Hearts and Minds (Peter Davis, 1974)

This should be available on Filmstruck.

IMDb wrote:
This film recounts the history and attitudes of the opposing sides of the Vietnam War using archival news footage as well as its own film and interviews. A key theme is how attitudes of American racism and self-righteous militarism helped create and prolong this bloody conflict. The film also endeavors to give voice to the Vietnamese people themselves as to how the war has affected them and their reasons why they fight the United States and other western powers while showing the basic humanity of the people that US propaganda tried to dismiss.

Post Re: Corrie Class Trip 3.0 #7: Hearts and Minds (Sat 03/17)

it was okay. it can't help but pale in comparison to the Ken Burns documentary but that has many obvious advantages so I won't be too harsh. if anything, H&M is a good historical artifact of the ways the artistic community were articulating their views of the war. and maybe one way is how they were too willing to paint the opposition as racist towards the Vietnamese or too stuck in a "Back-to-Back World War Champs" mindset to see clear. and it's not like there isn't some of that but I assume there were plenty who were genuinely concerned with the spread of Communism and had high ideals for the US as a global force for good, if less about Vietnam's right to self-determination (and all those indiscriminately-killed civilians).

one of the most affecting scenes was at the end with the two parents of the dead soldier, still believing in the American ideal, still believing that Nixon was a good man trying to what was right (the scene was filmed in 1973). these are people who know their faith in the country is being tested and refuse to yield because..... well, I can make my own assumptions based on what keeps me welded to my beliefs but it's still wrenching to watch.

Are you referring to his mini-series, The Civil War?

Anyways, I thought this was a decent film. It was effective as an articulation of American attitudes towards the war. In addition to that, I especially liked the interviews with the Vietnamese. It talks to civilians who are often not heard from. These were all effective moments. As Ox touched on though, by basing most of its attention on racism, I think it gives a misleading depiction of American soldiers as there were likely many more of them who had different viewpoints on the war which weren't explored in this film.

6/10

Hearts and Minds is a film about rage, whether it be about all of those it kills and maims, the soldiers whose minds it warps and the countries that manipulate its populace towards death and acts of brutality. I think there is an incorrect assumption that all documentaries should be measured or fair and balanced. Hearts and Minds obviously has an agenda, and it shouldn't be used as the only source in shaping ones views on the Vietnam War (or wars in general). It instead is a movie that in primarily focused on the feelings that were passionately and almost hopelessly anti-war at that time in America. Introducing elements such as the nobility of some soldiers or more rationalized reasoning for what America was doing there in the first place, would only serve to dilute the actual purpose of the film.

9/10

I liked it quite a bit. I knew going in that it wasn't going to be a balanced, but I think the movie works on how strongly it evokes the feelings of anger and sorrow and disillusionment it explores in regards to the war. I think the editing sometimes undermines the effect by opting for easy ironies (or at least going about it too bluntly), but the strength of the footage saves the movie. Made on the tail end of the war, there's a weariness to it that I think a movie with more distance from the events would have trouble achieving. In that respect, I think it might make an interesting pairing with In the Year of the Pig from 1969, which is more concerned with forming a logical argument against the war than in exploring feelings, but plays with palpable urgency no doubt helped by when it was made.

Is this an opportunity to force others to jump into the trash with me? Or am I expected to clean myself up for the occasion? Because one of these things sounds considerably more fun to me than the other.

You can pick whichever movie you want, even if you don't expect many of us to hold it in high regard. So, would you like to pick the next topic?

I trust your taste in schlock.

also, I'm gonna give Hearts and Minds another shot when I can, now that I'll know what to expect. you're probably right that I shouldn't give it too much flak for expressing a clear bias anymore than I would a fiction movie like Coming Home. everything's gotta have a story.

Don't forget it has to be available to those of us outside of the Canadian VHS-rental community. :P

I agree that we should watch this together, and use the class trip thread to live blog it. Last night probably would have been ideal, but if we can get everyone together this evening, I'll be down for that.

I am going to be out of town for work for the next few days so the earliest I will be able to do is Thursday. Other than this, it doesn't matter to me much what date to set it for.

So I have returned home and can do this anytime now. I already watched it, but I heard some talk about a live viewing between posters, and if that is still of any interest, I would always be willing to watch it again just for the occasion. What days work for everyone?

I'm new here, but nothing would please me more than for this to be some Good Friday viewing.
