House on Sorority Row is one of the better slashers I've found. Very excited to see one this good this late in the game.
I also thought it was much better than I would have expected.

Blood Quantum is a solid, low budget zombie flick about a Native American reservation going Mad Max in the wake of a zombie outbreak that...
Only affects whites
The characters are little more than composite rips from the Walking Dead. You have the gruff sheriff (Rick), the hot head that challenges him (Shane), the young trouble maker (Glenn) learning to be a man and take care of his pregnant wife (Maggie). There's even a guy who wields a samurai sword.

Also, there's a ton of weird little homages to Tarantino in place of what one would expect to be worshipping at the alter of Romero.

That said, the movie succeeds because it looks good, moves quickly and provides some of the most gratifying and creative zombie carnage I've seen without the 9 hours of wheel spinning that the Walking Dead would demand. It feels like a season of that show cut to almost only the enjoyable elements.

If the characters and dialogue were better, this would get a very solid recommendation. As is, I think the novelty of it's origins and it's dogged determination to hang with Hollywood studio zombie flicks makes it a sturdier film than something like Wyrmwood and worth checking out for zombie fans.

It's on Shudder.

I have never heard of this but I am intrigued. Also I appreciate that you put Dust Devil and not Hardware, correctly recognizing the superior Richard Stanley.

Regarding underseen '90s horror films, this is the point at which I cautiously recommend The Untold Story and Ebola Syndrome to the more hardened souls here, with the caveat that they're utterly repulsive and I take no responsibility for your reactions.
Ghostwatch was on Shudder and I watched it in October 2019 for my Horrorfest. I have not seen Hardware yet, but I will. Dust Devil rocks.

Never heard of your recs, but Rock I trust your opinion. Hey I've seen I Spit On Your Grave and Cannibal Holocaust. Sometimes you end up watching disgusting movies.

Ya'll are sleeping on Blood and Donuts.

It's got a refreshing take on vampire mythology.

It's got a supporting role played by David Cronenberg.

It's a quality vampire horror directed by a woman who isn't Kathryn Bigelow.

It's . . . Canadian.

90's horror worth checking out that I don't think have been mentioned:

Bride of Re-Animator
Def by Temptation
Frankenhooker
Two Evil Eyes
Cape Fear
Alien 3
Dracula
Maniac Cop 3
Body Bags
Carnosaur
Cronos
Return of the Living Dead 3
Castle Freak
Bad Moon
The Frighteners
I Know What You Did Last Summer
The Night Flier
Ringu
Urban Legend
Vampires
Audition
Deep Blue Sea
Sleepy Hollow
Stir of Echoes
Cool.

Bride of Re-Animator-Solid sequel to a classic. Seen thanks to Shudder
Def by Temptation-N/A
Frankenhooker-N/A
Two Evil Eyes-N/A
Cape Fear-Need to see the original first
Alien 3-Decent, ruined by the studio
Dracula-Last major Dracula flick I haven't seen
Maniac Cop 3-Gotta see the whole series
Body Bags-I liked it, the one with Mark is my favorite I think
Carnosaur-Need it!
Cronos-On my list!
Return of the Living Dead 3-Saw it on Shudder, I thought it was decent.
Castle Freak-Solid and nasty.
Bad Moon-Decent, the dog was the MVP.
The Frighteners-Love it, but it is a tad dated. Barely missed my list.
I Know What You Did Last Summer-Sucks.
The Night Flier-N/A.
Ringu-Need to see it...badly.
Urban Legend-I like it a lot. Good fun.
Vampires-I saw it on Tubi. Liked it quite a bit.
Audition-I'm not ready, but I have to see it.
Deep Blue Sea-This and Meg (2018) are both good shark movies. That's rare.
Sleepy Hollow-Love it, on my list I think.
Stir of Echoes-I should have gotten to this one by now.

I went to watch Blood and Donuts back in October and apparently I’d already seen it.

Where can I see House on Sorority Row and Blood Quantum?

