Damn Kiddo, you're making me want to give it a second look. I think the drinking games (drink for as long as blood is spewing etc.) kinda killed my enjoyment.

So Trev, have you experience the horror?

The terrible, terrible horror of it all?

I haven't watched much of anything, lately. I've gotten some new books. And I've actually been socializing for a change. Crazy stuff.

But Martyrs is high on my priority list of films to watch.

A Zed and Two Noughts
Reccomended by LEAVES

Where's the weirdness on this movie? If we compare it to others, it's nweirdness comes from a different source. It's weird and bizarre because of the way people act in here, they take some very fucked up decisions and do some very fucked up things. It has a great feeling that what you are watching it's not this real, not part of this world, but somehting else a place were all this bunch of people like to gather and do their things. I just loved that.

The film also plays a lot with the concepts of symmetry, polariteis, death and human behavior.

Never were rotting corpses so fascinating.

You don't need it to be...

Image

to be strange. That's more garish, and I've seen garish a thousand times. Time lapse decomposition as the central motif of a film? Never seen it before. Never seen most of what Greenaway does here before. Hence, strange. Sometimes it's strange just to be original.

Strange and original, yes, nothing like I've seen before.

It was my first Greenaway. I really need to see more. Like The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover.

Martyrs (2008).
Recommended by Sammael.

The prologue is an account of a young girl's escape from her imprisonment ina warehouse where she was tortured, and recovery and confinement in a mental hospital. Looks like another set-up for your usual j-horror influenced torture flick. Then we get that little shock and head-scratch-er-of-sorts of a prologue close. Cue the title card.

Alright. This is a horror movie, but not meant to scare. After the first half hour, there's really no more moody suspense or anticipation.

After the title cues, it's split into three distinct segments. The first being the 'revenge' of the girl Lucie, 15 years after the torture, tagged along with her lesbian lover whom she befriended in the hospital. Lucie also has a severe mental disorder, which she's had all through those 15 years. She imagines that she's being chased and sometimes attacked by one of the dead women who she once saw in the warehouse but couldn't rescue. Lucie imagines being assaulted by this creature, when in reality is self-harming herself.

The second segment, which shows the discovery of a brutalized-but-still-living girl and the protagonist's attempts to care for her, might be the most heart-wrenching the film gets.

Momentum is lost. The final bit plays more like your average plotless torture-horror movie constantly trying to outdo itself. That is, until the final 5-minutes. Then we get some really fucked up moments I'd rather not spoil. It's not an ending I expected, nor do I think is really all that fitting. But fuck, it won't be one I forget anytime soon.

Martyrs is - in a similar vein as Eden Lake and Funny Games - one of those nasty, bitter horror movies that hates life and forces you to hate it, just as much. I like the films. Sometimes. Does that make me bad?

Good stuff amigo. It is without a doubt one of the most polarizing films I've ever scene.

I think if I can stomach a few more watches, it might even crack my favorites list over time.

There's also acid boobs, let's not forget them.

Now that I think about it, Crocodile Vagina would make a great movie title.

Pink Narcissus
Recommended by Wolfy

I only watched the first half. It was more than I wanted to tolerate. It's a film of montage-esque visuals. Very neon-ish. Very flamboyant. A fashion nightmare. And well. That's it. Nothing really of interest, either.

Insanity.
Over the top situations.

Truly insane las 40 minutes.
A great ending.

Too happy and colorful setting at the beginning which remind me of Burton.
