One last image from Rai, again featuring a tree, but this one is not part of his Trees series. Yet it speaks to how unassumingly pervasive trees are in our world, and how simply drawing attention to them makes a series like Trees so distinctive.

Kubrick needs no introduction, but he worked as a photographer before transitioning into filmmaking. Only a few of his photographs stand out, but I like this one for its sense of depth, and as an informal artifact of time and place.

Eli Reed. Ghana. Former President Jimmy Carter in the village of Danchira. 1989.

.

There is something remarkably democratic in the photograph. Unlike narrative art forms, documentary photography captures everything anonymously. There are no stars or extras. Sometimes one figure might dominate the frame, but still we know nothing about them. This restraint leaves us ignorant of some things, like their names and feelings and histories, but it creates an egalitarian experience. Photographers leave us to sort out the details. On occasion a photograph might contain someone we recognize -- either a personal acquaintance or a famous figure, like President Carter in this picture -- but these are the exception when it comes to documentary photography, and our recognition is guided by our knowledge. If someone who saw this picture did not know who Jimmy Carter was, he would not stand out any more than the anonymous girl meeting the camera's gaze.

I was watching a live broadcast of that launch on TV the morning it happened. We were watching at home, because I was only 5, and not in school yet. And it wasn't the last broadcast blow-up of a rocket. When I was in school starting the next year we saw another one blow up one morning.

Tiny me was torn between thinking that the fireball looked cool and that a rocket blowing up during take-off wasn't a good thing. Ha ha!

Don Hong-Oai created his pictorialist aesthetic (in the tradition of traditional Chinese painting) by combining elements from two separate photographs: the objects that appear prominently in the foreground are edited into the landscapes.

(The background in this one appears to have been taken on the Li River, which I traveled down while visiting China.)

This guy is a more formal, not as gauche version of Jerry Uelsmann (who I think you posted at least one work by).

I think I prefer Don Hong-Oai.

Don Hong-Oai was definitely going for a more seamless effect. Uelsmann (you're right, I think I posted two by him) draws more attention to his photo-manipulation.

I read the link about his life and technique, but it doesn't tell how he did these amazing montages. I've read one or two of Uelsmann's essays on how he does what he does. Don's work is seamless, as you say, but I cannot figure out how he would accomplish his work. It's so beautiful, and pre-Photoshop that kind of dodging, burning, overprinting, and so forth was very difficult. I only tried one, it was too much work for 16-year old impatient me, and never tried another. Of course, I had to use a friend's darkroom that his father had set up in their attic, so there wasn't a lot of temperature control. And I was a neophyte. Remained one due to lack of patience, probably.

And Don's simple-seeming works are far more complex than what I was attempting.

Thank the stars for Photoshop!

As for Don Hong-Oai's works, I am totally in love with them, and totally blown away. (Glad you got around to posting these, Macro!)

Perhaps. I think Moholy-Nagy was more interested in pure geometry than he was in color or texture, and the snow emphasizes the geometry of the shot through sheer contrast.

True. That's another good way of looking at the picture. In terms of photography, however, I'm into geometry and color.

Do you tend to avoid black & white films? And, if so, do you also tend to shy away from b&w stills?
