I never said anything about the form of your writing or the sincerity of your content. I just mean that those sentence, mostly the second, have the ring of thematic analysis to them. Which makes me doubt the sincerity of your avatar. ;)

My avatar is sincere, and I'm pretty certain that those two (there are actually three) sentences serve a strategic purpose. ;)

And just to make things clear, I'm against a "wall-of-text" composed of just thematic analysis...

A Blevo recommendation

This is a WWII tale concerned primarily with examining humans under extreme duress. What makes one man break while the other remains resolute? We have two Russian soldiers to focus on who leave their starving unit in search of food. Punishment squads of Nazis are all over the frozen landscape of Belarus, and one of our lead players is shot in the leg. Though the wounded man is a liability, his cohort risks his neck in taking him to shelter. They are caught by some traitorous countrymen who have thrown in with the Germans as "policemen." One of the captives is tortured almost mortally, while the other readily volunteers information to save his skin. The final scene is very sad as there is a hanging of four prisoners (including one child) for bogus war crimes. The Judas who chose survival is left to contemplate what he has done in the context of this brutality.

This was Shepitko's fourth and last film. The director died in a car accident at age 40. It's really a shame because the filmmaker showed an ability to get yeoman effort from her actors and a gifted eye with a camera, particularly on facial closeups. This was a moving picture and I thank Blevo for the rec.

Larisa Shepitko is female. She was Elem Klimov's wife.

Rhythm Recs Chapter 1 of 3 : Unrequited Love
Image Image
Bette Davis' forehead meets Laszlo and the Casablanca doctor in Now, Voyager.
A sprawling epic of suppressed childhood, wicked mothers and cruises like faded dreams.
Satisfying on many levels, this unfulfilled romance defies doom and finds happiness in unlikely ways.
There are trains to say goodbye to à la Brief Encounter, there are tears to be born and
cigarettes to be lit...two at a time...to share the smoke coming out of lips when faces choose to be apart.
Image Image

...

Image Image
In Lola, Jacques Demy, sets up the perfect wannabe-love story.
One's happy ending becomes another's self realization and as the couple walks through the streets of Nantes,
Anouk Aimée turns into the less ethereal brunette version of Vitti in L'Eclisse. This relationship won't
evaporate into thin air, but mostly into...light, upon faces and milky beams through windows, while the
shadow of Ophuls' camera is always present. There’s happiness in simply wanting happiness.
8 pm never looked brighter.

Post Re: The Corrierino Film Orgy Forever

in the order of earliest to latest viewing:

WHITE DOG - Samuel Fuller, 1982

Image Image

All but one supporting black character is a victim. All-white civil servants are portrayed oddly and unrealistically. Through this, a white peoples' naïveté is implied of our pale lead, contrasted against the swarthy wisdom of her ebony co-star much as whites are widely considered ignorant of the "black experience". The race of those medical and law enforcement personnel may not actually be intended to imply anything, instead to merely maintain sound narrative (I.E. keeping the "white dog" at peace by keeping his black enemies out of the picture to begin with), but the implications arise. Are we to note as allegory the dog's slaver-like acceptance of hospitality in spite of trained hate that renders his provider's mere skin color a vulnerability ("If you're black you might as well not show up on the street, less you wanna draw the heat"), or take it as victory for the provider, considering the literal species distinction? Additionally, in the face of multiply referenced cynicism regarding Hollywood, the exaggerated canine behavior (and many of the humans' reactions to it) suggests creature feature. If anything, one foot is in that monstrous territory while the other rests in effectively emotional social issue drama. The body is largely in balance, cautioning that fierce racism is still sneaking amongst us, endangering us in ways we may not realize, and may never be abolished. Oh, and Morricone's score is very good, naturally.

SUPERVIXENS - Russ Meyer 1975

Image Image

For the fair amount of work I've seen from Meyer's noted contemporaries, the man's work itself has remained a blind spot until now. Supervixens is comparable to fragments of Al Adamson's better output (I.E. I Spit On Your Corpse), with its (free-to-film-in) desert setting and narrative subject matter, but the "nudie cutie" diagnosis sets it apart. Meyer's is a world where women, defined by ample endowment, are readily available and willing. Sexual prowess holds sway over just about everything. We men feel powerful, though, in that we turn down the bounty. Chide us for doing so and you're in trouble. This purposefully silly romp is done with uncommon vigor that builds and builds until a quite literal climax. I'm not sure what to make of the subtle Nazi humor, but on the surface it's amusing.

