ah shit, I'm probably going to end up seeing this.

I know it's pure nostalgia bait but there's no way one of my fellow 90's Kid friends isn't going to drag me along.
I'm guessing Pikachu is the dad through some kind of science experiment or something. and then the movie will close with a montage of Pikachu trying and failing to to normal dad stuff (like throw a baseball). whatever, nobody is seeing this for the plot.

Even though Gilliam had been working on this movie for 20 years or more, it seems like he still had no idea where to go with re-imagining the tale of Don Quixote, so he just ended up with some kind of farce that is a) not funny and b) slightly misogynistic*. And there is some storyline about refugees thrown in there for some reason. There is one scene that contains that typical Gilliam magic, but that only lasted for like one minute.
But the main problem is in the setup
The movie wants to be some kind of redemption story for the Adam Driver character, but he basically hasn't done anything wrong. He made a student film years ago and after he left, his leading man went insane and this girl he flirted with went to Madrid to become a model/actress and ended up as a prostitute. Neither of those things are really his fault.
Instead of making him pay for leaving behind his artistic integrities and becoming a corporate sellout, which would've fit perfectly with prior themes in Gilliam's work

* This might be just me being overly sensitive, but it kinda bothered how the three major female characters (that I can remember) are a bitchy, adulterous woman, a prostitute and a nagging old woman. I mean, at one point, the prostitute (who is also the love interest) says something like "If you were a real man you would've slapped me" :-/

I'm getting Wicker Man vibes. Whether this is more Robin Hardy or Neil Labute we'll have to wait and see.

Meh poster, and I haven't really been into anything Tarantino's directed in the last decade, but I'll probably check it out anyway out of curiosity; whether he's good or not, at least QT's almost never been boring, right?

Looks incredible!
The real mall that stands in for this series' mall, Gwinnett Place, is where I spent a lot of my childhood and teenage years. It's so dead that I'm surprised it hasn't been demolished yet, so it's going to be very surreal to see it back to life.

Yeah, that's the one. I don't know what it is about Tarantino, but some people really hate him with a passion while others will glorify him every chance they get.

Trailer looks fun tho. I'm only afraid this is going to be his Ready Player One. I hope he gets a good editor this time around.

I mean, Fred Raskin (who edited Django and Hateful Eight) is probably good at his job, but we need someone who is able to fight Tarantino's ego.

A lot of QT's stuff could do with a bit of editing down (especially in the more dialogue-drive scenes), but the lengthy runtimes were never the main problem for me, any more than his indulgence in cinematic homages; yes, they were one of the elements that helped distinguish his overall style, along with the other obvious aspects like the gratutious retro needle drops on the soundtrack, the long, extended build-ups to sudden explosions of violence, and the colorful, profane chatterboxes that he calls characters, but I never felt like any of those were the ultimate deciding factors in whether his movies were good or not; in other words, they were his spice, not his meat. Rather, QT's work has always risen or fallen based upon whether they were fundamentally substantive experiences, especially in terms of developing the characters in significant, compelling ways, whether it be Jules's individual arc of redemption from "the life", Max & Jackie's over-the-hill, star-crossed romance, or Bill & The Bride's rich love-hate dynamic, which were the reasons the movies those characters were in are my favorites from him. His recent works have been disappointingly weak on that front, and I feel he's regressed back to the direction he took on Reservoir Dogs, which, to paraphrase Ebert's review of it, he basically sets up the story just fine, and introduces us to the characters to us, but then he doesn't go much of anywhere with them, a flaw that has resurfaced in his recent works, all of which have plenty of the Tarantino style, but little of the substance; Hateful Eight was a bit stronger in the evolution of its characters, but still not by enough, and I'm still hoping that Hollywood will be the film that sees him course-correct on that front.

Joel Coen ditches Ethan for Macbeth adaptation starring Denzel Washington & Frances McDormand:
Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand are taking on Shakespeare.

The Oscar winners are in talks to star in Joel Coen’s adaptation of “Macbeth.” Coen will direct from his own original script, and expects to shoot the movie before the end of the year. This marks his first film without frequent directing/writing/producing partner and brother Ethan.

A24 will distribute the pic, which Scott Rudin will produce.

The iconic Shakespeare tale follows a lord (Washington) who’s convinced by a trio of witches that he’s destined to become the king of Scotland. With the help of his ambitious wife (McDormand), Macbeth tries to seize the crown by any means necessary.

After taking a brief break, Washington has a busy schedule ahead of him for the foreseeable future. He will first shoot the Warner Bros. thriller “Little Things” in the fall, followed by “Macbeth” at the beginning of 2020. He will then pivot into his next directing job, “Journal for Jordan,” starring Michael B. Jordan.
