Flashing all the way forward to 2008...

More Camille, who happens to be the greatest. Ever. Especially when she mixes all sorts of Acapella stuff together. Like a funnier, more avant garde French atheist Kimbra-Regina mutant.

WARNING: The combination of the following two songs may lead to pure bliss.

First spin of Cherry Bomb, and this Deathcamp opener is like Lapdance revisited.

Surf plays like a long lost cousin of early 90's De La Soul, pretty perfect summer album. At the same time it feels like it's built to last. Time will tell, but gut impression is that 2015 has 2 rap classics in the making now.

Kinda wanna rep the Tenement record. A lot of junk on there but all in good faith--these guys seem generally interested in unusual musical ideas. "Dull Joy" stands out because the structure holds, but there are a lot of good hooks and tunes and sounds throughout. Attitude is early-Replacements, tunes remind me of Ted Leo.

I didn't care for it when I first heard it, but Aureate Gloom has turned out to be a new favorite. I've probably played it a dozen times already.

True Affection is so good I still haven't listened to the rest of that record, since there's pretty much no way it can match that quality.
Two of the best singles of the year so far are called Go, go figure. (Chemical Brothers and Public Service Broadcasting, for the record, the latter is from what could possibly be their best work yet.)
The Major Lazer is pretty great, and apparently there's two more coming before the end of 2016, guess Diplo is striking while the iron is hot. Heard he was a total dick to M.I.A., but hey, art vs. artist and all that. Lean On is a deserved super-hit despite the pointless orientalism of the video, while Be Together is an amazing opener. Side two is a bit weaker but at 32 mins, the whole thing is a breeze and leaves you wanting more.
Didn't listen to Django Django's debut when it came out, but been playing the new one a lot, and saw them live as well, where they absolutely killed. Like how none of the lyrics are about love or death or anything as complicated as that, just a childlike feel of chanting about light, moon, stars, reflections, etc. Maybe slightly overlong, that's pretty much the only issue. First Light is the highlight for me.
I've heard a lot more new stuff this year than pretty much ever, but I suddenly can't remember any of it. Maybe tomorrow...

Better than most films. Not a film. And not in the "This Is Not A Film" way, but, like, totally. Except how it is.

1) Wasn't Sremmlife out last year? Good record though.
2) Explain Barter 6, because I can dig Young Thug, but I thought that disc was awful.

SremmLife was out at the very beginning of this year.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around someone liking that (which has some good tunes but is overall a bit of a watered-down rip of the last few years of Atlanta rap) but not enjoying Barter 6. Likewise, someone liking Thugger in general but not Barter 6. It's the ultimate Thug album, it's more polished and songwriterly than most of his previous work but still packs every song with multiple flows and styles, not to mention jamming infectious melodies into every corner. I think it's some of the most exciting, engaging rap/pop music I've heard in a long while. The beats are great, and Thug is funny and fun and unpredictable. It's also the rare rap album that's really consistent front-to-back; there are a couple of subpar guest verses but even the lesser tunes are fun and there's very little fat to trim, which is something that can't be said about most other great rap albums. It's my #1 of the year and it's hard to imagine anything unseating it.

I guess what you found consistent, I found one dimensional, about a third through the disc I found myself getting bored, I had a similar issue with Black Portland - in the end, I like Young Thug in a single, but I can't really dig into an entire album.

Still I have a lot of catching up to do with this year especially with the rest of summer looking so dope (Bilal, Vince Staples, etc.). Here's some of my favs, kinda ranked.

Kendrick Lamar - TPaB
Curren$y - Pilot Talk III
Sleater Kinney - No Cities to Love
Drake - If You're Reading This It's Too Late
Joey Bada$$ - B4.DA.$$
Boosie Badazz - Touchdown 2 Cause Hell
Tree - Trap Genius
Jamie xx - In Colour
Open Mike Eagle - A Special Episode Of
Future x Zaytoven - Beast Mode
BBNG x Ghostface - Sour Soul

Surf was a total disappointment for me. There's some really inspired moments but I found so much of it just kind of boring :( :( :( (dat Quavo feature tho). Which was a shame because I was pretty excited for it. I don't dislike Young Thug but I couldn't even finish Barter 6.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of anything related to Animal Collective, but Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper has really captured my attention. I think I should go revisit a few albums now.

I've been listening to this quite a bit and what works so well about this is that like records such as Mobb Deep's The Infamous or Clipse's Hell Hath no Fury, it possess that quality and ability to just kind of grab you and plunge you into another perspective for the duration of the record. There's no real identifiable 'hits', even the tracks that seem mildly catered to it are buried under growling, clicking percussion and voices that are typically clear and pleasant (Jhene Aiko) are buried with snarling distortion and filtration. It's braggadocio is tinged with wariness, and all the lyricism feels pointed and pitiless - It's got a sinister energy that modern G rap tries for, but rarely really grasps at, it leaves a real impression.

I like songs off that Miguel record but don't like it as a whole.

Summertime 06 adds another notch to the argument that 2015 has been one of the best years for rap records in a good amount of time, I think.

Honestly, a lot of it's not new if you're familiar with the Chemical Brothers as a live group, but it's pretty great to have a new record from them, especially when they're in good form.
