Really? Those three are doing '09?

Yep, me, Brightside (or Smitty Whatever he calls himself now) and Rhythm are doing a best of '09 countdown thing. Apparently we make an odd group. Expect randomness. We're each doing a top ten with five honorable mentions. If there are any questions about release dates (and there probably will be), I'm just letting you know now that I don't care. Personally, I'm of the opinion that this was one of the strongest years for film in a while, so I'm pretty excited for this all to begin.

2009 was good. These lists are terrible though.

Everything around me is evaporating. My whole life, my memories, my imagination and its contents, my personality - it's all evaporating. I'm just posting the honorable mentions in the order that I made the banners
Image
This is two hours of constant political wordplay that never stops being funny, even if the end is a little terrifying. It’s certainly not the year’s best comedy, but it’s easily the funniest. The cast is impeccable and the direction is perfect for what the film requires, but this is a writer’s film. It has some of the best dialogue I’ve ever heard in a comedy, which makes me think I should probably get around to watching the show it’s based on.

Boo, hiss, Zac's gay. I know, right? But so is Trip, & we still love him.
That being said, 17 Again was easily the biggest surprise of the year for me. I blind bought it, don't remember why, & thought "Well, Zac is dreamy & there's that Chandler guy. Oh, & Judd Apatow's fairly awesome wife. Cool. Wait, this will suck." Luckily, it didn't even a little. It was genuinely funny throughout & far more mature than I had even thought to anticipate. Not to mention Efron proves himself to be more than just a pretty face... he's got a decent body too. No, but srsly. Guy can act. He even made me cry.

What is this write-up?

OK. Firstly, don't raise your voice. This is a sacred place. Now, you may not believe that and I may not believe that, but by God, it's a useful hypocrisy. And, secondarily, I believe your Prime Minister has instructed you to work for me. Oh, the great Malcolm Tucker. One of your guys leaks a paper -- you can't do anything. Huh? We tell you to get some intel -- you can't do anything. I need you to move the vote back -- you can't do anything. I am afraid you are nothing but a useless piece of S star-star T.

From my original review: “At this point, Werner Herzog stands in rarefied air, in the mix for every discussion of the “greatest living filmmaker,” and almost unquestionably the most influential living European filmmaker after some of the surviving members of the Nouvelle Vague, which made the announcement that he would be directing Nicolas Cage in a sort of-remake of Abel Ferrara’s 1992 Bad Lieutenant even more perplexing. Thankfully, he is still Werner Herzog, and not only has he vastly improved on the original, but Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans is his greatest narrative film since Nosferatu in 1978 (and yes, I know that means I’m saying it’s better than Fitzcarraldo). This is a stunning, beautiful and darkly comedic look at post-Katrina New Orleans anchored by Nicolas Cage’s best performance in years.”
