I think I once made a thread and it immediately imploded upon itself.

Is that image of Dorian all mangled from the remake? The cover looks so hokey...
Image
...but that image looks pretty decent, actually.

I've never bothered with either Dorian Gray... although I just added the original to my queue... the remake is actually available to watch instantly. I might have to give them a go.

I believe the mangled Dorian painting is from the remake. The one in the original looks even more hideous when you see it in color at the end.

I watched the remake on Netflix streaming, but the local library has it. I'll use that to pull stills. In fact, I was considering going to get it when I found your post!

There used to be a DVD of the '45 version at the library but it isn't coming up on searches today. maybe it was not returned by someone who borrowed it.

There are several other versions of the story, some of which are available to stream on Flix. One is called by two titles: either Dorian, or Pact with the Devil. It's really out there in terms of adaptations from the original story.

EDIT: I went and picked up the 2009 DVD, and the librarian at that branch kept searching for the 1945 movie. She found it at the Main library, so it will be on hold for me Monday or Tuesday!. I left it in my Flix cue, though. :D

A Comparison of The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945) & Dorian Gray (2009)

The soundtrack for the 1945 film is credited to Herbert Stothart. He is best known for composing the background music used in The Wizard of Oz. He also scored the 1936 film of Romeo and Juliet. He has 108 title to his credit at IMDb, so he must have been busy. The Dorian Gray music is sweet strings and little percussion. The lower strings and brass carry the lines for moments of dire import. It's rather like any other mid-40's score.

The 2009 soundtrack emanated from the mind of Charlie Mole. I had never heard of Mole by name, but I have heard his score for the "Midsummer Night's Dream" episode of ShakespeaRetold. Mole uses various musical motifs, but his score overall is little more memorable than the '45 score. While you are listening the music certainly carries some weight, but not much of it sticks to the brain. The score is certainly more dread-filled than the score from the 1945 film, but that has more to do with modern soundtrack styles, I think. The end title theme is the most memorable from the film. It seems a bit reminiscent of a theme I used to hear on "Dark Shadows." You can listen to it below.

Image The Soundtrack Recordings
No soundtrack is available for either film. It doesn't surprise me that there would be no available recording of the music from the 1945 film, but the 2009 movie? Unbelievable. There has never been a soundtrack album release of the Charlie Mole score. I couldn't even find mp3s available to download, and no CD has been issued as of this post.

Image There are some cuts posted to YouTube, although several posts are versions of the same track, which people are calling "Extravaganza." I didn't embed but one of them. The rest you can access via links.

"Extravaganza" track with fairly good quality audio in stereo. The level may be a little hot, and distorted ever so slightly. Embedded below. I don't know where this title came from, because in the end credits only four compositions are listed, none by Mole.

Music from the soundtrack for the 2009 film. This is mono.

"Sadness Waltz" uploaded to YouTube from the Charlie Mole 2009 score.

Another post of "Extravaganza" from the Charlie Mole score for the 2009 film.

The end credits from the 2009 film with the music by Charlie Mole.

Well, the images I've seen from it give me the impression that it's some sort of modernization (not in the sense of it being set in the present) of the old story, sort of a product created for the movie goer that doesn't like to think much. Or something like that.

Maybe I should watch the trailer. It must lend a different impression from the film. I've never seen the trailer.

Well, when I watch the trailer I am unable to divorce it from where each scene comes in the overall film. :(

A Comparison of The Maltese Falcon (1931), Satan Met a Lady (1936) & The Maltese Falcon (1941)

There was a 3-disc release available from Amazon that had all three of these films together (dreiser owns it) and you can still get it, but it has also been split into two boxes. This box contains the earlier attempts, fulfilled by a 3rd party seller:
Buy it through Amazon. This is The Maltese Falcon (1931) and Satan Met a Lady (1936). There are no extras, as I recall.

The 1941 edition has been released with extra features (this is disc one from the 3-disc set, separately packaged):
Available from Amazon.com.

You might also get the 2010 barebones release DVD of the 1941 Huston version of the film Image
which can be purchased from BestBuy.com. This edition is also available from Amazon.

A Comparison of
The Maltese Falcon (1931), Satan Met a Lady (1936) & The Maltese Falcon (1941)

Image

Please remember that Humphrey Bogart was not yet a huge star when he signed on to replace George Raft as Sam Spade in this film. Raft perhaps got cold feet because actor/writer-turned-writer/director John Huston had never helmed a film, and Raft didn't want his career to be messed up. Bogart had made a few films, but was apparently by no means a major box-office draw at the time. According to IMDb, Huston had acted in only three films prior to directing The Maltese Falcon. So there was some reason why this pairing clicked: John Huston and Humphrey Bogart.

