Donner's Start Trek Thread - Cached pages here.

Post by Epitoooozy » Sun Dec 24, 2017 6:17 pm

As I mentioned before in another thread, I have been able to retrieve about 45% of the pages from "Donner discusses and reviews every single STAR TREK" thread, which was one of the most long-lasting and popular threads in GD. For me, it was always an enjoyment reading his synopses and comments after I would see a particular episode. I am now watching Season 4 of DS9 and when the RT forums shut down last month, I was deeply saddened that I would no longer be able to read those great reviews.

But after watching The Visitor last week, I was amazed that the page containing that episode (Page 77) miraculously turned up in the cache as well as a few other pages. By digging deeper, and adding key words (such as specifically typing "Deep Space 9", i was able to find even more. Eventually, by manually typing each page number, I was able to recover 70 of the 151 Pages.

Here then are the cached pages that I found in Google, broken down by Series, starting with T.O.S. I hope you enjoy them. But I would save them as soon as possible. For I have a feeling it won't stay cached forever.

Edit: 12/28/2017. Five more pages found through Bing: 68, 100, 121, 149, 151

Thanks, Stu. I just hope Donner sees this. Does anyone know if he's a member here? There doesn't seem a member directory.

In addition, if you type the URL below for Page 116 into the Google search bar, a small paragraph shows up in the cache, but it doesn't have the upside down greentriangle like all the other cached pages so it appears to be lost. This is most unfortunate because this Page contains the last 6 episodes of DS9.

There is, and he is; he's only posted in The Baker's Dozen thread so far, but he is indeed here.

Would you happen to know the exact thread title and the approx. date you posted it? Nothing is coming up so far in the Google cache because "Madman" is also the name or part of a name of several movies.

Edit: Is this it?

Could you maybe find my old RT MST3K review thread as well? My username at the time was Stu, I started it in 2010, and the name of it was "Stu (tries to) review every episode of MST3K", I believe.

Stu,

These were the only cached page I could find, Page 1 and 4. That's too bad, because it looks like it was originally 18 pages, and you would think that with the moderate success I had with Donner's thread that at least 5 or 6 pages would turn up. I don't know if more were once cached and they have since disappeared or they were just never cached in the first place. (For example, Page 12 and 16 were also was supposed to be cached, but when I clicked on the green triangle, it just went to a dead link.)

Page 4.

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... clnk&gl=us

Page 18

Here is the search page that shows several other cached pages, but they either don't have the upside down triangle, or if they do, it just goes to a dead link. But who knows, maybe if you have a different browser, they may work for you.

https://www.google.com/search?q=forum.r ... 40&bih=794

Anyway, at least a couple are out there, but I would save the pages as soon as possible; they could it could disappear at any time.

Well, it looked like a good thread. I'm sorry I missed it at the time but I didn't post much in GD during that era. In reading Page 1, I see there is a reference to The Pod People. I remember seeing that about five years ago with my kids who were 14 and 12 at the time. It was one of our favorite episodes.

It was kind of cool that my kids were into the show so much, even though they were to young to understand a lot of the "in-joke" references to some of those awful films. Other episodes we saw were Teenagers From Outer Space, Phantom Planet, Manos - Hands of Fate and Attack of the Giant Leeches, as well as some of their shorts.

Thanks, other Epi. And I hate to say that I actually didn't laugh at the Pod People episode very much at the time, but that's sometimes how I feel about certain Joel-era episodes (I grew up watching the Sci-Fi Channel era of the show, so I prefer the Mike era), but, I did only watch it once, and it's been a long time since I saw it, so maybe I'm overdue for a revisiting. And out of the rest of the bunch you mentioned, Phantom Planet has to be my favorite of those; the movie's nothing special in providing entertainment just on its own (it's certainly no Space Mutiny, for example), but M&TBs did a great job of riffing it nonetheless: "Remember these people? They're in our movie!".

Stu,

Page 18 just popped up. I posted the link above. I could have sworn it wasn't cached yesterday, but when I clicked on the index page a few minutes ago, it now showed the upside down green cache arrow for Page 18. So now we have three pages. It doesn't have any of your actual posts, but a couple of other posters quoted a couple of your reviews.

It may be worthwhile to click on that index page every once in a while. Who knows, maybe more will turn up.

Edit: It also may be worthwhile to look at Bing and other search engine sites other than Google. I wasn't able to turn up any more of your MST3K pages, but I did find five more of Donner's Start Trek pages and added them above. I now have 75 of the 151 pages of that thread cached .

Thanks again, man. And I don't think I noticed MadMan's final post in it when he put it in back in June; in response to that, I have to say thank you, and that I wished I had gotten all the way through the entirety of MST3K, but I just got tired of reviewing the show episode-by-episode, and I was fairly content with making it a good 2 & 1/2 seasons in, so it seemed like a good time to quit while I was ahead, y'know?

Ah, don't feel too bad, Stu. After all your thread states "Smalley (tries to) review every MST3K.." and that's exactly what you did.

Yippie! I found the very first page :D

https://web.archive.org/web/20150216004 ... how/819118

It was on archive.org of all places. I didn't think they archived beyond the RT Forum index page, but they did for Page 1 at least. And it actually shows the Tribbles as ratings.

And it looks like Page 2 and 3 are archived too. Just click on the actual Page #s in the archived page. Can't seem to get beyond Page 3 though.

I can't believe what an incredible find this is...hiding in plain sight all along.

It looks like it was archived in April, 2015. much earlier than the Google cache. Not only do the Tribbles show up, but older AVs may have as well..

So far, I have been able to find cached and archived pages for 78 of the 151 pages. Who knows, maybe we will get them all back.

Check out the link posted below for more possible archived pages. That is how the archive.org for Page 1 turned up. You may be able to find other lost pages yourself for not only Star Trek but other threads as well. If you find Star Trek pages that I haven't already posted, please post them here or PM me the link and I will add them to my pages.

http://timetravel.mementoweb.org/

Edit: Just found the first 9 Pages on Archive.org. Equivalent to Page 1-13 of Google cache. So we have de facto the first 13 pages cached.

I am speechless. I'd archived the classic reviews, animated series reviews, and movie reviews at my website, but never got to TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise under the stupid idea that RT would be there forever. I've also started reviewing Discovery at my website too, so the tradition is continuing.

Thank you so much for bringing this back from the dead.

You are welcome, Donner, but I hope you had chance to copy the cached pages, because almost all of them have already disappeared and now only lead to dead links. The "old format" archive.org pages are safe, but the not the Google pages. (Cached pages only last about four months before they disappear, or, more accurately, "updated." And since the original RT forums and the threads therein are gone, so have the cached links when Google captures the latest - now dead - links.

I was afraid this was going to happen, so luckily I saved each of the above-posted pages. But even here, as I have just learned, because the caches are gone, only the text and a few pics and AVS remain. (The familiar RT forums layout in the post-downgrade period after 2014 has disappeared.) So if you didn't have chance to migrate your reviews to your other site, then I can try and get them to you. Also, I just found a bunch of new archive.org threads, that cover a good part of TNS and some DS9 so I will be updating those pages accordingly.
