93. The Master

You know the big P word in film criticism right? I don't exactly want to brandish it in regards to this movie, but I do feel like it's kind of an idea left deliberately vague to inspire all these interpretations built on the rickety scaffolding of some random ass shit near the end of the movie. Or everyone else is just smarter than me and that phone call in the movie theater or talk of past lives and balloons in the Franco Prussian war is the lynchpin to truly getting the whole thing. Thankfully, I don't give a shit about any of the big picture interpretation, cause you got two generational talents chewing scenery at each other in amazing giant closeups with peeks of an immaculately recreated late 40s/early 50s in the background, that's enough for me.

That was more a comment on how few movies I’ve watched, what with my empty live and content overload.

Went to see “The Master” in a small indie theatre that’s located inside a small New Hampshire Town Hall, Phoenix was robbed of Best Actor that year

Well let's see, theres what 20,000 seats at most, toronto has what seven million people on it, the average house price is like a million dollars, and they're the NBA champs and also still really good this year. You didnt squeeze in any economics classes eh?

Definitely a lot cheaper since you can just uber to a game, save the airfare and hotel in toronto.

Watching de-aged Deniro beat a guy up but still moving like an eighty year old man might make my list of funniest scenes of the 2010's.

And I'm sure that one fake-looking fight scene between Sonny & Carlo completely ruins The Godfather, too.

Oh definitely, it's just funny in the opposite way basketball is, the regular season I mean. Cause in bball it means nothing cause only like four teams at best have a legitimate shot at winning the championship, and in hockey literally any team that makes it into the playoffs could get hot and win it all.

The homage is the final shot of the film, a direct reference to the final shot of Godfather and a 180 contrast of the respective Pacino characters.

It's also comparable to the end of Part II as well, except
while Michael Corleone at least still had wealth, power, and custody of his children at the end of that film, Sheeran didn't have any of that, even though every single one of his children were still alive, so he had to keep living with the knowledge that he's lost them forever, and all he could do was wait around to die, and with him still (barely) alive at the end, he has no idea how much longer he has left to linger in the world, so it's an even bleaker conclusion by comparison. Brilliant, brilliant stuff, Marty.

High School friend who doesn't drink much wanted to go to a bar because they had Super Smash Brothers on an N64. Turns out it was drag show night. Before the show, we hang out and play Smash for a bit. Everything seems fine. Ten minutes into the show, he just leaves without saying anything and tries to walk home. Ten miles in light rain.

Definitely the most fun I've had with a movie this year; so much energy, so much creativity, so fucking ALIVE. Plus, one of the characters let Johnson get back at all those online neckbeards who wouldn't stop whining that "Ryian ruined Last Jedguywaaaaaaaaaaaaa", which, of course, is always a good thing.
