More Tamil masala referential-dreamscapes (putting R... Rajkumar in its rightful place). Plus the stalker tropes, but with Rani pursuing and inhaling. Odd odd movie, but totally endearing.

Tamil romantic-psychological-thriller indeed. Somewhat-but-not-really enjoyably ludicrous. Still, Dhanush dancing (and really singing)...

Y, it only works in parts. But the early romance stuff with him and Haasan work quite well for me. It's the thriller-y stuff that falls apart. To my mind, she's really trying her own variant on the Selva-Dhanush films except Selva does better with this type of high-concept thriller material. His films end badly as well but remain engaging for longer and have more memorable moments.

Love that song btw.

Chennai Express. Emma remarked upon how fit SRK was looking, and later, upon how big his biceps were. I chuckled quietly to myself at her delightful naiveté re. the hierarchy of Bollywood biceps.
Also, whenever Rajini comes up, I start to become deliriously excited. Something to reflect upon, no doubt.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela | Sanjay Leela Bhansali | 2013
Best Bhansali. Not only for it's lack of precious airlessness (ugh saawariya), but also for the overtness of its female gaze. Ranveer is introduced as the sex-bomb object (toting an empty water pistol), and Deepika as the (somewhat) sexually assertive subject (carrying a loaded gun). Well, something like that.

rewatched a little of saawariya to see whose gaze was fixed upon ranbir and his towel.

i'll definitely stick with best bhansali, not bhansali best.

Anyway, the funeral scene was gloriously vicious. And Konkona. The usual concerns.

philip: "Ironically (and this is typical of the film), close-up shots of the smiling, singing schoolmaster and children praising the New Order are juxtaposed with pathetic images of Govindji and Gunga laboring painfully under the Old; clearly, the democratic dispensation has not reached everyone (and in fact, reading between the lines, it is the continuing exploitation of the poor that makes middle-class mobility possible)."

Omar: "Towards the end of the film, the landscape takes on a will of its own and Bose lets us see nature’s mystical powers through the smoke from the funeral pyre that billows into the air, shrouding the villainous figure of the despotic landlord."
