I don't mind the Guitar Hero part so much, although I'm really bad at it. It's the nightmare sequences that bug me. I really don't see the point, and they're always the same thing every time. Other than that, I'm enjoying myself. I like how the player isn't always offered the choice to smooth things out when things get rough. There's a part in the game where you're talking to Bea after she's had a tough day, and I'm fairly certain that you have no choice but to piss her off. I like that. It feels more true to life than what most games offer in terms of choice.

Re: The Video Game Thread
I wouldn't mind them if the screen didn't shake terribly every time you miss a single input, the input shake makes me just want to put down the controller and say 'well, OK then, fuck it' because you end up missing like, 6 inputs because you missed one. I'm still too early for the nightmare sequences I think. The writing in it is absolutely fantastic, no doubt about that.

I still can't believe the Switch is coming out on Friday and hardly anyone is even able to get it. I have zero interest in playing BotW on Wii-U, since it looks like shit and runs like shit, but apparently Nintendo doesn't want my money.

At least Torment is out on Tuesday, I guess
You'd best believe I'm playing it on Wii U. I'm not about to fork over $400+ for one game that I can play on a console I already own.

With the new Torment nearly here, I figured I should try Planescape. Any recommended builds? I'm told you can talk to everything, definitely want to do that.
The fighting system sucks, as Chris Avellone himself has pointed out, so unless you want to bored out of your mind, make a character that's got the gift of the gab, since that's what you'll be doing 90% of the time.

I mean, maybe "sucks" is too strong a word, but no one replays it for the fights. So a strongman build is a waste of time.

Talking is a better tool for results than fighting in Planescape, for certain. Also, the full thing is coming out? or just another 'chapter' for the new Torment?

Anything. It's more about spec and gear than class.

I like video games like Mario or Mortal Combat and unfortunately have not much time for playing (college, homework, friends).

Ugh. Those two suck at times. I get frustrated watching them sometimes.

Re: The Video Game Thread
Hmm, it's been a while
I've put about 60 hours into Mass Effect Andromeda and really, I plan on completing and then shelfing it for the ineveitable story DLCs, it does some definite things wrong, but it does more right, to my eyes, the open world shift is interesting because it definitely weakens the stakes, but hugely adds to the sense of a 'new world'. The best missions tend to stick to the original triliogy's closed corridor design, such as loyalty missions and major story missions, it's an odd dual identity, and generally, I think it'd probably be better off with just big corridors, so many of the goals and missions found out and about are really just extra fluff to the game's time, the second go through I've ignored a lot of things I did the first time through. The writing has definite missteps, but no more than the original set of three, to my ears. The biggest issue here is that the stakes of major decisions don't play out with signifigant consequence too much of the time, I'd say about half the decisions feel like they carry the same weight as some of the choices you had to make in the original mass effect(s), it's a definite set-up game, as so many things feel out in the open still, and the end essentially tells you 'yeah, there's more, dude'. But that's fine, it's pretty easily the best playing game bioware's ever made, not their best written, but it's written with enough satisfaction that I can't honestly say I felt disappointed. It's good comfort food, it's not the best meal of the year, to put it one way.
Nier Automata I still have to finish but it feels like one of the best games of the year, super interesting writing, incredibly good game mechanics, great mood. I'm savoring it.
Night in the Woods is in retrospect, funny and touching, but it doesn't strike me in the same way other games of its ilk have, I enjoyed my time there, a lot, great art, great storytelling, but I think it's ultimately let down by its pace, oddly enough.

Missed you Das! Haven't yet played any of the games you wrote about, but I enjoyed reading your thoughts on them, and noticed you didn't say anything about a huge title this year, Resident Evil VII; have you played it yet? I feel it does a pretty good job of putting an intensely immersive, personal 1st-person twist on the series while still (for the most part) bringing it back to a more grounded Survival Horror base as opposed to the Michael Bay shenanigans the main series has indulged in as of late, while also often being surprisingly, effectively subtle and restrained with its scares, while also having a refreshing sense of humor and camp in its references to previous games and classic Horror movies.
Finally got a Switch and I've been playing Breath of the Wild. The game is fantastic, but also entirely overwhelming in scale. I don't have the time to play a game this sprawling, so rather than cut back on the game, I have simply ceased to be a functional adult.
But earlier I was playing the game during a thunder storm, and the power cut out. . . but the Switch switched over to handheld/battery mode and I just kept playing Zelda with all the lights out. It's the system twelve year old me always dreamed of.

Jesus that's a fantastic game.
On that note, everyone who enjoys walking simulators should drop what they're doing and play What Remains of Edith Finch.
