13 Signs That Modern Movies Are Getting Worse (provide examples)

1. Failing artists keep getting big projects (Bryan Singer)
2. Most of the films that get mainstream wide release are sequels, prequels, remakes, reboots, etc.
3. Using CGI for everything (Superman's mustache removal in Justice League)
4. Movies which rely on adrenaline/dumb fun often gross the highest at the box office
5. Too many attempts at building franchises and/or cinematic universes (The Mummy)
6. It stars Kirk Cameron
7. Too much shakey cam/over-editing (Quandumb Of Solass)
8. A return to more studio-driven films as opposed to director/auteur ones (Disney, Marvel)
9. Regular people can now make a movie on their smartphone... and unfortunately they do :(
10. The complete abandonment of hand-drawn animation in the US
11. Batman doesn't dance anymore. (remember the Batusi?)
12. Disney (I think they will do more harm to vibrant, autonomous cinema than all the previous entries listed)
My heart is still and awaits its hour.

I'd like to contribute but am not sure what exactly the parameters are. By "thankless" do you mean blink-and-you'll-miss-them? Or a shittily written character? Or one that serves no particular purpose? Or any of the three?

I'm not sure either, but it seems like maybe a role that doesn't require much but it's somehow given to a fairly well-known actor/actress?

I think of a thankless role as a talking head, a character who introduces someone to someone else, a spouse/romantic partner who's just there to demonstrate another character's marital status and/or sexual orientation, etc. In other words, it's a role that's necessary to tell the story, but does not involve any emotional payoff for either the character or the audience. Am I right, Oxnard?

there are a lot of ways someone could define "thankless" so sure

13 thankless movie roles

1. Paul Henreid as Victor Laszlo in Casablanca
2. Linda Cardellini as Mrs. Hawkeye in Avengers: Age of Ultron
3. Ewen Bremner as Declan (the pilot) in The Rundown
4. Guy in the Predator suit (even Jean Claude gets more credit for this one. And he wasn't even in it)
5. Veronica Cartwright as Lambert in Alien

Am I right, Oxnard?
yeah that works. I also think of roles that are meant to be unsympathetic, roles that don't give the actors a lot of notes to play, roles that are meant to make another character look better by comparison, and so forth.

I was wondering if Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a thankless role given the response that character has received (and was probably intended to receive) although Fletcher did get a lot of awards for that one as well. not that it helped her career much going forward.
