Honestly, couldn't get much into this film. At all. Tough watch. Silent film of poor quality just wasn't going to work with me here.

Stage Door
Gregory La Cava

LEAVES

9/10

Oh hey a bunch of actresses in the same room at the same time. Relevant to my interests, etc etc.

Actresses playing actresses are interesting to watch. A lot of the interactions felt natural. The plot felt natural. Everything felt natural.

I start what I finish. Especially when eternity is involved.

It's sometimes tough to have enough unique opinions on each film. Some inspire; some don't. You can tell by the scores; if you have a bunch of 7.5s and 8s, you didn't inspire. Polarizing scores in the 5s and 10s (to me at least) were much more in the spirit of the competition than you think.

Young Mr. Lincoln
John Ford
1939

Eminence Grise

7.5/10

See, this is why modern cinema is superior to classic cinema. Classic cinema sees Lincoln and thinks, "hey, a courtroom drama about him would be perfect!". Modern cinema turns him into a vampire killer. Game, set, match to modern cinema.

Margaret
Kenneth Lonergan
2011

traz

8.5/10

On a side note, traz has managed to make me think about her films more than about any other person in the competition.

(spoiler warnings)

I find myself very conflicted on Anna Paquin. She was annoying to me for most of this movie, just as she's ruined True Blood over the years when it should be focused on more than sexy female vampires. But maybe she's just good at being an annoying character. This film and script obviously called on her to be annoying in spots, so I can't complain about that.

I'm glad the final scenes where she finally admitted some guilt showed up, because I spent about an hour waiting for that, for her to finally take some responsibility. That stupid goddamn cowboy hat. She has some growing up to do, spending the whole film trying to get her own justice and resolution without everyone else's considerations. Those classroom scenes where she pretty much acts confrontational and maybe even a bit racist just reinforce the point that she thinks she's got the right view on the world and everyone else is wrong. It makes for a very well-crafted character but a bit of an annoying movie in parts.

The sex she had and the abortion (which I'm willing to bet there's a chance she made it up) are kind of bizarre. It felt like part of the story was missing on that stuff. That was an awkward interlude on the rest of the film, and is probably the main reason this film isn't higher.

I still don't know what to think of Paquin as an actress. I just don't enjoy watching her, at all, but she's good at being annoying, so I can't say she's bad at her job or anything.

Carny
Robert Kaylor
1980

Kovich

7.5/10

First off, Jodie is underage here, which breaks my heart greatly.

I guess I was kind unsure on what this film exactly wanted to be. It was never quite a story about Donna, or about the other guys, or about any particular conflict. The whole thing about the mafia people near the end, or really, about anyone who caused trouble with the carnival, never piqued my interest. It's an entertaining enough 100 minutes to spend, but it's held back by not really committing to Jodie Foster. Which is too bad because she's good enough to be the star of this film and never gets a chance.

This is me starting to realize Jodie Foster is an elite actress.

Margaret is meant to be structured like an Opera. And yeah, I thing Paquin's character works very well in the context of melodrama.

Also, the missing bits you're talking about, could be due to the fact that Lonergan had a longer cut of the film and ended up in a lawsuit with Fox over the run time and was forced to re-edit.

Also that comment about me,

Yeah, I think the film needed to be shorter or longer, or something. Matt Damon was pretty much unnecessary in particular.

The Cranes Are Flying
Mikhail Kalatozov
1957

rhythm

8.5/10

Strangely, I'm struggling to figure out what to make the review about, even though I generally like this film. It feels more like a stock plot, but the performances help carry it to something greater.

1) rhythm 51.5
2) traz 50
3) Kovich 49.5
4) Rouge 48
5) trip 47.5
6) dreiser 47.5

next: eternity (43.5) - Detention
Izzy (45.5) - 2001: A Space Odyssey

I have to imagine 2001: ASO is going to get at least a 6.5, given the way Izzy has beasted in this competition, so it comes down to if eternity can make up 2 points with a film that prominently features Dane Cook.

lol eternity

He watches all the films but hasn't shown a whole lot of "trying."
I Watch Films, But...
In a word, I think that, far from favoring directors’ formal inventiveness, widescreen, instead, stifles it. It is, I’m more and more persuaded, if not the only, at least the main culprit for the expressive poverty of the image today. - Eric Rohmer

Because for some reason they expect me to be on the same level as them

This was never meant to be a type of film journal thread that someone else might do. This was supposed to be a fun silly competition. The posters who don't know me are confused as hell because of it. Makes me laugh.

This is one of my favorite threads, win or lose. Why? Because NO ONE EVER finishes a competition thread hardly. These threads take a ot f work and the negativity is just counterproductive because it just adds more pressure.

Plus TAS commentary is sometimes outright hilarious. Do I agree that L'avventura deserves a 7.5? No - but somehow his review "a good decent Italian film with a bit too much clutter. It gets too cute. And someone's gonna have to talk me into Vitti being an elite hottie here" just totally makes up for it because you never see Antonioni reviewed like that.
