Great list! I still have to see many from it, though. Holy Motors I've had for months, but I haven't found the time.

Did you see The Master Izzy? Do you have a write-up? That was my favorite film of 2012 going by US release date.

I saw The Master and it's a very good film. I had a brief discussion with JMS on page 1 or 2 I think about The Master and PTA. In sum, it came just shy of my list. Visually a treat. I just wanted a little bit more out of it though.

I was actually disappointed in it visually, expected widescreen and flashier moves, but my over-the-top Scitol expectations were saturated beyond all expectations and dreams. Turn my eyes black, Izzy.

I saw 3 of those mentioned, so I consider myself something of an expert on the year that was 2012 (wherein I believe I have seen roughly 12 films total), and in my estimation the year is irrelevant because Neighbouring Sounds is the sort of stuff you just wish you'll find, and then sometimes you do, and you sleep well. Maybe you didn't see it. I wanted to see it, but I was out of town the one week it was in town, and I saw it recently, and the internets says it is 2012 so see it, it's lovely.

I've yet to see Neighboring Sounds but I really want to. It's one of the few films I didn't see from 2012 that very, very likely could have cracked my list if I had seen it. Sucks.

Few films? You sound awfully confident. I always assume that by being extremely selective, skipping all of the hyped up arthouse films, selecting only the most outlandish, divisive, and/or acutely delicate films I will ensure that I have seen the best of the films that I have any chance of hearing about, hopefully reaching that elusive 3% of the best films of the year mark. No great film goes un-undistributed, after all.

Well, I mean I'm sure there are more, but there were only a select amount of films from 2012 I wanted to see. I tried to see most of them. I wasn't able to see all of them. Neighboring Sounds was one. The others were Thursday Till Sunday, The Loneliest Planet, and You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet. I've got copies of some of these, I just haven't watched them yet. There might be some others, but these are the only ones I can think of right now.

I started the first half but it was really late and I didn't finish it. I really liked what I saw. Looks like it probably would've made an HM on my list at least.

Lol, yeah, but I have a chronic problem with starting movies late night and aborting them. I'm half way through like 15 films right now (including the new Dumont, Europa Report, After Earth, Simon Killer, a re-watch of No, a re-watch of Citizen Kane, A Field in England, re-watch of Ashes of Time, re-watch of Marketa Lazarova with the new rip, and a few others). It's pretty sad and what sucks is I don't know how to prioritize them. And then I have all these other films I haven't even started yet, some of which I want to see more than the ones I've already started!!

That's how I watch movies now, though. I just generally finish them the next day. Although I'm generally good at piecing the two halves together and remembering the film as a whole viewing experience

I'm less so. My other problem is I get indecisive about which to finish, waste 15 minutes trying to decide, and then I end up watching something low brow and shitty that wasn't even under consideration and then regret it.

I won't start another movie unless I've finished the one I'm in the middle of. I might make an exception for some huge thing like Out 1 or Scenes from a Marriage or Berlin Alexanderplatz; in those cases I'd watch them like I would a TV show.

But I spend most of my day playing geography games on Sporcle, obsessing over my gym routine, watching what's on my DVR and all the new videos the YouTube channels I subscribe to have released, researching the latest international news and drowning in a pool of self-pity and intense self-loathing. Hard to squeeze a 1970s French film into that clearly very trying schedule.
