Spooky Cartoon Thread: Re-animated

For those of you just tuning in:
There used to be this website called www.rottentomatoes.com, and I once started a thread there in which I compiled, with the help of others, about 20 pages' worth of horror- or halloween-themed cartoons. This thread was unceremoniously deleted in the Great Purge, and although I spent about 2 years updating it, I didn't bother to keep a log of all of the titles because that's what the rackin' frackin' thread was for!! So let's try this one more time!

Commentary:
Truth be told, these take a big dip in quality after those first two Fleischer shorts, but in the interest of completeness I'm including everything I know of.
Also--- The Sea Hag character appears in many shorts, but I haven't found many that I would describe as "spooky", in terms of creepy background designs or color schemes, so I haven't included them. Myskery Melody above is the only one I've found that suits the purpose of this thread. If anyone is aware of any others, please pass it along.

Not really "spooky", but maybe appropriate for the September weekend instead.

If I am the Phantom, it is because man's hatred has made me so. If I shall be saved, it will be because your love redeems me.

Awesome, dude. Just awesome.
I had this knee-jerk temptation to add some that I love, but this is so great I don't wanna interfere in any way. I'll just look forward to more.

Thanks buddy. This thread exists purely for my own enjoyment so if anyone else looks at it that's a bonus.
There's no way I'm gonna remember everything we posted in the first thread so don't be shy about submissions, even if you just want to PM me some titles to look for.

And thanks to JJ DP and Pops for the adds. I hadn't seen the Hedgehog before, nice one.

I LOOOOOOOVE Hedgehog in the Fog.

I don't think of it as spooky so much as "atmospheric," but it certainly leaves me in a certain kind of mood.

"How is she, there . . . . in the fog?"

I used to use this short to teach mood and tone to my students.

I also recommend Norstein's Take of Tales aka The Little Gray Wolf Will Come if you haven't seen it yet. I revisited it recently, and it's quite superb.

Also, just out of curiosity, what do you teach?

I'm a 5th grade teacher. I used to teach 4th grade, which had a bigger emphasis on tone/mood in text.

commentary:
The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo was an odd series in which various literary characters (Robin Hood, King Arthur, etc) were played, relatively straight, by the Magoo character. These are not comedies and his trademark nearsightedness is abandoned, which leads me to wonder why they just didn't do the stories without the Magoo character at all. Weird.

The other two stories included here are from the Mister Magoo series. Apologies for the terrible Asian character.
Two episodes I could not locate anywhere: "Night Fright" and "Boo, Magoo".

It's been a challenge finding a decent print of Cobweb Hotel but I'm still looking. Even my DVD copy is cruddy. And yeah, Skeleton Frolic is just frickin' gorgeous. Had to restrain myself from posting more stills of that one.

I have said this about every fall the past few years, but y'all should really watch Over The Garden Wall. It is an animated miniseries, but it takes you less than 2 hours to finish the entire thing. It's an ideal primer for the Halloween season. There are very few things I rewatched more in the past 3 years. It's funny, creepy, moving and it has nice, catchy songs (but only sparsely).

Yep, I was just about to suggest Garden Wall to Thief, in fact. It's probably aimed at an older crowd than your boys, but it's delightful. Watched it with my friend's young son a couple of years ago and loved it so much I bought my own copy within the month.
And yes, Super Monsters counts. I mean, don't ask me to watch it or anything, but yeah... :P

I will add to the chorus of praise for this series. It is really good and straddles that line between scary and weird in a pretty amazing way.

personal anecdote:
One of Lil' Terror's favorite toys was this movie viewer. Don't remember how many cartridges I had, but I do know that one of them was Lonesome Ghosts. You watched the movie by turning the crank on the side. Turn it slowly and you could watch it in slow motion, or frame by frame. Turn it in reverse and the film moved backwards. In retrospect I'm convinced that this played a role in my understanding of, and future fascination with, cel animation.

The Haunted House and The Mad Doctor are, in my opinion, two of the best examples of American animation. I absolutely cannot get enough of those two.

Yeah, I was definitely not a Disney kid growing up. In fact, as far as I know I'd never seen Trick or Treat until I found it for the first version of this thread. But as an adult I've come to realize that they were really firing on all cylinders during the 30s/40s. That's hardly news to anybody, it's just that I hadn't been paying attention for most of my life. In terms of artwork and animation their shorts from that era look every bit as great as their features.
As a matter of personal preference I'll always favor the Warner Bros humor and the Fleischers' weirdness, but it's not hard to see why Disney was #1.

EDIT: What I should've said is that, with the exception of my Lonesome Ghosts viewer, I hadn't seen any of these Disney shorts until recently. I saw all the movies like every American kid, but the shorts were something I didn't watch often. And I'm not even sure I had access to them, come to think of it.

And yes, Super Monsters counts. I mean, don't ask me to watch it or anything, but yeah... :P
Well, I'm glad it does, cause I have a few nits to pick with the writers! I mean, Zoe is a "zombie", but can see and walk through things? Where does that come from?