HoSR is on iTunes and Amazon (but not Prime) for sure. Have to pay for it either way.

Vampires have to wait for October, though. Slashers can be Halfway To Halloween, but I don't think I'm ready for vampires in May.

It's a tad problematic but ultimately the film's purpose it to use it for a Twilight Zone-esque morality play about the treatment of the "other." Plus, we get a predominantly Native American film. Haven't seen one get this level of mainstream attention and availability since Smoke Signals.

Get Shudder, man. It's among the cheapest streaming services, consistently adds rarities that usually sell on Blu for 5x the monthly fee and really seems to put effort into appeasing their niche audience.

Seconded. It's $5 a month which is what it costs to rent one movie on Prime. So if I watch more than one movie on Shudder a month I feel like I'm in the black.

I think my top 20 would look something like this:

Army of Darkness
Audition
Candyman
Cast a Deadly Spell
Cemetery Man
Cronos
Cure
Dead/Alive
The Exorcist III
Gremlins 2: The New Batch
Habit
Jacob's Ladder
Perfect Blue
The Rapture
Scream
The Silence of the Lambs
The Sixth Sense
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight
Tremors
Wes Craven's New Nightmare

I could easily see new views Ravenous and Tales From the Hood and Whispering Corridors creeping up on this action. And I'm sure there's stuff I'm just plain forgetting.

I'm glad that you've been championing this film for years as I rarely hear anyone else talk of it, and it was unfairly dismissed in its own time. A very interesting and provocative motion picture.

I still don't quite see it as "horror", but I'd only quibble the point because it might set up unfair expectations. Unsettling? Sure. And very much worth watching.

Lucky McKee's latest, Kindred Spirits, is available on Tubi.
It's about a single mom and her oddball teenaged daughter, and what happens to them when the "Cool Aunt" comes to visit. Kinda pulpy and ultimately pretty silly I guess, but I really liked the three leads and their interactions struck me as genuine. Macon Blair is also good in a supporting role. McKee's last few haven't done much for me, so I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this one even if it's just empty calories.

And the most shocking part of this film was the very beginning when I learned that Thora Birch is playing mom roles now. When did I get this old?

Honestly, I'm not sure that it is, but I don't know how else to categorize it in a way that does justice to my reaction. I guess it's more about the conceptual implications of the film, the final 20 minutes, and what it means to me personally as a lapsed Catholic. I can't help but use words like "terror," "horror," "disturbing." And there are moments, like the woman singing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" or Rogers standing alone in that blue field, that are seared into my memory and immediately create a knot in my stomach. To me, the film is a nightmare, and one associated with some of my biggest anxieties over the course of my life.

But you could probably use that rationale to call Requiem for a Dream a horror film or something, so, you know. [big ol' shrug]

Nice! Agree with pretty much all of this. It's a trifle, but McKee almost can't help himself when it comes to directing actors well and creating effective character tension.

It's far better than they're giving it credit for. It opens with Hey Man Nice Shot and has Billy Zane give a Nicolas Cage-level insane performance. It should be mentioned alongside Citizen Kane.

I think my top 20 would look something like this:

Army of Darkness
Audition
Candyman
Cast a Deadly Spell
Cemetery Man
Cronos
Cure
Dead/Alive
The Exorcist III
Gremlins 2: The New Batch
Habit
Jacob's Ladder
Perfect Blue
The Rapture
Scream
The Silence of the Lambs
The Sixth Sense
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight
Tremors
Wes Craven's New Nightmare

I could easily see new views Ravenous and Tales From the Hood and Whispering Corridors creeping up on this action. And I'm sure there's stuff I'm just plain forgetting.
Never head of Deadly Spell, Rapture or Whispering Corridors. I think I forgot about Jacob's Ladder. Need to see Cure, Audition and Habit. The rest rock but if they were not on my list they missed the cut. Good list.

No response to my list even though I’m bored, Madman? For shame!!!

No wait you did. I’m just in a weird state of not sleeping well and wine.

