LEAVES

I'm figuring how how to write this without antagonizing LEAVES. Especially since he rec'd this under the "hottie" category. :shifty:

Beautifully shot film. Although there's a thing or two I didn't need to see in there.

I think that's all I got for this one. I don't have the energy. :D

I have to admit, the pacing and the style, it just runs so counter to what I find most entertaining, and it was tough for me to be as invested in this film as I thought I might have should have been. There's just not enough focus in the film to make me love it too much.

I finished this a couple days ago and never got to writing it up. My fault more than anything, watching these on a monitor away from a compy with good 'ol internets access.

This one felt like a two-hour mindtrip with subtlety that I couldn't get a good grasp on. I felt very distant from this film. And that's on purpose, I'm guessing. I'm also guessing this is a film that doesn't translate as simple. Like there's a barrier similar to a language barrier, if you get my drift.

Oh, French cinema. All of these French films I like, I can't explain why. I can't figure out why I like this one so much. I just do. Deal with it. Every romantic film is like 25% better when it's French, and it's unexplainable why.

Also, I'm tired and can't figure out what to say.

I started the review, then though, "hey, this is a very similar film to After Hours in terms of demeanor and mystery".

And then I saw cloak recommended that too.

I'm bringing my score from that film over to this film. 7. A bit inaccessible, but rapidly getting better in the final parts of the film. Not enough to make up for the rather disorienting beginning.

Robert Bresson

A minimalist film of sorts. It left a lot in the dark about how the plot and escape would unfold. Very few details, very few characters, no plot or character development...a very lonely film. Which really adds to the tension. You need the same patience exhibited in the film to watch the film itself. And that's ok in a film like this. Like it, don't love it, for that reason.

I can't think of a necessarily bad word to say about the film, but it just felt stereotypical. And I just didn't have much sympathy for anyone. Uninspiring.

Eminence Grise

I'll be honest, the latest wave of movies haven't inspired me very much. I kind of return to one of my old mantras for this film - well-written, not much of a joy to watch. Makes good art but not good entertainment. I have the feeling this is the type of film critics are all over, but for me, this just felt like 90 minutes of frustration in watching.

It's a bit hectic of a film, but that's probably by design too, to give the film a feel of what it's probably like for a teenage boy who seems truly lost.

Ha, these people are morons. This was a fun trainwreck to watch. Of course, when you have that acting talent on hand, they're easily capable of carrying this film all the way through. Well played on all sides, if a bit short and hollow.

After the latest run of films, sometimes it's just damn good to get into something silly.

Pamela Anderson, that was awful. Even for a film with zero expectations for half-decent acting, that was awful. At least try to inject something into that role. It's like she went into "crap, I can't act, so I'm just going to have to outsex everyone" mode. She could've made that role so much more fun. All her quips felt rehearsed, she never embraced the more humorous parts of the role, just blah.

Everything else actually holds up pretty well. This could've been a really, REALLY good film with a better job out of the lead actress.

Kovich wedges his way in between the 3-woman breakaway between our 3 female contestants at the top.

I'm struggling to think of any main character in any film that I hate more than Bo. I'll be honest; he sapped all the fun and joy out of watching this film. All of it. It was painful to see in parts. He just garners no sympathy from me at any point. I don't know if I'm missing any subtleties with the character. The film was decent for the parts where Bo wasn't being a moron.

Poor Marilyn tried to save it, but she's much stronger in a comedic role than in a more dramatic role. Plus she wasn't given enough to do.

I'm a curmudgeon. Sorry.

Unfortunately it's been several months since I've seen this so I probably won't be very articulate. I recommended this film because I felt there was a lot going on under the surface in terms of Marilyn's role. I felt that the ridiculousness of Bo was meant to be emblematic of Cherie's inability to control her own life. The idea that she is constantly at the mercy of others while always holding on to her dreams that she's going to make it somewhere. But they are only dreams because she's ineffectual and unable to give herself what she needs. Bo is just a symbol of that. I really think the film was supposed to be tragic, difficult to watch, and sorrowful. It was marketed as a comedy because era, hollywood, blah blah. There's nothing good or happy going on here.

What was really weird to me was a lot of that subtext in Marilyn's role was just too damn hidden. That's probably the biggest issue. It's been awhile since I seen it now too, but I don't remember her getting much to do outside of playing off of Bo.

Wait, Michael Cera can act? Who knew?

So eternity's first decisive film lands in the middle. It's nice to see a nice little thriller with no bells or whistles. A nice straight-up case of a girl gone crazy, and for reasonably pedestrian reasons. I approve of this. I also approve of Juno Temple's ass.

Well played, eternity. The bad? I just wasn't too entertained by it. I can't really explain it other than it was an awkward watch for so long, before it got to the end.

Side notes: I still kinda like Emily Browning. And Cera, I guess.

Well, I would say it kept the substance and cut out the fluff, but maybe it's the other way around. Either way, one half of that equation got cut out.

Fun with numbers: everyone in this competition has now posted a score of 7.5 or worse....except Izzy who's hung a 10, a pair of 9.5s, and a 9 on the board so far.

L'Avventura
Michelangelo Antonioni
1960

Izzy

7.5/10

Meh. Kinda droned on in parts, and that ending was weird. Ambiguity works well in many movies. I'm not sure it works in this one. I feel like demanding to know what happened to Anna.

The main path this story takes, with Claudia and Sandro, is mostly well done, and a good exercise in morality in a situation like that. Everything else surrounding them was much less interesting and compelling to me.

In the end, it's a good decent Italian film with a bit too much clutter. It gets too cute.

And someone's gonna have to talk me into Vitti being an elite hottie here :P

ROUND 5 FINAL

1) Izzy 45.5
2) eternity 43.5
3) rhythm 43
4) Kovich 42
5) traz 41.5
6) Rouge 40
7) snapper 39.5
8) Grise 39
8) dreiser 39
10) cloak 38.5
11) LEAVES 38
11) Mysterons 38
11) trip 38

So the lead is 2 over eternity and 2.5 over rhythm heading into round 6. Izzy needs 8.5 to win the championship, anything less leaves the door cracked open. Kovich needs to make up 3.5 points and traz 4 - possible, but unlikely. Everyone else playing for positioning now. 2 points separate 6th from last, so everyone's in danger of being the worst.

Through 5 rounds, the best 10 films recommended are:
1) Three Colors: Red (LEAVES)
2) The Gold Rush (rhythm)
3) Ran (Izzy)
4) Before Sunrise (Izzy)
5) Before Sunset (Izzy)
6) 12 Angry Men (eternity)
7) The Silence of the Lambs (Kovich)
8) The Suicide Shop (traz)
9) Taxi Driver (Kovich)
10) Anatomy of a Murder (Grise)

If only I could change my last round to Before Midnight. I don't think 2001 is going to win TAS over : D

If there's any movie TAS is guaranteed to like less than 2001, it's most likely Detention.

Start popping the champagne, Izzy.
