I've had recent cravings to revisit the Super Mario Bros. movie. Does anyone else have fond memories of that miscalculated shitheap?

I remember those two guys that got turned into.....goombas? Or were those goombas? They looked like dinosaurs.

They definitely took some liberties with the character designs.

I see they were trying to go the realistic route but It just didn't work. Although that Bomb Omb scene was hilarious. Like really?

That movie was deeply confused about who its audience was supposed to be. "Hey, let's take this lighthearted, primary-color-drenched fairy tale kids' game and turn it into a dark and murky dystopian nightmare with moments of body horror that would make David Cronenberg blush. Would you mind passing the cocaine?"

I can sorta justify the creative decisions given that Mario, uh, lives in Dinosaur Land... Super Mario World is all about Dinosaur Land. I, uh, actually kind of appreciate having these dinosaur mutants in some dank sewer city and have a couple plumbers be the heroes there, it isn't a HUGE stretch from Bowser's leather dom daddy aesthetics. Dennis Hopper is some fine casting for some sewer dinosaur lord... yeah

Cocaine, yeah, lets go with that

Yeah, the Super Mario Bros. movie was bafflingly terrible, but a more faithful adaptation of the games isn't necessarily destined to succeed, as you can see in this review of the 1986 Super Mario anime:

Love me some Nostalgia Critic. And, I know he just reviewed the amateur fandub of the film, but that voice acting; Ho. Lee. Shit...

Beat Resident Evil 7 which despite having a long list of nitpicks I loved the hell out of it. Started playing it again on Madhouse but dunno how ar I’ll get before I get pissed off or distracted by another game.

Also messed around with The Flame and the Flood which is a pretty standard gathering/crafting survival game.

And I been playing a little Yoshi’s Island on my SNES Classic which is a blast but can be frustrating at times.

Not a fan of the big "choose your own ending" moment in RezE7, eh? :P That was silly, but still, the overall game was a lot of creative, gory, 1st-person Survival Horror fun, and often legitimately creepy/scary, and has actual tension as to whether or not you'll survive the next encounter, something that the main series hasn't had much of in a long, long time...

I didn’t mind that part actually. I’d have preferred a little more enemy variety, a longer game, a more interesting protagonist, and a better final boss fight though.

One of my favorite SNES games, although it does have glaring flaws: besides that annoying menu system, the boss fights (except for the final one) are too easy. Just slam them with your most powerful spells over and over and they're dead. The soundtrack is killer, though.
Secret of Evermore is also very good. I may like it a little bit more.

Bought the Mega Man Legacy Collection (Games 1-10). Playing thes games pretty much for the first time. Beat 2, 3, and 4, didn't beat 1 because I didn't have an upgrade needed to progress, so I'll gt back to it. Currently on Mega Man 5.

After watching it the other night, I'm happy say that I'm right there with you. I wouldn't even all it a guilty pleasure. I think there's genuine chemistry between Hoskins and Leguizamo, which is funny considering how confused, drunk and miserable they were behind the scenes. I love the creatures, set pieces and grungy dystopian aesthetic. It's the sort of movie that despite having jello for plot, manages to keep me enthralled regardless, much like Dan Ackroyd's Nothing but Trouble. Maybe I'm just a sucker for grotesque nonsense.

Hadn't checked this thread thinking it would be all new stuff, Xbox and Playstation crap. Glad to see there's a lot of nostalgia here.

Re: Super Mario Bros. movie, for some reason I never saw that, even though I was a teenage fan of the games at the moment, but I guess I should give it a try, if only for laffs.

Re: Mega Man, easily my favorite video game series. Love the shit out of every installment, regardless of how repetitive they might seem. My favorites were the first three and yeah, the Quick Man stage still makes me sweat profusely.

Horizon Zero Dawn is great. I love that world. I love the DLC too. I haven't beat it yet but I will eventually. Just got sidetracked. I beat the Battlefront II Campaign mode. Good Star Wars story. And it's pretty fun too. Although I played on Hard mode and it got a bit too hard at times haha.

