Post Re: Learning to See

Instead of posting a traditional photographer today, I'd like to share this blog: http://9-eyes.com

Image

It's a collection of pictures found on Google Maps Street View, taken automatically by the street view car camera and assembled by Jon Rafman. I've selected 10 images here, but the blog is well worth perusing in more depth.

Image

The images run the gamut, from amusing to dramatic, from bizarre to sublime. They capture crimes, doppelgangers, children at play, car accidents, beautiful vistas. A few exhibit the compositional intelligence and emotional impact you only expect from a professional street photographer. It proves the "monkeys on typewriters" thesis: with enough random input, something remarkable will happen eventually.

Image

What interests me most about this project, though, goes beyond the individual photographs that Rafman has collected. It has recontextualized the way I perceive Google Maps (and namely its street view function). Rather than merely serving as a utilitarian tool, it is a collage of the world as seen from our streets, and not just a collage of the world as it was at a particular moment, but a montage through time as well. Of course most of Google street view is totally banal because everyday life is pedestrian, but these places and moments emerge like a side-effect of this technology we're using, and they speak to the quiet ubiquity of beauty in this world, waiting to rise to the surface.

Image

Amusing story starters someone thought up to accompany a few of the images.

Image

Image

In the style of Joel Sternfeld.

I recall reading in Photography magazine in the late 1960s that shooting a lot of frames is the best way to get a great photograph.

I could never afford that. One of my college buds took a photography course, and the teacher gave them the same advice. His dad was wealthier. But I think it takes an eye first of all. I guess in this case the eye comes second. ;)

That website also reminds me of a video-editing phenomenon humorously called the Law of Random Sync. If you edit motion pictures together and then play pre-recorded music to the already edited images, you will see many instances where it looks like you cut to the music on purpose. That's not only the cuts or dissolves that you use for scene transitions, but the motion within the frame will often synchronize with the music as well.

Have any of the rest of you run across Random Sync?

He actually explains in the interview I posted (albeit reluctantly -- he tells the interviewer that he generally prefers to keep the context behind his photos a mystery). It's apparently a guy sunbathing on the roof of the car; I suspect the initial ambiguity is part of what appealed to him.

Oh, that makes sense; the seeming proportions of it in that shot made me think it was some sort of odd parade float, like that giant David Hasselhoff prop they made for the Spongebob Squarepants movie, haha.

I wonder, when was this picture taken? I ask because, if it's pre-1991-ish, then I can't help but wonder if Duncan Fegredo took some inspiration from its wandering figures walking in the snow and fog next to a looming, monolithic structure when he was drawing the cover to Darkthrone's debut record Soulside Journey...
