The Corrierino Film Watching Trends

Post by Epistemophobia » Fri Aug 27, 2010 9:06 am

http://corrierino.com/trends/

At the above link you will find a web page that I have created. I am hoping that with the involvement of every poster here it will provide for us an interactive, live picture of our current film watching trends.

Here is how it works: each day you will be able to add one film to the list. Do not worry about missing a day, as it will simply carry over to the next. You have all been given 7 entries to start out with, to get us started. You must add films using their IMDb URL or id, e.g. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0810784/

Which films to add? Your most recent viewings, of course. If you watch more films than you have available entries, I leave it up to you to choose which you wish to submit, although the degree to which you would recommend the film should play a part. Re-watches are perfectly acceptable, as are short films.

As films and directors receive multiple viewings they will climb their respective top lists. Ideally I would like to start discussion threads for the most watched works of the week/month.

This is all experimental, but I believe with enough continued participation it can be a useful and interesting tool. Please contribute regularly!

There. I submitted everything I've seen since the beginning of June.

Pretty good idea.

Also, the "Full List" button doesn't seem to do anything.

It doesn't look like the films you added went through. Did you use the IMDb URL?

Oh shit. That explains a lot.

Yeah, I'll have to do all of that again. I was adding by title.

I need to learn to read the entire first post in a thread. It'll save me a lot of trouble.

It will accept any of the following;

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0810784/
tt0810784
0810784

Title is too vague, unfortunately.

In a word, I think that, far from favoring directors’ formal inventiveness, widescreen, instead, stifles it. It is, I’m more and more persuaded, if not the only, at least the main culprit for the expressive poverty of the image today. - Eric Rohmer

Added Wanda (1970) and Farewell to the Summer Light (1968) as I rewatched it fairly recently.

This is a fun kind of list.

Some things that might be useful, if they wouldn't be impossible to code:

- Sorting. Being able to sort by title, year, director and overall ranking would be extremely helpful.
- Formatting. "Killer Inside Me, The" and "Winterbottom, Michael". This ties directly into the last suggestion.
- A "number of watches" category. Pretty self-explanatory.

I have a question!

How long does the list go for? I mean, since it's "currently watching", wouldn't the films get deleted after a certain time?

The first thing that comes to mind is that a wave graph would really help this pop... like the one for last.fm here: http://build.last.fm/item/36

If the hotlink works, here's a thumbnail of what it looks like (sample image from above link):

Image

...seems to fit the "trends" aspect of the whole idea.

Regardless, I'll be adding the views currently in my signature and I'll try to remember to keep on top of continuing to add films as I see them.

Alright. I just added 7 of my recent watches. When will I be able to submit a title again? Will one spot be open, tomorrow - that how it works? Or will I have to wait 7 days.

Since I'm from the future, I can tell you that at midnight it opened up one slot to enter a film into. Obviously this will last all of tomorrow, so I'm going to do it in 20-something hours, not now.
