Please join in and add your own - this is a celebration!

First up, obvious choice, but the sequence really is striking and plays the iconography for all it's got.

All I can do tonight; might add a couple more from Kong in the next few days, its visuals were big and loud and wonderful.

Image

And here's Kong doing his best center-of-frame leading-lines Wonder Woman impression. Furry boy nails it.

This thread wouldn't be complete without several Blade Runner 2049 stills (and gifs of they're eligible to be posted as well). I would focus on certain sequences but I do not own the film in a digital form.

Oh yeah, that's the stuff.

[I really do hope Deakins wins. I think the original film looks a titch better, but this flick operates almost as a series of tableau vivants, with them juicy colors and careful camera.

Not only is this a great shot, I also loved the idea that this giant engine needed to be dusted. (Shape of Water)

I think I'm the only person that liked Bokeh, but it was a pretty movie at least.

These images from the trailer really pushed my buttons, so I was a little disappointed to learn that this segment of the film was only a brief flashback. I would've preferred an entire movie's worth of this stuff.

I love this shot because Stan Uris is the same size as the Paul Bunyan statue behind him, in terms of screen size, and you see that image of earthy manliness in the background set against a boy beneath him in beige colors and withdrawn posture.

Image

And just generally the different ways they organize the children on-screen.

Image

This scene with them talking suggests Stand By Me with the background train and - to me - Fellowship of the Ring with the single-file action, but that may be a reach.

Image

And what may be a conscious nod to Ginger Snaps's similar scene.

Image

And finally the man of the hour.

I guessed the Three Billboards one before I even read that it's Three Billboards. I guess the billboards were a giveaway.

Persecution as Baptism - Scorsese bridges Christian and Buddhist ideals of mercy and suffering while subverting selfish sanctimony.

It's a TV show, but the Netflix series Dark looks better than most feature films:

Did Paul Bunyan come alive to old or young Richie? I can't quite remember.

If they do it in the second movie I hope the CGI doesn't look like shit.

Everything is decaying, from the water tower that purposely resembles Cerebro to Wolverine's body to the Professor's mind, all captured masterfully here.

Nice! Love how the curved lines in the BG makes the beam of light almost bend toward Charles.

I should really rewatch Dunkirk. Not sure if that'd be my Runner-up for Best Cinematography or The Shape of Water (I'm staying on the Deakins train all the way to March).

IT's cinematography also impressed me. I read that the cinematographer also shot a ton of Park Chan-Wook's movies, which is cool since they probably could have gotten anyone to shoot it but they went the extra mile.

Silence was also unbelievably beautiful. Too bad it had to run against La La Land.

It really is a gorgeously-shot movie, and that element unquestionably elevates the whole film, but I would pluck this shot out as among the best and a powerful image even taken out of context.
Good eye.
