Is it just me or are the old YouTube embeds kaput?

If so, I guess we'll have to go back to posting links or learn a new embed procedure.

Acetone is a band I haven't heard mentioned in a long time.

This track was one of my late-90s late night regulars.

Trent Reznor's pre-NIN project, the '80s pop group Slam Bamboo. Sorry about the poor audio quality.

Every couple of years I attempt to grasp the Kate Bush thing, with no success, but I think I finally made a connection on this latest attempt. (Listened to Hounds of Love over the weekend.) I'm not quite prepared to join the cult yet, but it feels like she got her hooks in me this time. Any fans around here?

I'm still not entirely sold on the female vocalists but I'm enjoying it more on a second listen.

I'm mixed on that part. Fundamentally, what I've always liked most about the National is its aloneness. And other voices, female or otherwise, makes their music sound less alone. But, that said, I like almost all of their parts. I think the female voices are some of the best moments on the record.

For me what I think it is is that I think I am just finding it a little too uniformly low key at the moment. Even for their usual uniformly low key standards, it really stays in a low gear too often.

I don’t like The National, but one song briefly featured Arone Dyer of Buke and Gase so it was a slight improvement. They could do better by getting rid of all of the members of The National and adding in the other half of Buke and Gase and then they’d be onto something!

You’re echoing my initial thoughts when listening to it and my general appreciation of the somber, lonesome melancholy that punctuates their albums but having gone back for subsequent listens with these changes in mind, there’s a ton to appreciate here as an experimental departure from their normal.

Besides, Boxer, High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me represent a trifecta of that sound perfected so I’m cool with them trying to branch out.

I'm warming. Maybe it can be my new heartbreak album since my recent gf just decided to go back to her ex which suuuuuuuuucks. Sadness is a good binding agent for me with music.

I'm a really big fan of Alligator as well, but yeah, those are three of the crown jewels. I find Trouble Will Find Me doesn't get nearly enough respect. I think I might listen to that one the most of all.

Sorry to hear that, amigo. The National tends to connect to those most unpleasant of emotional dips and turn them into something potent and cathartic.

Alligator is great (as are Cherry Tree and Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, the self titled doesn't belong in the conversation). Daughters of the Soho Riots is one of my favorite songs from them. It just doesn't have the uniform greatness of those three. I could say similar things for Sleep Well Beast.

Trouble Will Find Me would make it on the list for Pink Rabbits alone. There's a lot of great tracks on it but PR would be on a short list of favorite songs ever. Period.

Meh, I saw it coming a mile away, and thankfully didn't get too deep into the relationship or I would have been mince meat with this one. Some people are just so clearly better and more interesting than others. Uuuuuugggghh.

Same about PR. It's my favourite of all their songs. Favourite of the last decade, without pretty much any competition. I love that entire album though.

I don't dislike their first album at all. I might even prefer it to Sad Songs, which is an interesting album with a lot of good tracks, but just feels moorless as a whole.

OK, so I posted this a week ago and in the days since I've listened to the album daily, sometimes multiple times, I've watched various interviews and 2 documentaries and by Sunday night was pricing Kate Bush box sets on Amazon. As I type this I've got three of her songs stuck in my head simultaneously. I'm ready to be fitted for my hooded robe, or whatever it is the Kate Bush cult members wear. Good stuff, just sorry it took me so long to catch on.

I listened to Hounds of Love after liking "Running Up That Hill" and being all, what the hell is this white girl nonsense, but then I kept listening, and now I love Kate Bush. The Sensual World is pretty dope too.

So yeah, took a bit of adjustment for me too, if not as much as you.

I think my mistake in the past was to approach her chronologically, as the vocal loop-de-loops of her younger years were more pronounced and possibly more off-putting than the less-drastic stuff like Hounds. Should've just started with that one in the first place I guess. Listened to Sensual World a few days ago and that is indeed a good one. I've come around to the early stuff too.

Of course as an American my only real exposure to her had been the "Running..." video back when I was 14 or so, which I considered weird and impatiently sat through as I waited for the next Whitesnake video to come on.

King Crimson's catalog (except for the glaring omissions of In the Court of the Crimson King, Lark's Tounges in Aspic and Red) is on Spotify, so that, obviously.

I finally got a hold of a vinyl copy of Black Monk Time, a double (maxed out with singles) on white vinyl (apparently limited to 300, but we'll see). The original 1966 pressing is obviously still too precious.

The Ween above was from listening to an old mixtape from summer of '93. I'll see if I can post some other things from that, omitting some obvious ones ("Creep" being one wallowing example.)

A good forgotten band from Portland.
