Kander does a lot of portraiture, but his Yangtze: The Long River series is the most compelling work I've found
by him. I love how he situates the daily life of the river's inhabitants within these imposing, hazy compositions.
People are dwarfed by the looming architecture, which in turn is obscured by the ubiquitous smog. On some
level these landscapes feel threatening or alienating, but this is mitigated by the perseverance of the people,
intent on living their daily lives in spite of the pollution (in air and water) and their foreboding surroundings.

The immense architecture has a metaphorical weight, too, emblematic as it is of China's indiscriminate progress,
occasionally pursued at the expense of its citizens. Both the content and the compositions of these photographs
bring to mind Jia Zhangke's films, particularly Still Life, which deals with the construction of the Three Gorges Dam
on this very river, a project that flooded sites of cultural significance and displaced 1.3 million people.

The swimmers -- the only splash of color in the frame -- look hopeful, like kids who came out to swim
but can't get in the water until the thunder passes. They're poised at the edge of the water, clearly ready
to swim but hesitant, uncertain, likely doubting the quality of the water they'll be swimming in.

Between the intelligence of his compositions and the stark flash photography he uses (detailed in the previous article I posted), some of Majoli's photographs have the chiarascuro complexity of a Caravaggio or a Rembrandt.

Wish I had a higher res version of that one, but I can't find any online.

Also, those Tarkovsky Polaroids are phenomenal. I've seen some of his Polaroid work before, but several of those are new to me. Very few people can do what he does: rendering the ethereal concrete without betraying its ethereality.

MAC, help me out on this one.

I'm trying to find a photo... Pretty sure it's of a soul singer (thought it was Diana Ross but nothing came up) in a yellow dress standing in front of a yellow taxi. Not sure if you've posted it before or not, I've definitely seen it in different places.

Kayden - I don't know it offhand, but if something comes to mind or if I happen across it, I'll let you know. I almost certainly didn't post it, though.

Nameless - I do not. I don't even own a camera, aside from the one built into my antique iPhone 4. This is a self-education thread that I made into public sharing because why not

If you want to start a vendetta with me over my snide comment in the other thread, I guess you're welcome to, but I didn't mean personal offense toward either party. I was mostly poking fun at the obnoxious rivalry you and Mel have, which takes up more real estate here than it needs to. Can't y'all just bicker to your heart's content in your PMs?

It's driving me nuts.

I'm supposed to do photos at the Juno Awards this weekend (Canada's biggest awards for music)... and I'm not expecting to get anything decent at all. Don't think it'll be red carpet, probably just some media room Q&A stuff. Trying to find some inspiration from other award/premiere photos.
