Citizen Kane is pretty overrated and dated anyway. It's very much the Gone With The Wind of movies.

Citizen Kane did nothing for film. Watch something by Uwe Boll instead.

I do that a lot. Been meaning to see Citizen Kane for, oh, 27, 28 years.
Have you seen any Welles films? I still haven't seen any Kurosawa film, so I'm not gonna give you a hard time. But yeah, Welles was pretty good in case you haven't heard. :P

I guess I should re watch GWTW again after many years and being in a sort of greatest hits era personally, but man 4 hours sounds long and I am not much of a Clark Gable fan.

Welles is rightly thought of as one of the greatest, as is Citizen Kane, even though it is not my favourite movie of all time, nor even my favorite Welles (probably)

Oh man you've got so many treats for you in store. Seven Samurai is 3.5 hours, black-and-white, subtitled, and from the 1950s, and still somehow more watchable than 99% of Hollywood blockbusters. Rashomon, Ikiru, High and Low, Ran - all masterpieces as well.

An unpolished gem. A not entirely formed attempt at an American Giallo. It's not a film I could give an unqualfied recommendation to, but one that should be watched by those who want to start digging a little past the obvious 70's horror touchstones.
Just finished and this would be my opinion. Solid, not great, although I feel like I could gain more from it by watching again. Side note: I indulged and purchased a few more things last night that are of the such.

Haven't seen:
Sisters
Zombie 2
Deep Red

It's been a while:
Suspiria
Don't Look Now

It's been recently but I liked you enough to buy when I probably shouldn't at the moment:

Citizen Kane is a coffee table book disguised as a film. It's lovely to look at, but you don't feel its heart or soul.

The Stranger is on Netflix, and I'll be darned to say that most of its decisions worked out in its favor. What's left is a lean, mean thriller about a just married man and the cop who is there for a reason that gets revealed midway through.

Gone with the Wind is most certainly not woke (although it did have things to say about feminism that is revolutionary in 1939). But that sequence in Atlanta is worth the price of admission by itself. Throw in some nifty costumes and some memorable sequences (the scene at Tara during Scarlett's low point) and it holds up well.

If Citizen Kane doesn't have a heart and soul, then it has more mind and imagination than reasonable to make up for it.

Citizen Kane is a film long obsession over trying to discover who a man is. Any of the cinematic 'parlour tricks' Welles uses are in service of depicting the soul of Kane.

Just because he is an inscrutable and complex character doesn't mean what we see is not the heart of this character. It is a deeply emotional film, even if we aren't always meant to empathize with him.

Excusing my very clever pun above, Citizen Kane is amazing, and I think it has a lot of heart and soul, they just slowly reveal themselves.

If you can't feel a shiver in your soul as the lonely hollow echos of portentous indolence in Kane's futile mutterance..."jigsaw puzzles?", then I just don't know what else to do with you.

Scream Blacula Scream is better than the first and among my favorite blaxsploitation flicks. Pam Grier and voodoo to fight him rather than a cross? Hell yeah.

Also, Terrified was a thoroughly solid spooky ghost/demon flick. Gets a little thin and messy at the end but a lot of very groovy stuff.

Comparing Return with 28 Days is obviously comparing apples and oranges. Entirely different approaches, 28 Days grim realism vs the campy grotesques of Return. They both have their benefits, but Return is my pure pleasure principal. Nothing can really compete with it.

And I would probably put Day of the Dead above 28 Days.

I might give it third place.

Rec is good, but I don't spend much time dwelling over any of it particularly.

I was just doing a goof, please don't turn this into a thing, the "zombies" of the Later franchise are fundamentally zombies in their intent and effect, as the brutish brain-dead horde at the gates of a horror conceit, and it's not worth the conversation, I was just doing a goof, please God.

You are correct, sir!

As for Fulci's, I'm not a huge fan of the film but those are some of the best LOOKING zombies ever. WAY better than Romero's gray-face-paint approach in the 80s. Put Fulci's zombies in a better movie, and that would probably be my #1.

Technically, they aren't zombies since their creation didn't involve them reanimating after dieing, but since the film is so great, I don't care!

It's also my number one pick.

Also, you all should watch The Night Eats the World. It's not one of the best zombie films, but it's pretty good and a breath of fresh air for the sub genre if you want something unique.
