okay, I am totally sharing too much, but I thought since a lot of effort was put into assembling this I'd also share it. Since 2012 I have worked as producer of content at the community TV station where I have also volunteered my time as a member of the board of director from 2013-2014. This is a playlist including all the videos made under the banner of the show, some of which I have been directly involved in (as writer, editor or host), with others where I act only as producer.

* does youtube embedding not work for playlists?

Anyone read this essay about typography in the film Alien? Fascinating breakdown of design choices and the minutiae of art direction. I don't find the discussion of near-invisible continuity errors very interesting, but the amount of detail the author goes into is pretty impressive. Haven't read the other articles on the site, but I assume they're of a similar stripe.

Great piece by Rosenbaum on Stray Dogs: http://www.jonathanrosenbaum.net/2015/0 ... tray-dogs/

Almost as noteworthy: Rosenbaum's site, I now discover, has finally stopped being an assault on web design. The featured stills are even the same width and all.

In the Realm of the Senses is so, so good. It was the "secret sex movie" my parents none-too-cleverly hid inside a bedroom cabinet. I was such an insufferable film snob that I refused to watch it on account of the image being too blurry to allow me to appreciate the art design and directing. These were matters I worried about at the age of twelve. (I've since seen it streamed in, yes, better quality.) Another "secret sex movie" in my family tree is a random Tinto Brass film, whose title I've forgotten and the VHS edition of which inexplicably rests on the living room shelf of my hardcore Christian uncle and aunt.

Mmm, good stuff!
Bridget Penney wrote:If Akerman’s work often has female experience at its centre, that is not to define it as only concerned with female experience and that is no reason to play down its extraordinary interest and importance by ringfencing it as feminist. Staring intently into the mirror is a search for truth, for self-knowledge; questioning what is involved in adopting or constructing an identity. The young woman gazes steadily into the mirror and back out at the viewer. Both male and female visitors, confronted with her reflection, have the opportunity to identify with her.

Watched Django Unchained for the 1st time recently, and was let down by it, partly for the same reason as Basterds, so I edited a short montage comparing/contrasting their overall approaches with a certain other QT movie, to illustrate why that one was so effective, and how they fell short:

Just read this, and thought it was pretty insightful on the topic of subjectivity (if a bit short), but this part stuck out like a sore thumb (down?):
Requiring other people to reflect your views back to you in order to establish their validity, especially in a field they know more than you do about
Ah, the ol' "art is subjective until you're 'educated'".
