Also, great contrast between the last two photos.

One fantastic image after another.

It depresses me how unbelievably ignorant I am towards photography as an art. I could have probably named five photographers before this thread and not cared that I didn't know anymore. I'm repenting as we speak.

Now I just need a thread to lay out plainly to me why the stage isn't totally second rate.

I would try, but I'm not sure a thread is the ideal medium for expounding on the merits of stagecraft.

Post Re: Learning to See

Of course! Glad to be of service.

I think part of the reason that last photograph struck me so much is that it reminds me of one of my favorite paintings, Gustave Caillebotte's Les Raboteurs de parquet:

Image

They have a lot in common, namely the unassuming beauty of the scenes, especially the emphasis on the play of light on reflective surfaces, and the elevation of working class drudgery to a sublime state. And while Caillebotte's use of perspective is riveting, Weiss's uncanny symmetry has an unusual vigor to it as well.

Pretty strong feeling of isolation. I also like how the man is off center. I've seen a few photos in this thread which used that technique to great effect.

Wylie's most interesting work is his series, which often feel more like catalogs of space and architecture than photojournalism, à la Bernd and Hilla Becher. They generally focus on systemic repetition and the artifacts of oppression.

Wylie's series on the Maze Prison complex explores banality, repetition, sterility, and emptiness. Much of it is a subtle comment on the oppressive British presence in Ireland. There is a thoroughness to the Maze series that is downright exhaustive, as if he wanted to document every square inch of the place.

Wylie on Maze and his influences:
