Remember also the time period the show takes place. The kind of breakdown Don had was something people often would vilify. Emotional outbursts were considered obscene and low class in certain circles of society. So not only did he jeopardize the business, but he did it in such an undignified manner.

Yeah, exactly. And we're also talking about a period where mental health problems weren't seen with the same respect as they so widely are now. Don couldn't even get through his day without pouring alcohol into his coke can.

The "Miracle" Mets of 1969 improbably came back from being a disaster of a franchise, even losing a league record 120 games in 1962, and won the World Series. If that's not a metaphor for Don I don't know what is.

Don is more interesting this season than he's been in years.

I'm trying to think of storylines in the show that just didn't work. The only ones I can think of is Peggy and the priest and Betty getting fat (what the hell was up with that?).

Haha yeah. I think it was just fan service to have Kinsey in the show again but that was a weird turn.

True. Plus it was only one episode, right? The fat Betty and the Peggy priest story threads went on way longer than that.

Actually I wasn't too into the Betty moping in the latter half of season 2 either though I understand how it was necessary for us to get to the point of Don and Betty's divorce.

Who knows if this is true but I've thought that, since Betty got thin, they're been subtle hints that it's due to "diet pills" rather than any true effort on her part

could possibly factor into why she was so pissed at Bobby for giving away her sandwich. Also Bobby said something like, "I thought you weren't eating today"

The whole idea of him actually working and being expected to produce work for other copy-writers is, hopefully, going to be like a renaissance for him. I mean, when's the last time he wrote copy? He did that devil thing for Sno-ball last season and like, nothing before that for years.

Relative to the question about why Betty gained so much weight: quote from Mad Style

"Betty always reacts to things instead of taking action independently. And she’s highly influenced by the people around her; especially the women. She dyed her hair and gained weight in a mad dash to turn herself into Henry’s mother, for instance. Here, she’s impulsively signing up to chaperone so that she can feel good about her choices …"

I've got my wife caught up to season three (I was a couple eps in to season 5)

she haaaaaaaates Betty Draper:
"Look at their headboard. What a stupid cunt."
"Tell her, Sally! Fuck her." [at Sally in the closet after smoking calling BD "Stupid and mean"]
"I get little bursts of hatred every time she's on."
"What kind of name is January anyway. Oh, hi, I'm September..."

Some random thoughts beyond the obvious moments in this week's episode.

Peggy watching TV with the neighbor's kid on a Saturday night, she's turning into an old lonely woman while still in her prime. Did anyone else hope when Ginsberg approached her with the "gift" it meant a relationship was beginning to bud? It felt like the intention.

Lou Avery is a great villain. Where is TV Guide when you need it with a list of greatest TV villains, he'd be in there.

Can we get a Sally spinoff?

Sally and Don might be the best father-daughter tandem on TV. Sally's character arc has been fantastic, and we've seen the actress' ability grow exponentially as she grows up on the show.

Where's the discussions? So much to talk about.

Stu!

How are people feeling about the season so far? I really loved the first three episodes but the last two have left me with mixed emotions. Both of them have plenty of interesting things going on and both featured sequences that were horrifying/lovely/better than most stuff on TV. Yet I wasn't sure they thematically wrapped together the way the best episodes tend to do. They felt a little sloppy, even if I was enjoying what was happening in them.

The main issue I seem to be having is with the structure of the season. I probably shouldn't get so hung up on it because ultimately, once it all airs, it can be viewed as one season and not this split-up shit. I think the last two episodes especially have felt like this because while they may work as episode 5 in a regular season, they don't work as the final 3 episodes of a season. The fact that there are two episodes left already has thrown me off. It's not really the fault of the show, and in the long run it won't matter, but it's throwing me off right now. I hope we leave the season on an intriguing note and from there on out I'm basically going to be hoping for perfection out of the last 7 episodes.

With 2 episodes left I hope they put some groundwork for the end but I also want some sort of resolution to Don's Arc. Wether it's him earning back his job or something else.

This show is hitting its stride in classic form, now. So many wonderful moments this week - obviously DON AND PEGGY DON AND PEGGY DON AND PEGGY, but so much more. The return of Bob and Trudy, the continued destruction of Don and Megan's marriage, the absolutely brilliant, evocative, bittersweet and cynical final shot. About as close to perfection as TV gets. Roger openly mentioning the war with Cutler. Ted as prisoner in LA. Pete resorting to his old, sexist self. Moshe Dayan and Stan eating a banana. The plane ride to and from NYC. Roger's tits. And of course, DON AND PEGGY!!!!