Chemical Plant is good, but I would put something from the first Sonic game ahead of it. It's an unpopular opinion, but Sonic 1 is my favorite of the series. It is an elegant, well-paced platformer with far less bloat than its sequels.

Nah. Sonic 1 is too bloated. 2 stages per zone fits Sonic fine. 3 stages feels like you're recycling too much.

Two stages is preferable but the zones in Sonic 3 / Sonic and Knuckles still go on for far too long. Sonic 2 fares better, but stages like Hilltop, Oil Ocean, and the pointless Sky Chase Zone really drag it down. Emerald Hill Zone is a poor man's Green Hill Zone. I don't like the brighter, Saturday morning aesthetic of Sonic 2 compared to the cooler, "edgier" Sonic 1. Sonic 1 just feels like classic Sega, the type of game that differentiated them from Nintendo. Sonic 2 felt like an attempt to lighten things up, complete with useless sidekick.

I actually feel the same about Streets of Rage 1 vs. 2. There's no doubt that Streets of Rage 2 is the prettier game, but stages like the amusement park and baseball field did away with the grittier, rougher atmosphere of the first game. Remember how every stage in Streets of Rage 1 took place at night besides the last one, when you could just make out the sun rising outside Mr. X's penthouse? Contrast that with how the sun is already shining bright on the lovely beach /jungles of stage 6 in SOR2. It's a different tone.

gaming is good in controlled doses :shifty:

my steam sale pick ups:
Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition
Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy (not on sale)
Dark Souls 3
Cuphead
Besiege
Prey

Getting Over It is a lot of fun for what it is (a climbing a mountain while in a big kettle pot and a sledgehammer simulator). It's exactly as frustrating, but fun, as it sounds!

Dark Souls 3 is beautiful but I don't understand these games at all, like, the strats and shit. What are the strats! How do I "farm souls"? Ugh! At least I'm mechanically good at the game but I always run into bottlenecks which try my patience to extreme extents and why do I do this to myself

Besiege is a kooky lego-esque medieval war machine creator where you employ said machines in a variety of missions. Very cool for the price, it tickles the kid inside of me

Prey is off to a strong start. I love digging through trashcan simulators and this seems to have Bioshock/System Shock written all over it. It's throwing some neat-ass narrative tricks around

Cuphead is that Flescher-era cartoon shooty game which is right up there with the best 2D shooters. I'm talking Contra, Metal Slug, Gunstar Heroes, so on so forth, this game provides a worthy high five to the power players. I'd play the shit out of an arcade version. The animation is obviously super incredible but I'm more impressed at how good of a game it is

Planescape: Torment is the best written game ever and why I'm The Nameless One. You should play it

I could probably give you some solid Dark Souls 3 tips, for starters thinking of “farming souls” as grinding in a JRPG, find a bonfire adjacent location that has easier to defeat enemies with a high soul pay out and run a few laps. As for “strats” I’m mainly 2 Handed Blade/Pyromancer so I only know how to play that.

You should play it
Dark Souls 3 is essentially a send up of the previous 4 games in From's repertoire, so starting earlier would be advisable.

Every time I see his stupid face x 9, I wanna punch my monitor. The internet is like a giant... I can't think of the word at the moment, but it's basically a collection of people who have one talent and travel around so that their talent remains fresh by visiting it upon new people. They don't improve or change, just keep doing the same thing because it works. I fucking hate it man, I really do.

Thanks for posting about this, because it prompted me to finally buy a copy of Planescape. Some close friends have raved about it since it came out when we were in high school, but I never got the chance to play it.

And yeah, Cuphead is awesome. Gameplay is strong, the animation is pure delight. I can't tell you how many times I died, not only because the game is good and tough, but because I got distracted by the visual craftsmanship on display.

Not something I'd have jumped at normally, but Titanfall 2 is $11 on Amazon and it just came in the mail. I'm not much for first person shooters but from what I've seen it reminds me of Doom (2016), which I played religiously.
