Willow, Kurz & Char Remember 2012....

Post by charulata » Sun Jan 13, 2013 11:02 pm

Image
It's time to look forward etc and clearly 2013 is going to be the greatest year ever for cinephiles with the Hou, WKW, Gray etc etc releasing but Willow, Kurz and I wanted to pause for a few and give 2012 its due. So this thread is an awards ceremony of sorts where we nominate and highlight some of our favorites from the year in a bunch of categories.

The thread will have two rounds. First, we take turns nominating films in each category and then in Round 2, the 3 of us have a secret party with a passcode and collectively come up with a winner in each category. There will be sparkly gowns and tuxedoes and champagne and if any of you want photographic evidence, you'd better post in our thread and such.

Also, feel free to praise and/or denigrate our choices, express astonishment and annoyance at films we missed or just use this as an excuse to complain about how cinema is dead (pls don't do that actually).

The categories we agreed upon are as follows with the number of Round 1 nominations per category in parentheses:
  • Best Ensemble (6)
    Best Supporting Actress (6)
    Best Supporting Actor (6)
    Best Lead Actress (6)
    Best Lead Actor (6)
    Best Music (6)
    Best Cinematography (9)
    Best Director (6)
    Best Lefties (6)
    Best Film (6)
    Best Scene (9)
    Best Musical Moment (9)

The first to be nominated for Best Ensemble is Wes Anderson's collection of lovable human oddities and fine New Penzance people, or rather those that inhabited them.

Damsels in Distress
Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress has maybe my favorite ensemble of any film this year. The film is lead by Greta Gerwig, Carrie Maclemore, Analeigh Tipton, and the scene stealing Megalyn Echikunwoke.

Magic Mike
Another example of human oddities imo. Tatum and McConaughey already won me over with other performances but this cemented my love for them. Gorgeous ppl being given a chance to be their most human and vulnerable.

Django Unchained
This pick might be a little more controversial because opinion here is mixed, but I am firmly in the Django Unchained fanclub, and I adored the four main performances of Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx, Leonardo Dicaprio and Samuel L. Jackson. The film does have it's weaker performances like the underutilized Kerry Washington, but the strength of the four leads makes this one of my favorite acted films of the year.

It's supposedly a documentary, but those prisoners are really perfectly cast. What a set of faces! And there's the acting in the play within the film.

All the acting was really strong in Django Unchained save for Tarantino.

In a word, I think that, far from favoring directors’ formal inventiveness, widescreen, instead, stifles it. It is, I’m more and more persuaded, if not the only, at least the main culprit for the expressive poverty of the image today. - Eric Rohmer

Dewitt in that movie was one of my contenders as well. She's always great it seems.

Loved DeWitt in that. When is she gonna play the title character and actually be the main character already?

Yes to that but I also kinda love how she quietly steals the show in all these films and ends up being the most memorable part of them.

She is the best part of Nobody Walks as well. A film I did not like at all, but her performance was great. I really love her.

This lovely lady moved me and cracked me up with her dementing old women that reminded me of my own grandfather warning me of tigers with her crocodile stories.