I thought I missed your post. I missed Takoma1 responding to my list a page or two ago. I really need to get a tablet or a laptop again and stop using my phone haha.

Unless I did. I might have. Sheesh.

Nice! Agree with pretty much all of this. It's a trifle, but McKee almost can't help himself when it comes to directing actors well and creating effective character tension.
So the ol' search function shows me that we had a brief discussion about this in the past that I'd completely forgotten. (Hey, a LOT has happened since January).
But yeah, I'm prepared to put this in my top 3 McKees along with May and Sick Girl.

One quibble:
The interrogation and presumed conviction of the daughter seemed to be a perfect ending. Not that I was pleased at that fate for her, it's just that the film had set it all up so perfectly with the previous punches and threats and so on. It was infuriating but also inevitable. So to just skip to the aunt's interview and be like "Oh yeah, we figured out it was you" seemed tacked on (and poorly so). I wonder if test audiences hated the "daughter goes to jail" ending and forced a new one.
But other than that I thought it was pretty great. Your earlier review compared it to "90s trash" which is a perfect description and what I was trying to convey when I called it "pulpy". But mostly I loved the way the characters all blurred the lines between parent/sibling/friend. Good stuff.

So that's two of us that liked this film which means you all have to watch it now.

Have a wild notion to use the time to make a YouTube video defending '90s horror...

and realizing there's a lot of (supposedly) good '90s horror I haven't seen,
Been meaning to chime in here, didn't realize this post is already over a month ago.
Anyhow, I'd be very interested in such a video. Last October I gave myself an all-90s assignment, and boy was I bored by the time Halloween rolled around. As miserable as my all-80s October was the year before, I was rarely bored and I felt like the decade had some sort of identity. Didn't get that with the 90s. (And I liked a lot of the films, btw) So I'd be very interested to hear a solid case being made. Dug up my thoughts from last year's marathon:

Never seen before:
Candyman (Great)
Bad Moon (Pretty Good)
The Witches (Great)
The Ugly (recommended)
Dark Waters (Pleasant Surprise of the Month!)
Tales From the Darkside: The Movie (fun)
Graveyard Shift (not great)
Hocus Pocus (fun but empty)
Hardware (flawed but interesting)
The Reflecting Skin (not at all what I expected; I'll no doubt appreciate it even more on a rewatch)
Snow White: A Tale of Terror (wasn't into it, but I think I was in a bad mood that night)
Body Bags (fun)
The Dark Half (fine, but not great)

Rewatches:
Edward Scissorhands (love)
Sleepy Hollow (don't like as much as I used to)
Se7en (still great)
The Exorcist III (still great)
Ravenous (I have this memorized at this point; love it)
Arachnophobia (like it less than I did in '90)
The Silence of the Lambs (great film of course, but this viewing left me questioning if it's sweep-the-Oscars great)
Cronos (love)

So I spent last October acquainting myself with films I'd missed in the 80s, and although that is my least favorite decade for movies, I still had fun because I felt like I was learning stuff at the very least, or finally seeing classics I'd neglected. I think I watched over 40 movies if I'm not mistaken.
This year I gave myself an all-1990s theme. Although I'm not as clueless about the 90s as I was about the 80s, it's still a decade I don't gravitate towards often so I thought I'd have a similar experience this year but that wasn't the case. Saw some good movies, even some great ones, but my enthusiasm was low. (Possibly because the temperature rarely dipped below 85F down here?) So as you can see, I finished with a paltry 21 movies.

Also, it appears that no one has included Dark Waters (1993) on their lists, so I'll just throw that out there. Streaming on Prime and Shudder.

Hardware (1990) - C+ / B-

Looks great. I guess it's not nothing that Jek "Red 6" Porkins from Star Wars licks his lips and offers to drive up a woman's Hershey highway.

Is Demon Knight that good though? Is it?
Ya know, I ask myself that like every 3 or 4 years and then I watch it again and I'm like, "yeah, that's just so much better than it has any right to be".
