This is one of those moments where VFX technology is driving narrative features. Usually, someone cooks up the story and then the VFX people have to figure out the magical bullshittery to make it seem real. In this case, however, I think we're seeing the recognition of the potential of state-of-the-art VFX tech to inform the narrative.

Remember the Abyss? That's OK, no one does. But the visual effect of the "water alien" in the Abyss directly shaped the design (and avowed properties) of the "liquid metal" Terminator in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Without the Abyss, you don't have effect. James Cameron developed the effect and then determined how to reuse it in another film. In effect, the cart driving the horse.

I think this trailer is the same thing. Remember Logan where old man Logan has to fight young man Logan? Remember how blown away people were by de-ageing effects on Ian McCellan and Patrick Steward when they did the Dark Phoenix story? Well, we now have the effect, so that, in effect, offers a narrative opportunity. Will Smith can fight the younger version of himself (the one we used to know and love). I think someone finally said, "Fuck it, these deaging effects are so good, why don't we just make a movie with the young Will Smith?"

I saw this at a festival a few months ago and thought it was a really funny, kind of pretentious movie that was a blast with an audience.

New poster for Wonder Woman '84, one that I'm hoping is hinting at a more colorful, Ragnarok-ish visual direction for the sequel than the seemingly historical accurate but still familiarly drab, muddy palettes of the original, the kind that has defined too many entries in the DCEU:

series on DC's network. they'll show the whole first season and then that's probably it, unless people really dig it and complain.

not that I need to convince any of you guys. I'm sure this will not bomb but the most I can hope for is that everyone seeing this will leave the theater feeling empty. nyah

The reviews out of TIFF (or was it Venice? *shrug*) weren't exactly terrific, but I suspect there's probably some Netflix-hating going on with that, so fashinable in today's festival scenes. I'm going to watch this regardless of whatever the fuck Alonso Duralde can dredge up to think.

I mean, a lot of Netflix produced movies got very well reviewed at TIFF, so I don't think the more tepid response to The Laundromat is just to blame at some Netflix-bias. Even High Flying Bird got better received, I think.

I dunno, maybe their publishers lost some investments in Panama or something.

The festivals are at least less obstinate about Netflix (Scorsese's Irishman will open the Rome festival) than apparently the American theater chains, which recently determined to derail that film's wide release by refusing to show it on their screens. It looks like most of us will have to settle on watching Irishman on Netflix instead. Looking at the current release schedule, I don't see an opening for Laundromat either, so it's probably the same situation. It would be a shame if these films were to deprive screens for things like Jared Kushner's Goldfinch.

Since I'm looking at the schedule, here's a short list of my anticipated American releases (some are limited enough to make a theatrical watch undetermined):

Ad Astra
First Love
Pain and Glory
Jojo Rabbit
The Lighthouse
The Current War
The Dead Center
Harriet (directed by Kasi Lemmons!)
Motherless Brooklyn
Waves
The Report
Ford v Ferrari
Knives Out
A Hidden Life
Uncut Gems

Things like Joker and Doctor Sleep fall into probably inevitable but reluctant watches; but, boy, do they both look so stupid.

You know that sometimes I have to confirm the kill.

Joker is (inexplicably) getting great reviews, even though, to me, it looks like a fairly obvious attempt to frame the Joker backstory into a nexus between Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, a lazy gambit that appears to have a lot of easily impressed critics chomping at its low-hanging conceit-bait. But, hey, who knows?, maybe the guy who made the Hangover movies has been a secret auteur this whole time with heretofore untapped reserves of emotional and thematic depths?

Doctor Sleep is a book that seemed like parody if you weren't aware King wrote it himself, a completely unsolicited and unwelcomed Shining sequel that pins it all on an evil cat. But this Mike Finnigan fellow has the distinction of not being as embarrassing as James Wan, and his Gerald's Game was only trite in its last five minutes, so maybe he can find ways to salvage the material, although I seriously doubt that King will allow as much of a creative leash as Kubrick insisted.

At least, worst case scenario, they both promise to be spectacular shittrains.
