When I did a thread on 90s music (what? five years ago?), this song wasn't available anywhere other than Grooveshark (rip). Some wise soul has decided to rectify.

"Rid of Me" is pretty well worn by now, but it was brand new then. I'll go with a deeper cut.

Back in the days of used CD shopping, it was imperative to locate the part of your city inhabited by your local music critics because it was a well known but unspoken fact that critics sell most of their promo copies given to them for free by the labels. I can't exactly ride the high horse here, as I'm buying CDs without paying royalties either. It was a strange symbiosis at work. Anyway, that's all completely irrelevant now.

The day I bought my copies of Transmissions From the Satellite Heart and Boces was very strange indeed. The convergences were restless.

This tape has almost half of the Bubble & Scrape album on it. Very profoundly pubescent self-pity stuff. Naked and loose when no one's home. You'll love it.

Ever since that SNL Weezer skit, I "rediscovered" them. Had Blue Album since forever, but now have listened to and really enjoyed Pinkerton, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, and White Album. Pink has that juicy, bristly less-studio-finessed instrumentation, Everything pop-rocks its way through some clean little songs (and a nifty three-song suite at the end), and White adds a Brian Wilson angle with its beachy setting/lyrics, esp. on more shamelessly evocative tracks like "Girl, We Got a Good Thing" and "Summer Elaine and Drunk Dori."

Red Album and Black Album are less satisfying. Will probably stop after checking out Maladroit and Green Album; haven't heard good stuff about Pacific Daydream, Hurley, Raditude, or Death to False Metal.

That's the spirit.

I think I prefer Pinkerton from Weezer. I think it has some of their better guitar playing.

You guys heard of this Kiwi slice of bloody valentine fuzz?

Agreed. Apparently a lot of the fans think the music lost something with bassist Matt Sharp wasn't there to counterpoint Rivers Cuomo, and I can get what they're saying. (The producer on the White Album forced current bassist Scott Shriner to listen to Sharp's work on Blue and Pinkerton as homework.)

I like the Blue Album well enough. It's kind of an impossible record not to like, or love. But Pinkerton is the only thing they ever did that really resonated with me. Not that I ever go back to it, because I don't, but I think it's probably one of the best albums from the 90's.

And, yeah, I think the exodus of Sharpe plays directly to their quickly declining output.

Killing Joke is one of my favorite bands. I love everything they've done, even their more pop-oriented Brighter Than a Thousand Suns and the maligned Outside the Gate. They're more post-punk/Goth than metal, but you'd probably like them, Stu.

I like to call them "pre-industrial", a catagory also encompassing Throbbing Gristle, PIL and Caberet Voltaire, all of whom I've been digging deeper into lately.

You should add Einsturzende Neubauten, Skinny Puppy and Front 242 to that mix if you haven't already.

Hm, that's really straight industrial. I was lumping those folks who were beginning to lay the groundwork.

This is not industrial.

I still don't really know what this song is about exactly (I don't consort with the Long Island sort if I can avoid it), but I can listen to Rufus sing the phone book.

I prefer the more mellow, pastoral Animal Collective to their digital rave cacophony, but I'm convinced that they will never be better than this.

I really like Tool's new album. I'm not sure how many Opeth fans are here, but it's reminiscent of Damnation and their output since Heritage in tone and song length.
FWIW, I'm just a casual fan of the band. I'm only really familiar with Sober, Stinkfist and their Lateralus album.

As casual a fan of Tool as I am (I tend to enjoy thier albums for a few spins when they come out), I'm much more casually a fan of Opeth, or really any modern metal on the more conventional side of, I dunno, Mars Volta. That's not to hate on Opeth - I've heard a number of their things that I like - it's just that I only have so much attention span left after trudging the latest Deftone "masterpiece".

I've been rocking out to Poets of the Fall and their alter ego Old Gods of Asgard since I was lucky enough to see them at the ProgPower festival last weekend and because I've been playing Alan Wake's American Nightmare. Here's their song from it:

I'm late to the party, but after hearing Rammstein's Deutschland, Radio and Auslander, I can proudly declare that they are back.
Hopefully, they'll do a North American tour. They put on a hell of a show.
