JediMoonShyne's [World Championship of Film] III

Post by JediMoonShyne » Mon Apr 09, 2012 10:53 pm

Image
Through the steady snores of a bearded sleeper, the enthusiastic cry of an underworked alarm clock pierces the air. Louder and louder, its shrill call eventually rupturing the man's rhythmic snoring, the poor clock soon receives an ineffective clout for its dutiful exploits. But an instant later and with the sudden terror of full realisation, the sleeper is asleep no more; he is up, over the buxom figure that lays motionless at his side and away, out of the door in a whirl of carelessly sprayed cologne and dark sunglasses, hastily placed over darker eyes. Blearily, though still managing a well-practiced strut, he breaks through the barrier between night before and morning after: a crisp day in Athens, and a street deserted but for the occasional hurried pedestrian and odd shell of an upturned automobile, still smouldering from the previous evening. With a slight nod, the man turns the collar of his leather jacket up against the wind and trudges off, firm-footed on streets he has traveled many times. Presently, he comes to a small market square, empty but for an unkempt figure who sits, leaning against the wooden frame of an unoccupied stall. The man's stray auburn locks hang down, partly obscuring his original, vintage Freaky Friday t-shirt, as he carefully picks the stray strands of cat hair from his frayed bell-bottoms. The pair, despite their differing appearances, quickly exchange a warm grin and clumsy embrace, before giddily comparing the contents of each other's backpacks - stuffed to the stitches with their respective recommendations.

A while later, the pair arrive at a shaded street, most of whose touristic shop windows are yet to be opened in greeting to the young morning. This year's chosen location, a narrow knick-knack store that the two men find with minimal trouble, is one of the few exceptions: its owner is already outside, bent over his wares. Miniature busts of popularised Greek gods; faded, replica ceramic pots painted in gaudy colours. Seeing our duo approach he straightens up, pulling a black clipboard from the front of his crusty trousers before wordlessly waving both men through the store and down into its cavernous cellar. There, perched atop a crate of breakable plates, and surrounded by a groggy yet mildly attentive group of self-proclaimed cinephiles, a handsome young individual beams: "Welcome, my dear friends...", he begins, causing the crowd to fall silent, "... to the third annual World Championship of Film." Much scuffling ensues as the bearded man shoves through to the front of the crowd, his rumpled companion following apologetically. "I am your host, JediMoonShyne, and you have been invited here today, to this particularly ordinary location, to participate in something that isn't so ordinary. A grand total of 32 posters have been plucked from around the world, each of whom has chosen a single country to champion. These countries, each represented by a squad of 5 films, will now compete in a filmic duel for the ages!" The latecomers share another grin, before dumping their recommendations on the nearby table and proceeding to attack the provided refreshments.

Quick question because I forgot: Will the films you choose for each round be chosen at random from our lists, or will they be picked in the order they're presented on the table?

1. Are those empty ones not submitted lists yet?
2. LEAVES shouldn't be allowed to play. He refuses to post here.

my favourite thread ever! Disheartened that I am up against South Korea though, such a powerhouse and I know how fond of it Jedi is. I am working on making an unstoppable line-up though.

On the other hand, Jedi's extensive knowledge of Korean cinema might work to pwiedenheft's disadvantage.

This is awesome. I actually feel somewhat OK about my squad this year as well. And at least if I'm getting knocked out in the first round again it will happen immediately!

Also, interesting squad for Taiwan. Am actually planning on watching In Out Time in the next couple days for mah thread. USA and France have exceptional picks this year as well.
