famous for the thriving indie rock music scene. Dae-Hee leaves with a co-worker to talk with a band who has received numerous complaints from neighbors about loud noise in a residential neighborhood. The band is practicing for their next album which is coming out in the upcoming days. They are disheartened when Dae-Hee and his co-worker informs them they have to stop playing in their rented basement. During their talk, a man comes by and offers the band to rent his attic room for a generous price. Dae-hee and his co-worker knows something is fishy, but just go about their business. The next day, the band discovers their musical instruments and rent money stolen by the con man who offered to rent his apartment. Meanwhile, they become angry at civil worker Dae-Hee who introduced them to the con man. They go visit Dae-Hee at his office. To avoid a scene in front of his boss, Dae-Hee quickly offers the band his basement for their practice sessions. Dae-Hee seems to have little interest in music or the kids. Yet, days later when 2 members quit the band, Dae-Hee is recruited to join the band as their bassist...

Well, maybe it is the Linda Linda Office Drone that I wanted it to be and that's just not as interesting as teen girls rocking and being pals. I def liked it but the stuff I wanted most didn't happen for like an hour and before that it sorta bounced around between a weirdly specific social commentary that completely lost me and some lowkey characterizationing things which weren't bad but weren't terribly endearing either. I liked their song they made up. I liked the girls in the band, they were cool. I want one of those decibel devices they have in the beginning. I liked that they have to abandon their spreadsheets to shovel snow. I liked it.

      Water bill receipts...
Three legs in an order of chicken!

I liked the goofy main character. He was so happy with his TV shows and his PowerPoint, it's almost a shame the plot had to interfere. But, then, I guess he was pretty content at the end, too. I felt there was untapped comic potential in both band and office. Things like the horrible lyrics and the office drone wars were dropped too soon. But, all in all, this was pretty fun. Korean Bob Dylan was really weird, though.

meh. this was inoffensive but not really inspired at all, the levity was all tv movie stuff and there's no time devoted to getting to know the band, understanding the main character's place in this network or understanding the importance of music in their lives (which differentiates it from Linda Linda Linda, which wig compared it to and which uses music and a band comp less as a signpost for 'personal triumph' than as a catalyst for a deeper, richer and more complex exploration of coming-of-age, becoming of self and the evanescence of triumph itself). no one is allowed to simply 'behave' and let character develop, they have to Deliver Lines and Complete Punchlines and blahblahblah, so nothing ever felt real enough to generate actual catharsis for me. what bugged me the most were the weird attemps at spicing up the aesthetic - the slow-motion, the weird black-and-white sequence etc. i'll give it some points for the first 3 minutes and the final 3 minutes, which are nice, satisfying and sensitive, the "music is cheap and nice" line which was clever and sweet and the on-point performance of the lead actor who kind of deserved a better vehicle

Yeah, the young actors were weak, but the lead was quite good. Catharsis is a rare gift, and definitely not something I expect in every film.

So, can anyone explain this?

yeah, this film clearly expects you to expect it, though. what would the point be of a battle-of-the-bands film otherwise?

But they even talk about it being a very minor event, something they wouldn't have wasted time on in the past. I think the point is merely that they're still together, still trying. A very small victory.