If you watch one of the documentaries based on Bogart's career, it is likely to be established that he didn't have a settled screen persona before The Maltese Falcon, and that he was a bit type-cast afterward. Ricardo Cortez, who was the first to play Sam Spade on the silver screen was fleshing out that role in his 45th screen appearance. Bogart, on the other hand, also had 44 screen appearances before he tackled the role.

In retrospect it seems a given that the film would have made huge stars of both Bogart and Huston, but that wasn't as certain as we might think. I don't have any indication from my reading that Huston believed he could do a better job at directing this film than Roy Del Ruth and William Dieterle had done. Perhaps he wanted only to add his flair, to make the film appear on the screen that flickered in his imagination as he read the novel.

As for Bogart, he had ups and downs before 1941.
HubPages website wrote:Two films in 1941 changed everything for Bogart. High Sierra was a surprise hit, it did very well at the box office and critics loved the movie and proved Bogart could carry a film. Later that year The Maltese Falcon was released to even bigger box office and an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. After the success of those two films, Bogart found himself in better movies.
So, was it the success of the Hammett story that made Bogie a star, or did it merely parlay what had begun with the Sierra film into a more permanent situation? We'll never know, because that's the way it happened. It didn't happen any other way. In reality, Bogart didn't get a painted lead bird; instead he got the jewel-encrusted golden bird in real life. And it changed his life forever after that.

If you'd like me to complete and post a certain one, please suggest it here in the thread. (Or PM me.)

When an essay is complete and posted you'll see a link for the image, and the opening words of the essay beneath the image. Just so you know. :D

A Comparison of
The Maltese Falcon (1931), Satan Met a Lady (1936) & The Maltese Falcon (1941)

Image

The first thing to determine is whether any of these three is actually a terrible, horrible, heinous film. Some people cannot bring themselves to watch anything besides the 1941 version, as if their eyeballs will wither should the images of the earlier versions strike their retinas. When I first discovered that the earlier films exist, I was astonished, curious, and had no expectation that either of them would be watchable. But I was fascinated by the progression. Remember that I was newly a member of a movie forum where I read a constant flow of tirades about "aww, this sequel will suck!" and "God, they can't remake this film. They will ruin it!" This was the generally accepted norm for sequels and remakes. They always suck, because the originals are always better.

Yet, in the case of a film I had already seen half a dozen times, and found to be excellent, it was the remake. No, wait, it was the remake to a remake. My mind boggled. Yep, boggled. In fact, if no other situation had taught me the meaning of a boggled mind, this one did for sure.

I suppose Satan Met a Lady has to be the worst adaptation, since it doesn't retain the character names, and toys more with the plot than either eponymous adaptation does. Or does it? If you read the novel and then immediately watch Lady, you'll be able to tell what was changed and what was left intact. There is more plot left intact than it might seem. Okay, but it changes the names, the McGuffin is not a bird, and it is a comedy. That makes it the least faithful, and I'd be willing to say that it is, therefore, the worst adaptation.

In the first adaptation, the 1931 film, Sam Spade is more like the character in the novel, except that his tendency to womanize is exaggerated from the written character. I guess sex sold even in 1931. A lot of the sexy stuff was sublimated in Huston's script to allow for more of the action scenes. Not that they are action scenes by today's standards, but if you read the novel and then watch Huston's film you can see that he kept a lot of the scenes from the book, often using the same dialogue. But the 1931 initial adaptation mostly used material from the book, as well. The two screenwriters chose to emphasize different sections of the book; although it's interesting how much they both retained. Overall, Huston's adaptation seems to be truer to the book. All three of the adaptations change the ending. I suppose that, in a way, the wrap-up to the middle film is the closest to the book. The 1931 script adds a coda in a women's jail. The 1941 version omits the ending scene of the novel.

But the plain truth is that, no matter how unfaithful each may be as an adaptation, none of the movies is terrible as a film. Now, if you want seriousness, and you want the character names to be the same and all that, then the middle adaptation is going to disappoint. But as a film student's study, the three films seen in release order function as an excellent course. And as entertainment, none of them fails, either. But to watch the first two movies without prejudice may be an impossible task for some viewers. To see them won't tarnish your opinion of John Huston's incredible work at all. But it might allow you to see that he undoubtedly used both movies, as well as the novel, for sources of ideas.

