Post Re: Learning to See

.

Ernst Haas. Vienna. 1945.

.

Ernst Haas wrote:
I looked at an apple for such a long time until it became the first apple I had ever seen. I was so excited that I called a friend to tell him my experience. But how could I find the right words for what I had experienced? How could I describe my visual sensations with such literary words as red, yellow, green, shining, round? After this movement of nuances and counteractions in form and color, even in touch and smell.

Anyhow, I did not find the right words, and my friend did not believe me. So, I ate the apple, as I have eaten many an apple before. It was a fairly good apple. I called my friend again, telling him I just ate a fairly good apple, and he understood me immediately.

Conclusion: in visions we are alone, in taste we can be together. All I try is to find my inside images in the outside reality. A picture can be an answer as well as a question but if you can’t answer your question try to question your question. There are clever questions and stupid answers as well as stupid questions and clever answers. There can be questions without answers but no answers without questions. To be or not to be—that is a question. To see or not to see—that is an answer.

Ernst Haas. New Orleans. 1960.

There's a strange interplay between the childlike and the adult in this photograph: the girl appears to be wearing a schoolgirl outfit, but she's drinking a beer and hanging out with men who seem older than her; a balloon floats playfully by, but its bright yellow draws your attention to the space between the girl's legs.

Well, his pictures are staged, so more like carefully executed timing on taking a picture of such an unfortunate incident. And even then, I suspect it's a photomontage; Wall does those sometimes. In fact the one I'm posting later tonight uses photomontage.

Jeff Wall. After ‘Invisible Man’ by Ralph Ellison, the Prologue. 1999-2000.

.

Quote:
My hole is warm and full of light. Yes, full of light. I doubt if there is a brighter spot in all New York than this hole of mine, and I do not exclude Broadway. Or the Empire State Building on a photographer's dream night. But that is taking advantage of you. Those two spots are among the darkest of our whole civilization -- pardon me, our whole culture (an important distinction, I've heard) -- which might sound like a hoax, or a contradiction, but that (by contradiction, I mean) is how the world moves: Not like an arrow, but a boomerang. (Beware of those who speak of the spiral of history; they are preparing a boomerang. Keep a steel helmet handy.) I know; I have been boomeranged across my head so much that I now can see the darkness of lightness. And I love light. Perhaps you'll think it strange that an invisible man should need light, desire light, love light. But maybe it is exactly because I am invisible. Light confirms my reality, gives birth to my form. A beautiful girl once told me of a recurring nightmare in which she lay in the center of a large dark room and felt her face expand until it filled the whole room, becoming a formless mass while her eyes ran in bilious jelly up the chimney. And so it is with me. Without light I am not only invisible, but formless as well; and to be unaware of one's form is to live a death. I myself, after existing some twenty years, did not become alive until I discovered my invisibility.

From the prologue of Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man

Y'all get a twofer today.

I posted about Paul Fusco some time ago, but a friend recently shared this phenomenal New Yorker article with me, which discusses one of Fusco's landmark achievements, photographing people watching Robert Kennedy's funeral train. It's a stirring collection and a deeply perceptive article.

All photos taken by Paul Fusco in 1968.

(The beautiful happenstance of the images, which necessarily fall along a prescribed route, remind me of this collection of pictures culled from Google Street View as well.)
