Within the first five minutes, Sterling Hayden’s dim brute of a sheriff corners a newly single mother on the street, and characterizes her refusal to marry him and her efforts to raise her son alone thusly: “You’re digging a big black pit, and shoving all of us down into it!” He is also quite insistent on introducing the boy to all the wonders of weaponry, telling mama that guns don’t kill people bad people kill people and good people use guns to kill bad people. Then Sinatra shows up as the bad people and we’re like oh fuck Hayden’s the good people. The rest of the film is more or less an extended dialectic on the place of the firearm in postwar America that is sporadically interesting but bogged down by some seriously stagnant shit on cowardice and masculinity and, even more frustratingly, capped with a final sequence that's actually pretty brilliant. Oh, well. The whole thing's worth it for: “What the Hades is going on in this burg? Did some galoot make a uranium strike?”

</3
But I guess since we're friends on Goodreads I can't complain too much.

Great words on those two films, shame I haven't seen either but I'd love to hear your words on Master of the House. Glomdalsbruden comes highly recommended for more silent Dreyer.

After all this time my brain still misrepresents the title of your thread as "James and the Giant Movies," until I correct it. Subtly, of course.