A Comparison of
The Maltese Falcon (1931), Satan Met a Lady (1936) & The Maltese Falcon (1941)

Dashiell Hammet as a writer surprised me. Especially since one of the web pages I ran across when I first began researching The Maltese Falcon films had the bald-faced assertion, "Hammett was not a very good writer." I can't find that page now, and I didn't bookmark it...perhaps the Hammett police removed the statement. But as it turns out, that isn't true.

He won't rival Willy Shakespeare for prominence any time soon, but his writing is arresting if not purely-formed. I eased into Hammett's works by reading the work that is most pertinent to this Remake Rematch. I read it twice. But the only copy my local library had available when I set out to do this Rematch is a volume that contains all five of his novels. So, needing eye-fodder for meal times, I continued with the other four novels in the book. After Falcon I read The Thin Man, then Red Harvest, The Dain Curse, and ended up with The Glass Key.

One Saturday morning after walking up to the library and thinking that I had to wait an hour for the bank to open, needing to kill time, I checked out a volume of 24 Hammett short stories, which I worked through. He was not a bad writer at all. He has a tendency to get very convoluted in terms of his plots (witness The Maltese Falcon) but this is not always bad. I marvel at how much forethought must have gone into the plots of some of his tales. A couple of them seem to me to be precursors of Falcon ("The Whosis Kid" and "The Gutting of Couffignal" both from 1925, have similar plot developments to the 1930 novel). Some of the character of Sam Spade is evident in the traits of Alec Rush in the story "The Assistant Murderer," a 1926 opus. After reading the five novels and 24 of his short works, I have an appreciation for Hammett's crime fiction and how it led to both The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man. Among the novels I'd select Falcon as his best.

In The Maltese Falcon there are a number of bleeding corpses, but nowhere the number you'll stumble over in the dark while reading Red Harvest. Some of his short stories have fist-fights and shootouts that result in a number of dead bodies tossed about in awkward poses throughout their length. And his short stories are often novellas, I discovered. "The Big Knockover" rages forward for 54 pages in the volume I borrowed from the library. But it is worth all the page turning when you reach the end.

Crime fiction isn't my favorite genre either in films or in print. But I'm glad I more or less took a wrong turn and wound up reading all this. Left entirely to my own devices, without the potential intervention of serendipity, I'd have read The Maltese Falcon and would have stopped there. The mere convenience of the other writings is all that propelled me into reading them. It has been a pleasurable journey, but not one that is sufficient to make me a Hammett Completist, either in terms of prose or film scripts and their celluloid outcomes. But if I run across someone in a forum or in real life who wants to discuss Hammett's works and even a bit of his personal history, I can now possibly hold my own.

As for how successful and prolific Hammett was in the art that seems to be all our favorite, check IMDb. Hammett is credited with a lot of television writing, but most of it seems to be characters that he created being snapped up by other screenwriters. There is even a biographical film called Hammett (which I have not seen) that threatens to be based on the man's life. And I found a link to a documentary biography about Hammett: here, a part of the PBS series American Masters, first broadcast in 1983.

The disc with the original 1951 movie has no extras. I have that set, so I can attest that the 1951 film is beautiful in Blu-ray.
Read about the 1951 Special Edition Blu-ray at bluray.com.
Purchase the Blu-ray from Barnes&Noble.com.

The 2008 production has been released on Blu-ray. You can read a review of the disc at bluray.com.
The 2008 Blu-ray page at bluray.com
You can order it from Amazon.com. This is the 3-disc version that also contains the 1951 film and a digital copy. It seems the producers expected that no one would want a Blu-ray disc of only the 2008 remake. Ha ha!
Purchase the Blu-ray from Barnes&Noble.com.

Well, I have all the DVD and Blu-ray links up for all the film, now, if I kept correct notes.

Now I'm off to finish my laundry, and to grab several hundred frames from each of the Dorian Gray films. :)

Hmm. Not much of a post.

I got the 1945 Dorian Gray film sampled last week, but I couldn't get to the 2009 film to make frame grabs until this morning. I have them all done, though, and now I can build essay broker graphics for all the films while I continue to work on essays. And I've revamped the signature to show which rematch has recent material. Gotta keep the promotional machine working, y'know. :D
