A Corrierino Awareness Thread
A Corrierino Awareness Thread
Alright, so I have never made a thread on this forum before, (Besides the Morphoseth one) and I thought I would give it a shot.
So the goal here is to talk about the civil and social issues that affect our world. To me, this covers many bases. Gay rights, racism, hate crimes, world hunger, certain ignorance based Arizona laws, racial cleansing... Any of those and many many more count.
If you see a news story while surfing the net that's relevant at all, post a link in here. The goal is to raise awareness, or at least provide enlightening reading material to soothe our bored minds.
Debate is welcome, just please be civil and non-trollish.
I will post something in a little bit.

Because gay rights is my specialty, might as well start out in my signature style:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/e60/news ... id=5177704
Not much to say about it, except how horrendous it is. And to think that's it's practically socially acceptable there, even encouraged is very depressing. I just wish it was surprising

That link was depressing, but, like you said, not surprising.
One off-topic comment: are those E:60 pieces always so...artsy? I've definitely seen some Jeremy Schaap stories in the past, and this one definitely seemed the most artistically driven. I know it's not important, but I couldn't help but notice it. The camera placement, saturation/de-saturation of color, the quick edits, etc.

I used to watch the channel when I was a kid, though, and I saw plenty of artsy segments during some of the shows. I always found them well made.

I'm also straight and very adamantly for gay rights, so... hifive, I suppose. It severely irks me when people call something "gay" as an insult. I used to employ snarky replies upon hearing such insults, but no one ever followed and it became that much more of a bother.
The two main issues that may come up in this thread that I'm attuned to, though, are the death penalty and racism. The way Tookie went down still frustrates me.

The death penalty pisses me off more than any other issue. It's the only topic in which I can rise above apathy and get genuinely angry.
I have no idea why that is.

Re: A Corrierino Awareness Thread
Okay, one more for the night. And, surprise, a gay issue:
http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/05/11/ryan- ... k-boycott/
As an aspiring journalist, I am all for freedom of speech, and especially supportive of publications not censoring their columnists. However, I wonder what the author of such an article was thinking. A gay or lesbian can't play a straight person? REALLY? He does know what 'acting' means, right?
And it's particularly strange that the author of such a narrow minded article is gay himself. I will admit, it makes me wonder what kind of psychology is going on in the man's head.
Not really a huge issue on a grand scale, but I just needed to vent a little.

I generally don't believe in the death penalty, though I don't necessarily object to it in the case of war crimes.
Everything around me is evaporating. My whole life, my memories, my imagination and its contents, my personality - it's all evaporating. One of the only issues I have an unclear moral stance on is that of animal testing. I don't believe that animals should be used as test tubes for our problems but as someone who benefits daily from the knowledge that has been gathered in this manner, I have a tough time taking a firm stance against it.
Other issues like abortion, gay rights, euthanasia and the death penalty provide clearer insights but this one is tough.

Re: A Corrierino Awareness Thread
Why should a person who willfully takes another person's life be allowed to get away with punishment any less severe than what they've inflicted? In fact, I think murderers should be killed in the same way that they killed their victims. If the victim got 15 stab wounds before they died, then the murderer should be stabbed 15 times and left to bleed out. If the victim was raped and brutally beaten and left to die, then that's what should happen to the murderer too. And so on.

I just tend to sympathise more with the victim and families than the criminal. I know if someone close to me was killed, I'd want the murderer to suffer extensively.

Right but that would lower you to the level of a murderer. If you think it's so wrong to commit a murder, why commit one yourself? Sure, I'd probably want vengeance if someone killed somebody close to me, but that doesn't make it right.Alex J. Murphy wrote:

There is no right when it comes to a criminal. A criminal has forfeited any sort of sympathy or consideration that is granted to a standard human being. Why should I have any consideration for them when they obviously had no consideration for others? Screw being better than them, I want them to feel the pain, I want them to know what it feels like to be on the other side.Armin wrote: Right but that would lower you to the level of a murderer. Mind you, I'm talking about the perpetrators of heinous crimes, like rapists and child molesters and murderers. I'm not saying a weed dealer deserves to be buttfucked, shivved, and left to die in a gutter. But some people should get as good as they give, because that's all they deserve.
