It's so much fun. I had only seen Ryan O'Neal one time before, in The Driver, so it was nice to see him, you know, talk this time. But his daughter Tatum was amazing, one of the best child performances ever I think.Wooley wrote: I haven't seen Paper Moon in a long time but I really liked it back in the day, watched it several times.

I actually just watched it for the first time yesterday for my research on the films of '73 for the New Hollywood thread, and I really really liked it, so much so that it might even be my current favorite film from that year, at the momentWooley wrote: I haven't seen Paper Moon in a long time but I really liked it back in the day, watched it several times.

I need to try Raising Arizona again someday. The first time I saw it, to quote Tommy Lee Jones, I could not sanction its buffoonery.

Clearly you love the Moore era. Like I said on the other thread, that's an era I need to revisit. I also don't remember anything about The Living Daylights, and never saw Licence to Kill. It's nice to see Quantum of Solace and Die Another Day near the bottom of these lists. Man, do they suck.

To be honest, I have no big, big issues with Quantum of Solace. I just find it mostly dull and unremarkable. But Die Another Day? Ooof, that one's a stinker for sure.Torgo wrote:It's nice to see Quantum of Solace and Die Another Day near the bottom of these lists. Man, do they suck.

Re: Lists Lists Lists
It actually has my favorite character-arc of almost any Bond movie (maybe my favorite). I'm not sure what people don't like about the movie but what it shows about who Bond is, what kind of a man he is, and his relationship with MI6 and M is special and is also essential to Skyfall (which is a movie I did have problems with). The final scene in the snow between him and M is one of my favorite scenes in Bondom.Thief wrote:

Re: Lists Lists Lists
Have a lot left to watch obviously, but so far:
01. Mission Impossible: Fallout
02. Annihilation
03. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
04. Aquaman
05. Black Panther
06. Won't You Be My Neighbor?
07. Hereditary
08. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
09. Creed II
10. A Quiet Place
11. Deadpool 2
12. Crazy Rich Asians
13. Incredibles 2
14. Ready Player One
15. Halloween
16. Avengers: Infinity War
17. Solo: A Star Wars Story
The nice thing is that it isn't until you get to 13 and 14 that I start to dislike the films more than like them-- and even then, I can't eke out anything more than the mildest of disregard for Infinity War and Solo. Although I can imagine Crazy Rich Asians lowering and lowering and lowering. The more I think about that movie's hedonism and fairy tale bullshit, the more annoyed I get.

Attempted top 10:
BlacKkKlansman
Hereditary
The Standoff at Sparrow Creek
Annihilation
Shirkers
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Roma
Mission: Impossible - Fallout
The Other Side of the Wind
Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse
Worst of the year was The Predator, by a long shot. Fuck that movie.

Re: Lists Lists Lists
TEN BEST MOVIES I SAW FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2018:
ANNIHILATION (Alex Garland, 2018)
ANNIHILATION fuses mutant monsters and lingering trauma into a creepy-ass journey of self-discovery. As the heroines of the story trek through the alien-impacted "Shimmer," you're equally likely to think of ALIENS, cellular mitosis, and the mistakes you've made in your own life.
BRIEF ENCOUNTER (David Lean, 1945)
For a film about a maybe-consummated affair, BRIEF ENCOUNTER feels passionate and tense - the stiff-upper-lip repression is like a sheet of ice constantly on the verge of cracking. I especially loved how the heroine's husband has more insight than you might expect.
CHI-RAQ (Spike Lee, 2015)
CHI-RAQ barely holds together - with its spoken-rhyme dialogue and mood swings between grim street violence and sex farce - but I loved watching the film's confidence, I loved having no idea what might happen next, and I loved the fury about gun violence buried under every scene.
THE CONVERSATION (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974)
This movie carries an attitude I can recognize: I'm proud of the work I do, and the work I do is killing me. The flick's mystery generates great suspense and one hell of a surprise at the end, and Hackman's Harry Caul breaks the heart as a man caught between pride and loneliness.
HALF-NELSON (Ryan Fleck, 2006)
A therapeutic movie, about characters facing real-world problems with untidy solutions. Ryan Gosling is a great teacher; he's also drug-addicted. Shakeera Epps is a charming student; she's also a drug-runner. Their twin pursuits of escape invoke hope and dread in equal measure.
HIS GIRL FRIDAY (Howard Hawks, 1940)
Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell verbally spar in the spirit of comedy classics like THE THIN MAN and THE PHILADELPHIA STORY. The best thing about movies like this is knowing nobody on Earth was ever this clever and watching them outsmart each other anyway.
MIRACLE MILE (Steve De Jarnatt, 1988)
A Los Angeles everyman picks up a ringing pay phone and hears a government worker screaming about an imminent World War 3. What will he do? What would *you* do? The Tangerine Dream score and neon colors turned this thriller into a surreal cross-city odyssey.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT (Chris McQuarrie, 2018)
A movie born for cable TV: whenever you come in, you need to stick around because there's an amazing scene coming up. The action's utterly clear and joyfully messy in the spirit of INDIANA JONES, with Ethan soaking in each new escalation before shouting, "I'll figure it out!"
OUR HOSPITALITY (Keaton & Blystone, 1923)
Up to now, my favorite Buster Keaton flick is STEAMBOAT BILL JR., but OUR HOSPITALITY comes close. There's a sequence here where he has to save a woman from a waterfall by tying himself to a log and swinging across a cliff, and it made me gasp out loud.
PHANTOM THREAD (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2017)
Like THE MASTER, PHANTOM THREAD centers on two souls that crash into each other and lock into mutual corrosion. Only... it's hard to say who's corroding who (twist!). My favorite of PTA's since PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE (which is sort of an inverse to this one).
