Doctor-assisted suicide: I'm for it if the circumstances validate it. If I was wasting away of a terminal illness and in incredible pain I wouldn't want to put myself or my loved ones through all the misery of an excruciatingly prolonged death.

Hah, clearly you don't know the history between Young and Skynyrd.

Young made a song about the ignorance of Alabama to which Skynyrd responded with Sweet Home Alabama, a song that includes a line specifically attacking Neil Young.

The good ole boys of Skynyrd and Neil Young were actually good friends. In fact, Young had written the song Sedan Delivery for Skynyrd, but then that whole plane crash thing happened.

According to my dad, this has all come about as a result of the government's sex education policies. Teachers wait by the school gates ready to greet each four and five-year-old not with a "hello" but with a snappy piece of sex advice, and lessons consist not of alphabets and times tables but of detailed discussions about condoms and how they come in all sorts of different colours, shapes and sizes.

The guy who hasn't set foot inside a primary school for a decade is best-placed to draw such conclusions.

New Mexico > Arizona

...even if Arizona does have a radio station with Alice Cooper as their evening DJ. The Route 66 Cafe in Williams is pretty sweet, too. Williams in general is a neat lil' town. It's like Gardiner, Montana +1 (that said, Gardiner > Williams).

I don't know about that. I mean, the article makes a valid point, but high schools teach less and less valuable skills, so post-secondary education is more vital than ever. I think people have more options now as to what they can be.

At the same time, this
"It's sad to know she's going to miss that mind-opening effect of an undergraduate degree," Popkes said. "To discover new ideas, to become more worldly."
is bullshit.

Okay.
It can be. But going to college doesn't guarantee it, and you can gain that experience outside of college too. For all you know, the girl could spend 4 years at college partying every night and barely scraping by in the classes. We all know someone like that. That ain't exactly mind-opening, but it defines college for a fair number of people.
And life, depending on how you choose to live it, can be an enlightening experience. People who don't go to college won't necessarily miss out on that.

The person quoted was being fairly definitive though. She had one line in which to say why she was disappointed her daughter wasn't going to college, and it was "the opening of the mind, she will miss out on it!"

Of course, she probably said quite a bit more that was cut out, and that one line was probably misquoted as well. So nobody's being definitive and we can all be happy with open minds. That's what a degree gives you.

What is bullshit is when government leaders set targets for how many people they want going into higher education. "We want 60% of school leavers to go to university!" - they might as well be saying "We want to reduce the useless portion of society to a manageable and acceptable 40%!"

Fully agreed on this point. Especially considering university degree holders can also become useless, this odd rationale and arbitrary target makes even less sense.