More Vixens:
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image

M. HULOT'S HOLIDAY - Jacques Tati, 1953

Image Image

I've been meaning to look in to Tati's Hulot series, so what better place to start than the beginning? Well, hm. It's difficult to fault this one for much. Its Chaplin/Keaton-esque appeal is obvious and its atmosphere attractive. Its commonly employed descriptor is 'gentle', and I concur. Furthermore, Hulot's mere presence as opposed to his purposed actions causing agitation in the beachside community's balance is occasionally humorous and surely took a special mind to conceive. I cannot, however, say I was ever all that amused. By the halfway mark it was a waiting game for the finish.

SWEPT AWAY - Lina Wertmüller, 1974
(no feet from Wertmüller)

Image Image

This one takes a while to get going as it establishes its sympathies for the proletariat, simultaneously condemning the heedless vapidity of the bourgeoisie. As with its central characters though, once marooned it heightens, becoming exponentially more interesting as it goes. The isolated island setting boils life down to core elements, here easing the occasionally humorous evaluation of class hierarchies. I quickly rally as seemingly intended behind our male lead and snicker at the stubbornly aristocratic woman in her misery. Little compassion is shown for the latter throughout, even as her new superior's vengeful "game" treads on tyranny. In some ways it's redundant to introduce the film's content in review, as it is already laid rather bare. This does not make it any less apt to indeed sweep us away - both in sociopolitical debate and unlikely (and, if you will, Breakfast Clubbed) romance.

FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET - Dario Argento, 1971

Image Image

Definitive Argento! Easily one of the better - and scarier - films I've seen from the giallo master, second probably only to Deep Red (though it might be noted I've yet to see several of his more reputed works). Imbued with the spirit of late '60s psychedelic rock, Four Flies features what I believe is the only love scene I've encountered in an Argento and an interesting way of passing over its protagonist's explanations to his acquaintances what the audience is already aware of. Plus, Bud Spencer!

Memories of Murder

Bong Joon-ho 2003

recommended by Nocturna

Image

Three years before he directed The Host, Joon-ho Bong released this film. It has much the same urgent, frenetic feel of The Host, but this one deals with a series of murders in 1983, set in a rural Korean town. The ineptitude of Detective Park Doo-Man becomes apparent within moments of the film's beginning. His partner (and accomplice in irregular methodology) Detective Cho Yong-koo is no more able to follow the rules. Cho likes stomping on people, or leaping across interrogation desks to tackle them and their chairs to the floor. Park believes he can sense a detainee's guilt by looking in his eyes. He uses a shaman and her magic to try identifying the serial killer, all to no avail.

Detective Seo Tae-Yoon arrives from Seoul to "find the killer," a fact which irritates Park. Seo uses more orthodox methods, but as the film nears its half-way point it begins to be obvious that he is influencing the local cops less than they are influencing him. So the question is, will he give in to their illegal methods of extracting confessions from the innocent simply in order to wrap up a case, or will he manage to stick to his more professional guns?

I listened to the Korean language track for this film, of course, so I found the acting to be top notch. I can't render a judgment on delivery, but certainly the body language was well-done. I'd have missed the subtleties carried by the dialog with subtitles turned off, but I believe the gist of the story would have come through quite well. Thus, Memories of Murder is quite cinematic at its core.

The characters are quite interesting, almost realistic, if not quite cartoonish at times. I'd put this film up against any American comedy. It is never the kind of comedy to make you laugh loudly, but I was alternately scratching my head at antics, and grinning at absurdities from the opening shots right on to the final credits.

The story is not strictly a police procedural, if only because Bong is constantly making fun of his protagonists. But he is making fun of our tendency to think that the police will get the right criminal. Basically, we are disengaged, and in truth don't care about justice as much as we care about getting someone punished for the crimes we are told have been committed. Of course, if we learn of a miscarriage of justice, suddenly we are up in arms. The give and take, push and tug of the story are well thought out. I really enjoyed this film. It is as good as Nocturna promised. Thanks for the recommendation!

I had fun. Thanks for reading!

The Future Unreels will also lose all its images on the same day. But just think about how many images Jedi has on Photobucket, and the other posters here.

I really liked Memories of Murder. The ending is a real punch to the gut.

I have never seen an American crime drama end that well.
